China's 10 most significant S&T developments in 2007

Under the auspices of the Academic Divisions of both the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)and the Chinese Academy of Engineering(CAE)and Science Times,a selection of the 10 most significant S&T developments in China in 2007 was recently made in Beijing.Some 540 Members of CAS and CAE took part in the voting.Its results were released on 20 January.

Wildlife Conservation and Research in China

Wildlife resources are important strategic bioresources in China. This paper analyzes the current threats to China’s wildlife, outlines achievements made by Chinese conservation biologists, and presents suggestions for future developments in this field. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) plays an important role in the conservation of wildlife and provides significant intellectual support for conservation research and sustainable development.     

CAS issues its 2008 Science ＆ Society Series

CAS recently released its 2008 Science and Society Series consisting of three reports on scientific progress, high-tech advancement and sustainable development. Among them, the latter two were completed under the organization of the CAS Institute of Policy a~d Management. Copies of the Series were sent to deputies and members of the National People＇s Congress and the Chinese People＇s Political Consultative Conference in session.     

Mega-science projects at CAS

With the support form Chinese government, CAS has been undertaking several national megascience projects in line with both the requirements of the national socioeconomic development and cuttingedge development of science and technology in the world.     

The 11th CAS General Assembly Held in Beijing

As their first plenary meetings in the new century, the 11th General Assembly of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the Sixth General Assembly of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) were convened in Beijing from May 28 to June 1. A total of 490 CAS members and three foreign members attended the CAS conference.     

Book series on China’s S&T History

Thanks to their decades of painstaking efforts, Chinese S&T historians recently saw two book series on ancient Chinese history of science and technology and astronomy in print. Coordinated by the CAS Institute for the History of Natural Science, these anthologies are regarded as the most systematic and authoritative works ever authored by Chinese scholars to demonstrate the S&T development in China's history. MPS／CAS Partner Group on Colloid and Interface Science

The Partner Group on Colloid and Interface Science is based on the International Joint Laboratory, established in the former Beijing Institute of Photographic Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and was incorporated into the Center for Molecular Science of the Institute of Chemistry, CAS in 1999. The Partner Group aims at research on molecular assembly of biomimetic membranes and the synthesis of nano-structured materials by way of training younger Chinese scientists and making use of the advanced facilities in Germany. Both sides cooperate closely in sectors in which they have a common interest to push forward the development of related sciences in China. The group leader, Li Junbai, has received many awards and has obtained much financial support inside China. On the German side, the Partner Group is hosting or participating in several research and development projects commissioned by the Max Planck Society and the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Promoting High-tech Industrialization through Mechanism Innovation

With the further implementation of the knowledge innovation program (KIP), piloted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), encouraging progress has been made in contributing to the development of the country's high-tech industry, and forging S&T cooperation with local governments and industrial sectors. This was revealed at the Second CAS Conference on High-tech Industrialization April 25 - 29 in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province.     

CAS Announces Academicians Elected in 2009

Thirty five Chinese scientists and six of their colleagues from Canada, France and the United States were elected into CAS in 2009. The announcement was made by CAS President LU Yongxiang at a press conference held on December 4, 2009, in Beijing. CAS Vice President LI Jinghai read the list of the new Members.     

Strive for Leapfrog Progress and Sustainable Development through Innovation and Open a New Chapter for the Knowledge Innovation Program

The 2004 annual work conference of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is held at an important moment. Achievements Notched by KIP Pilot Project Over Past Four Years

In order to promote the national capability in S&T innovation in an all-round way, the Party's Central Committee and the State Council made a key decision of great strategic significance to initiate a pilot project for the national Knowledge Innovation Program (KIP) at CAS in 1998. CAS expert receives Tribology Gold Medal

Research Progress in the CAS Action Plan for the Development of Western China

To speed up the regional development in central and western China is a strategic decision made by the Chinese government at the turn of the century. For CAS research professionals, active participation into the campaign is a solemn historic commitment and a major task of the CAS-piloted national Knowledge Innovation Program. In early 2000, the CAS leadership formulated an Action Plan for Western China Development and initiated a research program aiming at the environmental evolution,ecological restoration and the sustainable exploitation of the local resources in the region.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS） was founded on 1 November, 1949, one month after the establishment of New China.
