For countries to remain competitive in the global economy, it is important to cultivate the next generation of native mathematicians. However, this goal has been increasingly challenging in the United States where, despite the tremendous increase in university enrolment during recent decades, the number of students studying mathematics has remained almost constant. This article continues the work of Griffiths and Haciomeroglu (2014) in discussing how academics can expose students to the beauty and complexity of upper-level mathematics at an early age, with the goal of increasing the number of students gaining a degree in mathematics rather than committing to an alternative program of study. The primary focus of this work is to look at the results of a three-week summer camp in cryptography given to talented local high school students at the University of Central Florida, where the included topics went beyond those typically taught at the introductory level. Perceptions of the participants, gathered through interviews given toward the end of the course, will also be included. 相似文献

Research on the effectiveness of STEM-focused (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-focused) schools and other learning experiences (e.g., short-term camps) on student outcomes is sparse. This study documented perceptions of STEM content and careers for elementary, middle, and secondary school students participating in university-based summer camps focused on robotics. Attitudes before and after the camp experiences were compared across gender groups and grade levels. Middle school students showed greater growth on the surveys compared to their elementary and secondary school peers. Implications for the design and evaluation of STEM experiences include looking at longer, more intensive experiences. 相似文献

The underrepresentation and underachievement of African American students in mathematics is a national tragedy. One response to these problems is the design and implementation of mathematics intervention programs aimed at primarily African American student populations living in the inner city, many of whom are placed at risk. This article describes such a program and presents a philosophical framework grounded in empirical studies of effective schools. The authors suggest that key aspects of the program design help students avoid the trap of disidentification with the educational system. They also suggest that a large number of factors that have been demonstrated to be associated with higher student achievement (acting in combination) contribute to the effectiveness of this intervention program. 相似文献

In this randomized field trial of KindergARTen Camp, a 6-week summer enrichment program in literacy and the fine arts, we analyzed the summer learning outcomes of 93 treatment and 35 control students from high-poverty schools in Baltimore, Maryland. This experiment offers evidence concerning the causal effect of the program on 5 measures of students' literacy achievement. We found treatment effects during the summer months that were of both practical and statistical significance on the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) and the Word List A assessments. In addition, results from surveys of KindergARTen Camp students, parents, and teachers revealed strong satisfaction with the program. We conclude by discussing the contextual factors that may have contributed to these results. 相似文献

以549份高校新生入学教育满意度调查问卷数据为依据,运用有序Probit模型,探究影响新生入学教育实施效果的关键因素。结果表明:新生个人特征变量中的所学专业与报考专业是否一致、生源地、上大学之前是否了解新生入学教育以及新生入学教育的内容、老师讲授的方式、入学教育的时间安排、对学生管理制度的认识状况和新生入学教育能否满足学生的需要对新生入学教育实施效果具有显著影响。而性别差异、专业差异、对所学专业的认识程度以及对自身职业生涯规划认识程度对新生入学教育实施效果的影响不显著。 相似文献
