光学绘画的历史迷雾

考察西方绘画的光辉历史，我们发现在文艺复兴前夕发生了一些非常有趣的事情。大致在1425年之前，大多数的绘画都是相当程式化的，甚至只是粗略的。但我们发现，此后的绘画几乎都有如摄影一般地写实。例如，文艺复兴早期绘画大师范艾克(Janvan Eyck)(13907-1441年)的肖像画“阿诺菲尼的婚礼”(Giovanni Atoolfini And His Wife)，

The mathematical and military sciences in Renaissance England

The Renaissance saw the evolution of troop management, fortification and artillery into ‘mathematical’ sciences and those who practiced these tasks into ‘mathematical practitioners’. These terms have been allowed to imply that these areas were deeply theoretical, whereas they varied from theoretical to simply numerical. Gunnery, in particular, tended towards the latter. Practitioners of the simpler mathematics, however, gained by being able to connect their action to the more impressive study of ‘the mathematicks’. Future work must recognize more critically the distinction inherent in the term ‘mathematical’ when applied to the arts of the Renaissance.

Until very recently, Graham Vickery worked for the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development in Paris as Principal Administrator of the Information, Computer and Communications Policy Division. He has long been interested in the innovation policies of the member countries, and has been instrumental in shaping many of them.     

Identification of interdisciplinary ideas

Literature shows interdisciplinary research as an essential driver for innovation. Ideas that are used as a starting point for this research are of an interdisciplinary nature because they combine aspects from different disciplines. The identification of interdisciplinary ideas at an early stage enables the start of interdisciplinary research and thus, it enables advances to be made in the innovation process. We propose a new methodology that combines semantic clustering and classification to estimate the interdisciplinary nature of ideas from a set of given ideas. The set is created automatically by use of an existing idea mining approach. Ideas from this set are semantically clustered to obtain concepts that are latent in the data. The relationship between each concept and each discipline pair from a set of given disciplines is calculated. Based on the degree of relationship, concepts are used to represent the interdisciplinary field spanned by the two disciplines. The ideas standing behind these concepts are identified as interdisciplinary ideas. As a result, the proposed methodology enables an estimation of the interdisciplinary nature of given ideas. The results might be helpful for researchers as well as for decision makers in the field of innovation management.

Sources of ideas for innovation in engineering design

This paper explores the sources of ideas for innovation in engineering design. It shows that engineering designers involved in complex, non-routine design processes rely heavily on face-to-face conversations with other designers for solving problems and developing new innovative ideas. The research is based on a case study and survey of designers from Arup, a leading international engineering consultancy. We examine the role of different mechanisms for learning about new designs, the motivations of designers, problem-solving and limits to designers’ ability to innovate. We explore how the project-based nature of the construction sector shapes the ways in which designers develop new ideas and solve problems. We suggest that among the population of designers in Arup, there are a number of different design strategies for innovating and that these can have important implications for how design is managed. We locate our approach in the research on innovation in project-based firms, outlining patterns of innovation in firms that survive on the basis of their success in winning and managing projects.
