Sexism in the Classroom

An earlier version of this article appeared in our last issue, but, while printing the correct photograph, we listed the wrong person as the article's author. To rectify our error, we are printing a revised version, this time taking care to give credit where credit is due.     

Sexism in English

Sexism means the prejudice or discrimination based on sex. In language, it refers to language that contains prejudice against woman. It could be specified into four categories: derogatory words, pronominalization, idioms and markedness. History and cultural reasons are responsible for the appearance of sexism. In contemporary society, the words and phrases concerning sexism has been decreasing due to the endeavor of women themselves and people who are aware of the problem.     

Sexism in the English Lexicon

For a long time,there exists a considerable amount of sexism in English,especially in English lexicon.In this paper,the author will discuss some presentations of sexism in English lexicon,and try to analyze some factors which have a great influence on the existence of sexism in English.This paper wants to arouse more and more people to realize the importance and urgency of desexism.

近几年,语言与性别的关系已经成为社会语言学中一个日益重要的领域。笔者通过大量例子展示了反映在语言中的性别歧视现象,分析了这一现象产生的原因,并提出了消除该现象的方法。从研究的角度来看,只有对说话双方的性别进行认真系统的研究,才有可能消除语言中的性别歧视现象,从而使女性得到平等的待遇。     

浅析英语性别歧视的语言表达形式

英语是一支性别歧高比较严重的语言，特别在《圣经》哲学思想的影响下，性别歧视的词汇结构和语言表达比比皆是，我们通过详细的研究发现，英语的词形结构，词义，单数第三人称代词的指代作用等等，表明英语是一支阳性语言，或，非常巧合的是，在某种程度上恰恰体现了《圣经》哲学思想。《圣经-创世纪》是强调男尊女卑的道德准则，因上帝最先创造男人，女人由男人的肋骨制成。

Sexism in English Proverbs

Sexism in language exists in English proverbs.This paper studies over 200 most frequently used proverbs,21 of which use sexist words.The sexist language used in English proverbs cover some of the usual classification of sexism in general usage,but also has its unique usage.The paper later looks into the reasons for sexist language in English proverbs.

英语语言中存在着性别歧视语现象，本探讨了产生性别歧视的社会，历史和宗教原因，并列举了其诸多表现及消除这一现象的方法和途径。     

Research on the Sexism in English Language

English is not only a language tool,but also an ideological tool.Vocabulary of the language can faithfully reflect the culture it serves such as sexism.The oxford advanced learner’s dictionary explains it as below:the unfair treatment of people,especially women,because of their sex.Sexism is a social phenomenon which has a long history.It has been hiding in language and culture with the mainstream thinking.And it can be discovered from vocabularies,proverbs practical applications and metaphors.The present report aims to research the values of sexism through the mirror of English language.Furthermore,we will learn the social circumstances and reasons of this phenomenon.And we can make a more clear understanding of the state of women in English language countries.In this research,literature review and analysis are adopted.The findings are as follows:sexism real exists in many aspects of English language.There are many reasons accounting for this phenomenon like culture factors,history factors,psychological factors,political factors and so on.It may still last for a long time.However,the gradual change of sexism will be the tendency.Basing on the results of this research,sexism plays an important role in communication,education and literature.So the more you know it,the better you will avoid trouble.Therefore,the present research has important practical significances.

语言是社会的一面镜子,它反映了社会的发展、历史的演变、和人类的思维方式等等。在原始社会里因为艰难的生存环境、原始的生产模具和强健的生理力量成为生存的第一因素。而男性在这些因素中都有明显的优势,因此人类适应了环境,所以女性成为了男性的附属品。这种现象反映都英语语言中就是性别歧视,性别歧视在英语中广泛的存在。该文旨在于阐述性别歧视的英语语言中的表现及过程,并且研究语言于社会发展的关系。
