The Power of Language,Learning and Socialization: Romani and Ebonics

This article draws attention to the role one’s language plays in socialization and explains the misunderstandings and conflicts over integration of the Roma in the Czech Republic. Recognizing the role of home language leads to successful socialization. By not demanding that schools account for home language in the process of teaching, the Roma have implicitly agreed that Czech is the natural way through which children of diverse cultural backgrounds access education and adapt. Children of minorities and namely, the Roma, have been disadvantaged by cultural assumptions enabling teachers, curricula, and textbooks to construct the profile of a Czech student in a way that precludes his or her multicultural origin. To compare, the study provides insight into the conflict between Standard American English and Afro-American English and highlights its factors, legal resolutions, and contemporary situation. The article also reviews research on bilingual classrooms and learning in the United States and suggests that it is relevant to the contentious interrelationship of standard Czech and Romani at schools.

The more things change,the more they stay the same: African American English,language policy,and African American learners

Abstract

Despite the substantive body of research on African American Language (AAL), designating it a meaningful, rule-governed language system and the first language of many African Americans, schools in the US have systematically failed to integrate a language policy related to African American English learners (AAELs). In this article, we employ a critical discourse and policy analysis to examine two major policies related to AAL and AAELs – the Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School Children et al. v. Ann Arbor School District, a federal district case in Michigan known as the Ann Arbor Decision, and the Ebonics Resolution adopted by the Oakland California Board of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Our analysis reveals three themes across these texts – they affirm AAL as a ‘home and community language’ in its own right, mandate teachers to take ‘appropriate action’ in teaching AAL speakers, and dispel notions that AAL stems from cultural, social, and economic deprivation.     

Approaching Civic Responsibility Using Guided Controversies About Environmental Issues

Abstract. We implemented a series of three guided controversies to provide experience in environmental problem solving to students in a science course designed for nonmajors. Students wrote essays in response to their experiences in each controversy; we analyzed these essays for five problem-solving criteria. A questionnaire administered at the end of the course supported an increased interest in civic engagement as a result of the integration of the controversies within the course. These teaching strategies and learning outcomes appear to be instrumental in equipping students as citizens with the skills needed to engage in decision making regarding environmental problems.

1917年到1920年是中国新学理论发难、探讨以及初步形成的重要时期。在这一时期内,以《新青年》为阵营,围绕着学革新问题分成了以陈独秀、胡适为代表的两大学改良派系。本试图通过还原、分析这两大改良派系的分歧、对立,来说明陈独秀、胡适的学主张分别代表了新学发生期的两种不同建设思路和模式;进而说明中国新学中的两大创作阵营——“为人生派”与“为艺术派”分别是陈独秀、胡适艺术思想的承担、实践。     

论当代德国经济伦理学的学派论争

在当代德国经济伦理学的发展过程中,产生了霍曼(Karl Homann)的“经济秩序伦理学”、科斯洛夫斯基(Peter KoslOWSki)的“伦理的经济学”、乌尔利希(Peter Ulrich)的“整合性的经济伦理学”。这些基本学派的产生及其理论论争,不仅构成了德国经济伦理学发展的独特景观,而且具有重大的理论和实践意义。澄清了道德和市场经济的关系,有利于提高现实经济生活的道德质量;形成了独特的理论风格,丰富了当代世界的经济伦理学。因此,为发展中国特色的经济伦理学,我们应该自觉地借鉴当代德国经济伦理学及其学派论争的成果,积极展开经济伦理学的学派论争。     

A multi-criteria approach for the group assessment of an academic course: A case study

The present paper aims at proposing a structured methodology to evaluate the results of an academic training course addressed to postgraduate students. The evaluation process intends to identify the efficacy of an education course by means of a comparison between the general objectives and the results expected by the students. Since the evaluated aspects by the students, detected by means of questionnaires, are both quantitative and qualitative, the proposed methodology is based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). In order to facilitate the evaluation process, answers have been modelled by means of linguistic variables. In particular, different evaluation scales have been used and each one is characterized by different levels associated to different fuzzy numbers.
