Networks for Success: Preparing Mexican American AVID College Students for Credentials,Completion, and the Workforce

This qualitative study examines how Mexican American students participating in an AVID for Higher Education course perceived their preparation for the workforce and efficacy of completing a college credential. A focus group approach was used to explore how social and cultural networks (networks for success) contribute to college completion. The study is guided by the theoretical framework of building social networks through the availability and reception of social capital. Findings include Mexican American students’ efficacious beliefs of how networks for success assist in their persistence toward college graduation and entry into the workforce. Major themes are college success and social/cultural capital.

在我国民办高等教育发展的大背景下,西部民族地区迎来了快速发展的良好机遇,如西部大开发与地方经济的大发展、高等教育大众化和全面开放的新格局、良好的法律与政策环境等.但是,也面临着种种严峻挑战,主要表现在观念滞后、办学条件艰难、教师队伍力量薄弱和激烈竞争等方面.     

博士研究生退出和延期的数据测算与讨论

发展博士生教育,培养造就大批德才兼备的高层次人才,是我国经济社会转型发展的客观要求。在博士生培养过程中,需要辩证分析和客观看待博士生的分流退出和学业延期。据测算,2019年我国博士生分流退出人数已上升至0.79万人,而博士生学业延期的人数达到13.67万人。分流退出和学业延期是保障培养质量的有效措施,但如果比例过大,也会过多占用办学资源和增加教育成本。建议严把入口关,坚持分类指导,规范细化培养过程,加强导师队伍建设,加快博士生教育改革发展。     

Opportunities to Explore for Gifted STEM Students in Korea: From Admissions Criteria to Curriculum

The admission process and curriculum for gifted students are crucial because they provide opportunities to explore (OTE) for gifted science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students. Korean specialized STEM schools, science academies (SAs) and science high schools (SHSs), claim that their screening process and curricula are based on their educational philosophy and goals. This article examines how SAs and SHSs make efforts to offer OTE in STEM disciplines by controlling the admission process and curriculum. It is found that SAs have enough flexibility in providing OTE that emphasize creativity. SHSs, however, are limited in providing such OTE and instead value high achievement more.     

论少数民族大学生社会实践机会缺失的原因及对策

社会实践对少数民族大学生在思想道德素质的提高、民族团结意识的增强等方面有重要作用。思想认识上的偏差、交往圈子狭窄、生活习惯不适应、科研能力薄弱是导致少数民族大学生社会实践机会缺失的主要原因。应当通过给予适当政策倾斜、加强民族团结教育和心理健康教育、拓宽实践教育途径、注重项目团队选择和加强实践团队指导等措施促进少数民族大学生参与社会实践活动。     

论民族自治地方服务型政府建设面临的挑战与机遇

服务型政府是当今中国社会一个主流的政治话语、学术话语与公众话语.这话语背后所指向的内容离学术理想和民众的期望却有很大距离,尤其是民族自治地方,政府在管理理念更新、职能转变、组织机构设置、运行机制改革等方面遇到了极大的挑战.然而,民族自治地方有可利用的政治资源优势,如经济社会发展自治权,这为民族自治地方服务型政府建设提供了难得的保障.     

博士生为什么延期?——国外博士生毕业时间影响因素研究

20世纪80年代以来,博士生延期毕业问题已经引起各国高等教育学界的关注。博士生毕业时间的影响因素可归纳为个人先赋性、外部环境、个体自致性三个方面。个人先赋性对博士生毕业时间的影响并不显著;学科文化、导师等大学支持系统、社会就业环境等,会间接影响博士生的毕业时间;博士生的个体自致性特征是影响毕业进程的关键因素。外部环境和个体自致性因素的叠加、消减作用,使博士生毕业时间的影响因素呈现出个性化、动态化和交互性的特点。对其内在机理的深入研究,有助于对博士生进行追踪式的个性化指导。     

企业参与职业教育校企合作的机遇挑战分析

我国职业教育已经进入深化产教融合、全面提升人力资源质量的新时代。参与校企合作的企业可以运用SWOT战略分析工具,作出符合当前客观情形的机遇和挑战分析以选择参与职业教育的方式方法。     

Factors in Decisions of Underrepresented Minorities to Forego Science and Engineering Doctoral Study: A Pilot Study

