In this article, Rachel Fyson of the Centre for Social Work in the School of Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Nottingham reports the findings of a study into sexually inappropriate or abusive behaviour occurring between pupils in special schools in four local authorities in England. The behaviours identified ranged from relatively minor misconduct, such as exposure of genitals and use of sexualised language, through to serious acts of sexual abuse, including rape. Although the majority (88%) of special schools had noted sexualised behaviours of some kind on a regular basis, only a minority (19%) had specific policies in place to guide staff responses to such incidents. It was apparent that responses to sexual behaviour, and policy decisions about whether or when to refer to outside agencies, varied widely both within and between schools. The implications of these findings for the well-being of all pupils are discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Urban schools in many OECD countries are contending with policy trends that squeeze budgets and incentivize parent fundraising. The trend may be most pronounced and longstanding in the US, where parent groups and local education foundations have turned increasing attention to raising funds to support additional services, staff, or programs for schools to which admittance is primarily based on residence. This article argues that private fundraising for public schools contributes to the creation of what public economics, public choice, and urban planning theorists have described as ‘clubs’ that may exacerbate inequality. It examines two school districts that have adopted policies aiming to curb this potential inequity: the Santa Monica Malibu Unified School District in California and Portland School District in Oregon. A case study approach was used to detail the policies adopted and explore their potential for de-clubbing as well as resistance encountered to reallocation of dollars at the district level.  相似文献

Over a decade of research has demonstrated the positive effects of extended school day programs on various elementary and middle school student outcomes, both in the short and long term. The efficacy of extended school day programs in promoting academic outcomes among high school students is less well understood. This study contributes to the existing literature by examining school attendance, credit attainment, and standardized reading and math scores in a group of students at risk of academic failure who participated in extended school day programming. The study compared their outcomes to those of a group of demographically similar students who did not participate in the program. The extended school day program is provided within a full-service Schools Uniting Neighborhoods (SUN) Community School (CS) in the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area. Results suggest an advantage for SUN students in terms of better school attendance and earning credits toward graduation, but not in terms of standardized test scores. Implications for future research and extended school day policy are discussed.  相似文献

It is generally acknowledged that interdisciplinary collaboration is essential in the management of children with special educational needs. Ways in which professionals may be prepared for this responsibility have not received much consideration. This article is the first in the Supplement to report a project at the undergraduate stage, for two professions: teachers and speech therapists. This paper deals with the hydration of a blend of Portland cement and activated coal gangue in order to determine the relationship between the degree of hydration and compressive strength development. The hydration process was investigated by various means: isothermal calorimetry, thermal analysis, non-evaporable water measurement, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results show that the activated coal gangue is a pozzolanic material that contributes to the hydration of the cement blend. The pozzolanic reaction occurs over a period of between 7 and 90 d, consuming portlandite and forming both crystal hydrates and ill-crystallized calcium silicate hydrates. These hydrates are similar to those found in pure Portland cement. The results show that if activated coal gangue is substituted for cement at up to 30% (w/w), it does not significantly affect the final compressive strength of the blend. A long-term compressive strength improvement can in fact be achieved by using activated coal gangue as a supplementary cementing material. The relationship between compressive strength and degree of hydration for both pure Portland cement and blended cement can be described with the same equation. However, the parameters are different since blended cement produces fewer calcium silicate hydrates than pure Portland cement at the same degree of hydration.  相似文献

While teacher educators agree that teaching is a profoundly moral activity, little attention has been placed on the moral perspectives about teaching and learning of those entering the teaching workforce. As a way of illustrating the importance of helping both future teachers become aware of their own moral compasses and teacher educators to understand ways in which such knowledge can support their students, I use methods of qualitative inquiry to explore the life history of one European American preservice elementary teacher in the USA. In recounting the events of her life, Rachel Rosenberg demonstrates how she uses her own life experiences to frame the moral aspects of her future role as a teacher and especially her perspectives on literacy teaching and learning. The methods used here to elicit and analyse Rachel’s story can be useful to teacher educators who want to understand how the moral perspectives embedded in teachers’ stories influence the ways in which teachers approach and enact the work of teaching.  相似文献

This article focuses on the behaviour of nine year old Rachel as she constructed knowledge about fractions over a five month period. In particular, it is concerned to explain behavioural regularities for which certain mental processes, called schemes, are deemed responsible. Particular patterns of behaviour are accounted for by different kinds of scheme. Schemes that Rachel used to solve fractional number problems will first be distinguished. The roles played by Rachel's schemes are examined in the dynamic setting of a teaching experiment. An analysis of interactions between certain schemes is provided in the context of Rachel's efforts to learn about fifths.  相似文献

分析三乙醇胺在不同掺入形式和不同掺量时对硅酸盐水泥的助磨效果及其它性能的影响,并对三乙醇胺的助磨机理进行了探讨。从实验结果看,三乙醇胺掺入量为0.05%,掺入浓度为40%时具有最好效果;在相同实验条件下水泥细度(0.08mm筛筛余)由10.76%下降到1.89%,比表面积由348.7m~2/kg增加到412.1m~2/kg,而水泥的28d强度则由48.7MPa提高至56.2MPa。实验结果还表明,当三乙醇胺浓度低于40%时,水泥细度虽然显著下降,但水泥的比表面积反而降低,同时水泥出现急凝,这在其它文献中从未报道。  相似文献
