The challenges of making school guidance culturally responsive: narratives of pastoral needs of ethnic minority students in Hong Kong secondary schools

Many Hong Kong schools are concerned about the growing number of ethnic minority students. How they are supported and how the diversity of their pastoral needs is fulfilled become critical. This article examines teachers’, students’ and parents’ narratives of the cross‐cultural experience of ethnic minority students from India, Pakistan, Philippines, Nepal and Thailand, and the diversity of those students’ pastoral needs. The qualitative data were collected from interviews, through which the constructs of 32 teachers and 32 students from three secondary schools were explored. Four groups of focus‐group interviews were conducted, in which 15 parents were involved. This article argues that to implement the ethos of caring, it is not only necessary for the school to promote the intercultural sensitivity of all practitioners, but equally important to develop a connected school system where ethnic minority students and parents can be consistently supported in the subsystems of classroom, school and home.

书法是中华民族的文化瑰宝,是人类文明的宝贵财富,也是基础教育的重要内容,对学生核心素养的培养起着不可替代的作用。在中小学书法教学中,有效的课堂评价能够确保课程质量的提升,指导教师提高教学效果,促进学生主动练习书法,提高文化素养。文章针对书法课堂教学过程,对如何开展课堂教学评价进行论述。     

Martin Buber,Hasidism, and Jewish spirituality: the implications for education and for pastoral care

Abstract

There is a legal requirement that schools engage with the spiritual aspects of education, which encompasses pastoral care. This reflects the ethical sensibility that is present in individuals and underlies interactions with Others; and which should be part of the ethos of all educational institutions and especially schools. This is because spirituality is important to leading a moral life and to understanding the Other. The article considers specifically the potential of Jewish spirituality, and uses Martin Buber’s thought, to gain a better understanding of its contribution to education and to pastoral care. In the first part, we comment on the ‘basic words’, I-Thou and I-It, which are connected with Hasidism, the Jewish spiritual movement which had a great influence on Martin Buber. Hasidism understands that it is our duty to find and connect with the ‘divine sparks’, as genuine relations merge with the Divine, and when humans relate genuinely to one another, they relate to God. This is crucial for understanding the superiority of I-Thou relations over I-It relations. In the second and third parts of the article, we consider the implications of this understanding of Jewish spirituality for education and for pastoral care. This is done through highlighting the importance of I-Thou relations if the spiritual aspects of education and of pastoral care are to be encouraged and fulfilled.     

The road to self‐efficacy: a discussion of generic training in mental health competencies for educational professionals

This discussion aims to consider the value of training educational professionals in mental health competencies. Primary Mental Health Workers working in the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service have traditionally used a consultation model when working with schools. In this article I consider moving the emphasis away from consultancy work, instead putting training at the cornerstone of improving mental health in schools. I believe that local practices using consultation can create a ‘dependency’ culture, inhibiting the development of self‐efficacy in those involved in pastoral care in educational settings. Instead, an alternative method of improving confidence and self‐efficacy amongst educational practitioners is by delivering a comprehensive training course, which aims to provide a range of competencies in mental health. Training, which provides skills in low‐level therapeutic approaches for pupils and students, in conjunction with a broad understanding of mental illness and mental health issues, could be a highly effective method of responding to the maxim ‘mental health is everyone’s business’.

This article proposes that spirituality is an essential element of pastoral care, and that it can be promoted through examination of one's sense of vocation, bodywork, journal writing and nurturing soul friends.     

论陶渊明的当代文化意义

陶渊明在中国文化史上具有无上价值。一千五百年来,陶渊明的文化意义不断被挖掘,并受到极大的推崇。在当代中国,陶渊明尤其显出他的重大价值。种种精神危机表明,今天更需要陶渊明。陶渊明的独立人格以及追求自由的精神,会感召我们勇敢地面对人生的困境,冲破精神枷锁。陶渊明的真率人格,激励我们努力做真人、讲真话,回归生活的本真状态。陶渊明创造的田园诗,是美育的好教材。陶渊明的巨大的人文价值,应该成为人们自身修为、清洁灵魂的良药;同时,也应该成为改变不良社会风气的一种精神资源。

“书以载道”及“文以载道”浅议——读钟家鼎先生的《守望中国书法》

本文认为《守望中国书法》一书对"书以载道"这一问题的论述相当深刻,不但论及中国书法承载着中国社会的文化精神,而且提出中国书法承载着中国社会的政治意志。本文表示赞成,并且认为无论是书法的"道",还是文章的"道",指的都是中国的历史文化。因此,所谓"书以载道"、"文以载道",简言之,就是中国古人以庄重的书法和典雅的古文来表现中国文化,实际上就是一个关于内容与形式关系的问题。     

中国古代帝王书法现象审视——从学术价值、政治干预及文化认知的角度

帝王书法现象是中国历史文化的一个独特现象。从学术本位审视,帝王书法是中国书法艺术史一个有机构成部分;帝王以其政治资源对推动和影响中国书法发展功不可没,也难免产生一定负面消极影响;帝王书法现象是正确认识中国历史文化的一个窗口,值得学术界进行广泛且多角度的交叉探究。     

书法教育在对外汉语专业文化类课程建设中的作用

文化类课程建设是对外汉语专业课程建设中不可忽视的内容,也是凸显对外汉语专业特色的重要内容。文化类课程包括文化理论课和文化技能课,二者相辅相成不可偏废。书法是重要的文化技能课,它能有效提高学生汉字书写的能力,能够培养学生中国传统文化品格和艺术气质,同时还能够塑造他们的灵魂世界。加强书法课教学,还应营造良好的书法文化氛围,打造艺术化的汉字文化环境,使学生在潜移默化中受到熏陶。     