The research described here comprised a pilot study that attempted to identify the factors in decisions of highly capable students from underrepresented minority groups to forego study for science or engineering doctorates. Underrepresented students are defined as Blacks, Hispanics, and Indians. While these groups will soon comprise 30% or more of the population, they receive only 5% of the S & E (Science and Engineering) doctorates. The research was completed under NSF (National Science Foundation) grant no. REC 9908861. The research built on a previous NSF study (RED-9355867) that identified the most effective colleges and universities in the country in the preparation of Black, Hispanic, and Indian science and engineering students for study toward the PhD degree. One of the major concerns raised during the site visits to the top 10 institutions serving these groups was the loss of capable students to other careers. The study obtained information from minority graduates about factors impacting persistence to graduate studies in science and engineering and solicited suggestions for attracting more people like themselves to S & E doctoral study. Twelve underrepresented minority S & E graduates who decided to forego doctoral study in favor of other pursuits. Themes emerging from these conversations regarding reluctance to pursue advanced study included the following: concern for ability to finance such study; weaknesses in advisement practices and systems; lack of full knowledge, early on, about the rewards of doctoral employment; and concern about opportunities for employment after graduation. Suggestions proffered for attracting more underrepresented minorities to S & E doctoral study included the following: early socialization of youngsters into the world of science and its practice; expanded funding for scholarships and fellowships; expanded outreach by colleges and universities; expanded efforts by churches and community groups and deeper commitments by colleges and universities.     

Reframing Doctoral Programs: A Program of Human Inquiry for Doctoral Students and Faculty Advisors

The Program of Human Inquiry is proposed as a structure to support scholarly inquiry by graduate students and faculty advisors. The Program provides a foundation that acknowledges human experiences and connects them to program aims in ways that do not limit student and faculty options. It promotes communication among student, committee members, and committee chair, as well as dialogue with oneself. It consists of four components. The first component is an acknowledgment of what one brings to graduate studies. The second component includes a Plan of Study, a summary of coursework, field experiences, formal exam dates, and residency. A third component records rigorous, but negotiated, avenues of inquiry including coursework, readings, research, and conferences. Finally, the Program encourages an ongoing discussion of values and recording of appropriate experiences. This proposal will interest students who wish to get the most out of their graduate experience and faculty who desire to continually re-examine their advising, their graduate program, and their own learning.

冲突与调适:全日制教育博士生存现状研究

全日制教育博士是一个新型的群体,特殊的身份使他们面临着多方面的矛盾。应用冲突理论、角色互动模型以及符号互动论为研究工具,用民族志研究方法对L高校的六名全日制教育博士展开研究,发现他们主要面临角色的冲突、学习的压力、生活的矛盾以及未来的迷茫等困境,并就此从制度完善、培养模式等方面提出建议。     

价值观冲突:学校教育面临的挑战与契机

当前,中国正进入社会转型时期。随着社会开放程度的不断加深,文化的交流也空前频繁,而在不同文化的交流与对话中,冲突与对抗也随之产生。价值观是文化的核心,价值观冲突作为一种普遍存在的社会现象,既对学校教育提出了严峻的挑战,也为学校价值观教育带来了发展契机。学校教育应以更加开放、宽容、科学的态度去面对冲突,引导学生形成正确的价值观,进而促进文化认同。

Navigating the Personal Challenges and Sociopolitics of Doctoral Supervision

ABSTRACT

Faculty members are important agents in the socialization of doctoral students into academia, but little training is available in preparation for the role of doctoral supervisor. In this self-study, we consider the personal and sociopolitical challenges that Kevin faced as an early career teacher education faculty member who had just begun supervising doctoral students. Data sources included Kevin’s reflective journal and regular debriefing discussions between Kevin and his critical friend, Tim. Data were analyzed with a focus on identifying turning points in Kevin’s understanding of his practice. This resulted in the construction of three themes related to (a) subjective theories drive doctoral education, (b) working through insecurities and the imposter syndrome, and (c) the sociopolitics of higher education. Results are discussed with reference to the self-study literature and socialization into higher education faculty roles. Recommendations are provided for the preparation of faculty member to fill roles as doctoral supervisors.
