★ Repulse Bay(浅水湾)The beach here is one of Hong Kong's most picturesque(独特的). Golden sand lines the bay to the traditional Chinese-style Life Guard Club(香港拯溺总会). There are shower and changing facilities and lifeguards on duty from April to October. Formerly the old colonial Repulse Bay Hotel, the lovely, rebuilt Repulse Bay Arcade(有拱廊的街道)houses, shops and restaurants.     

Application of Artificial Neural Network in the Research of the Bohai Bay Eutrophication

In order to research the feasibility of artificial neural network (ANN) in the research of eutrophication of the Bohai Bay in China, an ANN model simulating chlorophyll a, b and c concentrations, concerning temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, pH value, chemical oxygen demand (COD), PO43-, NO2-and NO3-factors in the Bohai Bay was presented and validated. After experiencing and training by Matlab, the model′s validation mean square error (MSE) performance is 0.009 985 02. R-squared between estimated and observed concentrations of chlorophyll a, b and c are 0.965 7, 0.998 7 and 0.970 7 respectively, indicating that the estimated value agrees with the observed value well, and the model can be used in the prediction of eutrophication of the Bohai Sea. In order to study the influence of model input factors on chlorophyll concentration (i.e. model outputs), hypothetical scenarios were introduced to show model output responses to variations in input factors. The limitation of temperature, salinity and phosphate that induce red tide in the Bohai Bay was also presented.     

Numerical Model of Storm Surge and Inundation in Bohai Bay

A two-dimensional numerical model of extratropical storm surge and inundation in Bohai Bay was built based on the unsteady flow Navier-Stokes equations. The model included two sections, one was for the simulation of storm surge tidal level and the other for the simulation of storm surge inundation in the coastal area. While simulating the storm surge tidal level, the alternating direction implicit (ADI) method was applied to dispersing and solving 2D storm surge equations. In the simulation of storm surge inundation, the 2D unsteady flow equations were dispersed and solved using the structureless grids of finite volume method (FVM). A coupling calculation mode of the process of inundation and storm surge tidal level variation was proposed, therefore the storm surge inundation process and area could be calculated while simulating and forecasting the process of storm surge tidal setup. Furthermore, an extratropical storm surge and inundation in Bohai Bay were simulated using this numerical model. Simulation results are in good agreement with the measured data, which shows that this numerical model provides a new method of simulating and forecasting storm surge and inundation in Bohai Bay.     

Statistical Analysis and Prediction of the Concentration of Harmful Algae in Bohai Bay

Based on the data of phytoplankton concentration and environmental factors in Bohai Bay from May to September in 2003. the relationship between environmental factors and phytoplankton biomass was analyzed. By analysis of variance, the weather condition was found to have no direct relation with phytoplankton biomass. Correlation coefficients showed that temperature, pH value,the concentrations of silicate and nitrate exhibited linear relationship with phytoplankton biomass.With principal component analysis, pollution types which affected the abundance of phytoplankton included point sources such as municipal and industrial effluents, agricultural runoff and earth＇s surface water. Using multivariate stepwise regression method and taking the correlation analysis results into consideration, a multi-step regression equation was developed to predict the concentration of phytoplankton in September 2003. Combined results show that temperature, pH value, the concentrations of silicate and nitrate are the critical ecological factors affecting the phytoplankton biomass in Bohai Bay.

A novel porous silica-zirconia coating for improving bond performance of dental zirconia

Objective:To coat a zirconia surface with silica-zirconia using a dip-coating technique and evaluate its effect on resin-zirconia shear bond strength(SBS).Methods:A silica-zirconia suspension was prepared and used to coat a zirconia surface using a dip-coating technique.One hundred and eighty-nine zirconia disks were divided into three groups according to their different surface treatments(polishing,sandblasting,and silica-zirconia coating).Scanning electron microscopy(SEM),energy dispersive X-ray(EDX),and X-ray diffraction(XRD)were used to analyze the differently treated zirconia surfaces.Different primer treatments(Monobond N,Z-PRIME Plus,and no primer)were also applied to the zirconia surfaces.Subsequently,180 composite resin cylinders(Filtek Z350)were cemented onto the zirconia disks with resin cement(RelyX Ultimate).The SBS was measured after water storage for 24 h or 6 months.The data were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance(ANOVA).Results:SEM and EDX showed that the silica-zirconia coating produced a porous layer with additional Si,and XRD showed that only tetragonal zirconia was on the silica-zirconia-coating surface.Compared with the control group,the resin-zirconia SBSs of the,andblasting group and silica-zirconia-coating group were significantly increased(P<0.05).The silica-zirconia coating followed by the application of Monobond N produced the highest SBS(P<0.05).Water aging significantly reduced the resin-zirconia SBS(P<0.05).Conclusions:Dip-coating with silica-zirconia might be a feasible way to improve resin-zirconia bonding.

Patients＇ quality of life after laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy

Objective: This study was aimed at evaluating and comparing the quality of life in patients who underwent laparo-scopic and open cholecystectomy for chronic cholecystolithiasis. Methods: The study included 25 patients with laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC group) and 26 with open cholecystectomy (OC group). The quality of life was measured with the Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index (GLQI) preoperatively, thereafter regularly at 2, 5, 10 and 16 weeks after the operation. Results: The mean preoperative overall GLQI scores were 112.5 and 110.3 in LC and OC group respectively (P>0.05). In the LC group, the mean overall GLQI score reduced slightly to 110.0 two weeks after the operation (P>0.05). The LC group showed significant improvement in overall score and in the aspects of symptomatology, emotional and physiological status from 5 to 16 weeks postoperatively. In the OC group, the GLQI score reduced to 102.0 two weeks after surgery (P<0.05). Significant reductions were shown in the aspects of symptomatology, physiological and social status. The GLQI scores returned to the preoperative level of 115.6 ten weeks after the operation (P>0.05). The patients experienced significant improvements of GLQI sixteen weeks after OC operation (P<0.01-0.05). Within the 10 postoperative weeks, the LC group had significantly higher GLQI scores than the OC group (P<0.05). Conclusions: LC can improve the quality of life postoperatively better and more rapidly than OC. The assessment of quality of life assessment is a valid method for measuring the effects of surgical treatment.
