Strength in Numbers: Encouraging Every Staff Member to Work to Capacity

Libraries play a critical role in enhancing the learning landscape of the schools they support. In order for any library to become a powerhouse and a community meeting place, all library team members need to align with the library's vision, own it and begin to add their own strengths and talents purposefully. This article explores practical strategies for developing a visionary team, including supportive leadership, daily stand-up meetings, weekly staff meetings, special-focus teams, rostering and the “five conversations” approach. These effective strategies can be implemented across a broad range of library workforce contexts in order to ensure the most effective workforce teams are built.

A Different Way to Get to a Better Bottom Line in Publishing

Considerable changes are taking place in the publishing industry, and to survive publishers cannot sit back and wait for the changes to take effect. With e-books supposedly pulling ahead in the publisher’s race, the publishing industry must revise its business models to adjust to new demands. While e-books are attractive, print is still the major revenue engine within the world of publishing, and digital print is the future. Considering the entirety of the supply chain, it can be seen that digital book printing books saves money, supports more titles and increases efficiency. There is a different way to get a better bottom line, and publishers must consider the whole value chain, not just the unit price.

Wikis are part of the suite of Web 2.0 technologies enhancing collaboration and communication. This article describes the ways in which one academic health sciences library has utilized wiki software. The Eccles Health Sciences Library has found wikis to be valuable collaboration tools. Case scenarios and software selection recommendations will be outlined. Examples of collaborations using wikis include grant writing, strategic planning, departmental documentation, and committee work. Comparisons are made between externally hosted and locally hosted wiki software.

Preparing to Teach in Cyberspace:

Teaching librarians to teach is an ongoing concern for instruction librarians. The literature confirms that many library and information science programs provide no formal coursework to prepare their students for a career in user education. This lack of formal preparation is compounded by additional demands for a grounding in educational technology and pedagogy. On-the-job-training has become the rule rather than the exception for most instruction librarians. This paper addresses practical concerns encountered at the University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries in providing resources and empowering education for librarians and staff members who teach, as well as the philosophical adoption of Computer-Based Education (CBE) principles and a modification of Raganathan's five laws of library science to create a flexible teaching and learning environment for real and vitrual libraries.