书法文化链与“大书法文化”发展战略研究——关于中国书法文化产业发展的战略规划的评述和展望

作为中国文化象征的中国书法，其发展必须从宏观文化角度进行考虑，需要一个宏观跨领域的战略规划指导。本文提出了一个建立于书法文化链基础上的发展战略构想。在总结了中国书法的书法文化链是书法在中国文化体系中起到链接、枢纽、节点功能并形成的涉及面广、内容丰富和底蕴深厚的文化体系和集群；在此基础上的“大书法文化”发展战略对书法文化的全面弘扬和可持续发展、乃至对促进带动我国视觉艺术产业发展，具有重大意义。本文同时提出了基于“大书法文化”理念的书法文化发展纲要的研究内容构想，并探讨和展望了书法文化的价值体系、书法文化目前发展的现状和主要问题、书法文化在国民经济地位测算、未来学术研究等相关关键问题。     

The Relationship between the Concepts of ‘Pastoral Care’ and ‘Authority’

Abstract

The term ‘pastor’ clearly has a religious origin and is thought of in connection with providing spiritual sustenance. Such provision must be seen in relation to some concept of authority since the pastor's job could otherwise not be done.

It is likely that the connotation of a pastor in the religious sense has been carried over to the schools, especially when it is considered that schools are traditionally structures of authority.

What is necessary is to insist upon the conceptual link between ‘pastoral care’ and ‘authority’ explicitly, so as to judge the final appropriateness of ‘pastoral care’ in schools.

关于当前高等师范院校书法艺术教育的思考

书法艺术是中华优秀传统文化的代表,是中华传统文化的重要组成部分。在大、中、小学开展书法艺术教育对提高学生综合素质具有重要意义,是实现人才培养,传承和发展中国优秀传统文化的重要途径。国家教育部对中小学书法教育提出了明确要求,这给中小学书法艺术教育的发展带来了契机,也给高师的书法艺术教育提出了更高要求,高师的书法艺术教育应该走在学校书法教育的最前面。本文就高师开展书法教育的重要意义,当前高师书法艺术教育的学生书法基础、书法专业师资队伍以及高师开展书法艺术教育的现状作了分析,并就如何开展好高师院校书法艺术教育提出了夯实学生书法基础,提高师资队伍书法基本素养和加强书法艺术教育的软、硬件建设等三点具体建议。     

Towards a spiritual pedagogy of pastoral welfare and care

Abstract

This paper considers the role of spirituality in the practice of pastoral welfare and care in English state schools. Set against an educational landscape of increasingly aggressive neoliberal interests combined with growing public disquiet over the mental welfare of young people, the author examines how spirituality might in response contribute to a pedagogy of pastoral welfare for pupil well-being. The paper begins by foregrounding the policy contexts for pastoral education in England and the challenges presented by the increasingly performative cultures that schools, children and young people have become subjected to. Highlighting concerns around the well-being of children and young people, the paper advances a spiritual pedagogy in pastoral care predicated on pivotal interrelated attributes of intrapersonal transcendence, care and educational practice. The paper then considers the possibilities presented by the spiritual realm in pastoral welfare and the positioning of this as an educational pedagogy and practice.     

从艺术书法到文化书法——当代书法的时代性和价值取向

艺术书法是书法的主体形态。书法线条是构成艺术书法之美的主要元素,草书是艺术书法的代表,艺术书法首先要养＂眼＂悦＂耳＂,宗旨是养心。书法文化是书法的价值取向。汉字的表意功能是文化书法生存的基础,文化书法是汉字的文化性的内在体现,是社会发展的时代要求,缺乏理想情怀和思想深度的文化书法作品,传之不远。实用书法是书法生存的根基,艺术书法的主体地位长期存在,文化书法数量虽少但作用巨大,艺术转身文化是亮丽的、痛苦的、艰难的,多元书法并存最终归于文化书法。     

Developing and Implementing a Whole-School Policy for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

The OFSTED inspection report on Stalham High School praised the quality of its pastoral care and PSE, but also noted that the promotion of students' cultural and spiritual development across the whole curriculum was less satisfactory. The writer describes how the school set about responding to this weakness through the development of a whole-school policy. It was decided to develop an overarching policy for social, moral, cultural and spiritual development. Once an outline policy was produced, the views of staff were sought in a way which also increased their awareness of and involvement in the programme.     

论学生文化共生观培育策略

随着多元文化教育的深入发展,培育学生文化共生观成为课程目标。学生在学校的教育影响下形成对多元文化的认识、理解、关怀、包容,并在这一基础上引导自身行为的态度倾向与价值判断。以文化共生为教育的价值取向有其理论基础,并且课程培育学生文化共生观具有重要的价值和作用,学校培育学生文化共生观的策略应该围绕着课程改革、教师素养和学生自觉三方面进行探讨。     

The Influence of Classic Chinese Philosophy of Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism on Classroom Discipline in Hong Kong Junior Secondary Schools

Discipline is a crucial aspect of teachers' and students' classroom lives. Hong Kong secondary teachers, as elsewhere, are concerned with students' misbehaviour. This article examines teachers' constructs of classroom discipline and strategies adopted for behaviour management. Qualitative data were collected by interviews and classroom observation. Sixty teachers were involved. Eighteen classrooms were observed. The influence of the three schools of classic Chinese philosophy, Confucianism, Taoism and Legalism, emerged as a main theme from the data. It was prominent as their key principles were incorporated into the teachers' personal system of classroom discipline. The findings illuminate the influence of Chinese culture in Hong Kong classrooms. Implications for the promotion of culturally responsive classrooms and the development of educational policies on pastoral care are drawn.
