Raise Your Profile: Build Your Program

ABSTRACT

To raise the library's profile within the campus community, it is critical to create a strategic plan and align library goals with those of the university. At George Washington University's Gelman Library, the instruction librarians gained internal and external support to hire two new instruction librarians to better support collaboration with the new university writing program. The library then used assessment data to successfully advocate for an additional two positions.     

Build Your Program by Building Your Team: Inclusively Transforming Services,Staffing and Spaces

ABSTRACT

User feedback told the story of the largest and busiest campus library being dated in both physical form and programmatic function. Under the framework of a newly-developed strategic plan, library leadership initiated a comprehensive and inclusive assessment program to understand fully user needs by engaging users, campus partners, and, importantly, library personnel. Simultaneously, they embarked on a review of change management literature for guidance on implementing the required transformation. Informed by the change management philosophy of John Kotter, the library utilized the findings of the assessment program to craft and implement a sustainable transformation of its services, staffing, and spaces.

Reference by Your Side: Redesigning the Library Help Desk

ABSTRACT

This bibliographic essay examines recent (1994–2006) research into the evaluation of reference effectiveness. Different methods for evaluating traditional in-person reference services are compared and contrasted from an unobtrusive or obtrusive methodology perspective, including those that use the “Willingness to Return” factor and the Wisconsin-Ohio Reference Evaluation Program (WOREP). A review of emerging trends is provided as well as recommendations for future research.     

Thieves in Your Stacks:

Book thefts and mutilation remain common problems in college libraries. What may not be common is the recognition that thieves often target federal government publications. This article has three purposes: (1) to demonstrate that some government documents are indeed rare and valuable; (2) to recommend ways of identifying which documents are in danger; and (3) to suggest strategies for protecting those documents at risk.

The persistence of systemic and individual racism both within society and higher education influences the behavior and attitudes of librarians of color and their white colleagues. Racism, prejudice and discrimination in academe often have a direct impact on the recruitment and retention of African American librarians and other librarians of color. Issues of job satisfaction and initiatives for constructing an environment conducive to racial and ethnic inclusion within academe are addressed.     

Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide: Smoking and Drinking in Disney's Animated Classics

Disney films have long interested effects researchers, who have consistently shown the "quot;wholesome"quot; image generated by the company is misrepresentative. This content analysis explored tobacco and alcohol exposure in 24 Disney G-rated, animated, feature-length motion pictures from 1937 to 2000 and found 381 incidents of substance use. Over the decades, tobacco use tended to decrease while alcohol use increased. Virtually no antiuse messages were seen in these films directed to young children.     

Fifteen Ways to Meet Your User:

Current reports and publications from government agencies and professional organizations emphasize the changing populations entering higher education programs. Predictions indicate the current majority of traditional college students - those students entering immediately after high school, attending full time, and being between the ages of 17 and 22 - will be in the minority by the year 2000. In addition, college and university programs are becoming more diverse and new programs are continually developing. This is most evident in the numbers of new specialized journals that appear each year. As libraries are developing and maintaining bibliographic instruction programs, the balance of meeting the needs of newly identified user groups as well as newly developing programs becomes more of a challenge. In this brief article, I suggest fifteen alternatives that can be used to assist some our new users and new disciplines. This list is to be considered a beginning point, and needs to be adapted to the unique and individual characteristics of each campus community. The fifteen ways are organized in three broad groups: before the users enter the campus; entering the library building; and outreach on campus.

ABSTRACT

This article provides practical tips on how to build your personal collection of materials on Indigenous topics. Before taking steps in acquiring content, consider the place of print and electronic material in your life as a librarian and Indigenous person. Rephrase foundational documents such as collection development policies, Ranganathan's laws of library science, and Saricks' appeal factors in ways that reflect your Indigenous worldview. Review the steps you take and might take to build this collection, starting with assessing what resources you already have access to, and develop your list of ten authors to watch.     

Enriching Your Wealth of Resources by Marketing Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is a service that increases user access to resources, however it is of little use if no one knows about it. ILL statistics at libraries generally show that the service as a whole is well used, but upon closer inspection it becomes clear that these high usage statistics are generated by library power users, and not by new, novice, or intermediate users. When conducting thorough research, it frequently extends beyond the holdings of an individual library, which makes ILL essential. Therefore, it is important for users to know about and use this service. While ILL enhances what libraries can offer, very few libraries focus their marketing on ILL. Instead, most libraries simply lump ILL into the marketing of library resources and services in general. In this article we analyze libraries that have broken out of the mold to market ILL in innovative, cost-effective ways, and we will share the marketing campaign we undertook at Wheaton College (IL).

This article presents tips and strategies for testing user experience, suggests a number of different popular technologies and tools that are used in the UX field, and lays out a plan for sharing and utilizing data to make improvements on your Web site. It is the goal of this article to present a model for improving Web site usability that can be scaled up or down depending on the resources available at your institution.     

Chat Widgets: Placing Your Virtual Reference Services at Your User's Point(s) of Need

The senior population in America is expected to double from 35 million in 2004 to 70 million by 2030, creating an ever-growing need for libraries to provide quality senior services and programs. This article discusses the services and programs that the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) offers for senior groups, the issue of additional services that the SAPL can provide in the future to accommodate the needs of seniors groups and those with disabilities, and what services other public libraries provide to senior citizens.
