C.P.斯诺两种文化分裂命题的现代分析

2 0世纪 5 0年代 ,英国学者C .P .斯诺在《两种文化》的演讲中指出 ,科技与人文正被割裂为两种文化 ,科技和人文知识分子正在分化为两个言语不通、社会关怀和价值判断迥异的群体 ,这必然会妨碍社会和个人的进步和发展。当前 ,两种文化的分裂非但没有缓解 ,反有愈演愈裂之势 ,主要表现为“科学主义”的盛行。要促成科技与人文的融合 ,首先应给科技一个准确的人文定位 ,破除对科技的盲目崇拜。在此基础上 ,对教育的重新审视是二者融合的希望所在     

Forty Years on: Touchstones Now

The Touchstones series of poetry anthologies was first published in the UK between 1968 and 1972 in five volumes. Over a million copies and three revisions later, Touchstones Now 11–14 appeared in the summer of 2008. Few, if any, books for the classroom can claim such longevity. In this article, the compilers of the anthologies, Michael and Peter Benton, look back over the 40 years of the series’ life. They reflect upon the principles which have guided their choices; and the social and political pressures, often exerted by governments, which they have confronted in their attempt to help school students become enthusiastic, committed and discriminating readers of poetry. Bionote: Michael and Peter Benton taught in various secondary schools in the UK for 10 years before becoming University Lecturers in Education. Separately, they have published many articles and academic books on the teaching of English and, together, they have collaborated on a variety of anthologies for the classroom in addition to the “Touchstones” series, notably their books on poetry and painting, “Double Vision”, “Painting with Words” and “Picture Poems”. Michael Benton is Emeritus Professor of Education, University of Southampton; Peter Benton is Emeritus Fellow, St Cross College, & formerly Lecturer in Education, Department of Educational Studies, University of Oxford.     

The Bologna Process: 15 Years Later

The article analyzes the basic documents adopted by the ministers of education of the country participants in the Bologna Process at their latest meeting in Yerevan, Armenia. It identifies the problems and challenges facing national education systems during the present stage of development, and explores the priorities and obligations of these countries to promote cooperation and integration in the framework of a common educational space. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of statistical data and national reports on the implementation of the main objectives established by European agreements during the current decade. A key factor in ensuring mutual trust and creating a common space for higher education is establishing a multitiered quality assurance system at the institutional, national, and European levels. The author argues for the need to review and approve the new Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG).

A male graduate student attended seven sessions of inte-grative counseling to resolve problematic emotions associated with delayed bereavement ten years after the suicide of a childhood friend. First, a cognitive approach tested and modified beliefs about healing. Second, the client experientially explored and resolved unexpressed emotions. Third, a narrative approach reconstructed new meaning about the death of the client's friend.     

Cruelty in Maternity Wards: Fifty Years Later

Fifty years have passed since a scandal broke over inhumane treatment of laboring women in U.S. hospitals, yet first-person and eyewitness reports document that medical care providers continue to subject childbearing women to verbal and physical abuse and even to what would constitute sexual assault in any other context. Women frequently are denied their right to make informed decisions about care and may be punished for attempting to assert their right to refusal. Mistreatment is not uncommon and persists because of factors inherent to hospital social culture. Concerted action on the part of all stakeholders will be required to bring about systemic reform.

The Southern Manifesto: A Doctrine of Resistance 60 Years Later

ABSTRACT

This article illustrates the historic relationship between the Brown v. Board of Education decision and the school choice movement. It will discuss the immediate push back to Brown particularly from Southern states that were resistant to desegregating public schools; a move that would provide African-American parents with educational choice for their children. Within the United States Congress 101 members, most from formerly Confederate states, drafted what is commonly known as the Southern Manifesto intent on reversing the Court’s decision and urging states to defy the law. Sixty years after the signing of the Southern Manifesto, there is still a coalition pushing for “freedom of choice,” this time with a sincere interest in the well-being of students trapped in the nation's lowest-performing schools and a mandate for equal opportunity, racial, ethnic, and gender equality.
