The JISC digital preservation focus and the digital preservation coalition

Collaboration is widely seen as being essential for digital preservation but recognised by practitioners as being often as challenging as addressing digital preservation itself. This paper outlines the programme and activities of the JISC Digital Preservation Focus and the proposed Digital Preservation Coalition and the rationale which has led to these developments to foster collaboration. It will be relevant both to those directly affected by these developments in the UK and to an international audience interested in the general approaches adopted and specific programmes that are being developed.     

From talking to doing: Digital preservation at the British library

What are the core competencies that a national library needs to address the preservation of digital material? What skills are needed, by whom, when, to do what? Are the skills available externally, or is it better to develop people within the library? How are preservation philosophies and IT philosophies attuned? How is the preservation of digital material managed in a matrical and distributed way within a large organisation?

Audience reactions to the use of direct and personal disparaging humor in informative public address

In this study 126 subjects were exposed to one of three versions of a speech on “Effective Listening.” In one version no humor was added to the speech. In the other versions examples of direct and personal self and other‐disparaging humor were included in the presentation. Subjects rated the message and the message source on a number of dependent variables. Data, in general, suggest that those speakers who use direct and personal disparaging humor of any kind are rated as having a better sense of humor than those speakers who use no humor. Further, the use of self‐disparaging humor serves to reduce ratings of expertness while the use of other‐disparaging humor produced lower ratings of character.     

朱熹对古代文献及其传播贡献的研究

朱熹在“文化成天下”思想的指导下,为恢复封建伦理纲常,推行教化,把著书讲学、振兴书院、教育仕子作为一生孜孜以求的奋斗目标。除了大量儒家经典注解之作外,朱熹及其弟子还对古代先贤的著作进行大规模收集、整理和编次。此外,朱熹修建书院,广征书籍,重视出版刻书,不仅促进了南宋学术文化的繁荣和发展,同时也对丰富我国历史文献宝库、保存文化遗产起了积极的作用。     

2000年兼容问题解决思路

阐述了2000年兼容问题的实质以及给经济带来的影响, 提出了几种修改方法, 并指出了解决步骤, 对解决2000年兼容问题具有一定的现实意义。     

Digital preservation and the Cedars project experience

This paper describes the development of a reliable, short questionnaire (PLSQ) to measure student perceptions of and satisfaction with quality of service in an academic library. This formed part of a wider study to evaluate student awareness and use of library services and staff support. This included the simultaneous development of a ‘factual’ questionnaire and two small scale observational studies, backed up with ‘market research‐type’ interviews to evaluate the effectiveness of the ‘help desk’ and ease of use of the computer catalogue. A ‘triangulation’ technique was thus used to provide indirect evidence that the questionnaire was validly measuring user satisfaction. The results from the initial trial of the questionnaire are described and compared with relevant findings from the ‘factual’ questionnaire and the help desk study. Though two samples completed different questionnaires, the frequency results arc either in complete agreement or mutually supportive. The help desk study results are also supportive, again suggesting that the questionnaire is a valid measure. Following statistical analyses, the final sixteen item PLSQ emerged which produces internally consistent responses and which appears to measure satisfaction with staff helpfulness and physical conditions in the library and perceptions of ability to find information and knowledge of CD‐ROM and other services.
