A series of surveys provide the basis for comments on the mathematical education of engineers in Australia. The respondents were graduates and employers. This paper summarises their views and contrasts undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The former tend to be traditional and structured. There is a need for more course work with the latter with more emphasis on mathematical modelling. Desirable professional attributes which should come from education with mathematics rather than mere training in mathematics are listed as they are seen in the milieu of the market place.  相似文献

In France, training in engineering was exclusively provided by the ‘Grandes Ecoles’. In this context, the French universities have been developing engineering training alongside traditional training courses. The growth in engineering training has been particularly important during the last five years. The author describes the conditions of the setting up and the nature of the different training courses and gives an evaluation after the first twenty years of their existence. Engineering education should be relevant to the needs of our industry as industry absorbs the large majority of our engineering students, either directly or indirectly. The contact between industry and engineering students has therefore to be stimulated. As no legal obligation exists in Belgium, this is left entirely to the initiative of the professors and the engineers in industry. We will explain how at our university those contacts are developed for the mechanical engineering students. We will explain our aims, our working conditions and circumstances, our results and the role of the research. The art however is to stimulate the students, and to convince the industry of the importance of those contacts in the education of our and their future engineers.  相似文献
