人格建设是教师队伍建设的重要内容

人格素质是教师素质的重要内容。教师人格通过吸引、感染、示范、引导等方式潜移默化地对整个教育行为产生重要影响。现代教育发展对教师人格提出越来越高的要求,目前教师队伍中存在的一些问题反映出进行教师人格建设的迫切性。根据人格内容的特征,应该从教师个体和外部环境两个途径加强教师人格建设。

关于实现湖北经济在中部崛起的思考

文章分析了湖北经济发展的现状:经济发展速度较慢;工业化水平低;城市化水平不高;固定资产投资增长速度较慢;对外开放水平存在较大差距;人民生活水平不高;新经济指数的排名靠后。提出了实现湖北经济在中部崛起的对策:扫除经济实现跨越式发展的意识障碍;推进农业产业化和工业化进程;加快新型工业化步伐;大力推进城市化进程;进一步改善投资环境;大力发展民营经济。     

部分高校"大学化学及实验"开设情况的对比研究

笔者调查了国内部分高校“大学化学及实验”课程的教学基本情况,总结了“大学化学及实验”的教学上的创新和特色,分析了我校基础化学课程中存在的主要问题,这对基础化学课程进行重组设计,从而使之能够更好地适应高等教育改革和发展,培养学生成为具有创新能力的高素质人才,坚持我校“特色加精品”的办学理念,具有十分重要的理论和实践意义。

Preparation never ends: Sustaining a mentorship model in early childhood teacher education

Abstract

This paper documents the development of a mentorship project for both inservice and preservice early childhood teachers. This mentorship model was conceived by university faculty who were concerned that developmentally appropriate practice was fast becoming a casualty of the present accountability reform in education, and distressed by the disconnect between the university and the prek‐grade three classroom. The first two years of the model are described with particular emphasis placed on the second year efforts to increase the interaction of preservice and inservice teachers. Central to these efforts has been the two‐way communication resulting from video mentorship, and this paper documents the reactions of the stakeholders to this initiative. The paper closes by discussing the challenges that lie ahead as the mentorship model continues to evolve.

Exploring a transformative orientation to sustainability in universities: a question of loose and tight framings

This review essay examines three new books on higher education and sustainability. It explores a number of the issues raised in the books, in particular, the meaning of a transformative orientation towards sustainability. The idea of loose and tight conceptual framings of sustainability is employed. A tight framing is where an institution embodies a vision, values and values-informed practices that have been shifted to fit a particular conceptualisation of sustainability which gives meaning, not just to what that institution does, but also to what it is trying to become. A loose framing is where an institution takes sustainability seriously in what it does, without having in place values, dispositions and orientations, and an appropriate conceptually grounded vision. It is argued (i) that the essential distinction here is between that of doing sustainability, and a shift to being sustainable as a whole institution; (ii) that any developmental journey to a tight framing would need to be a deliberate one; (iii) that changes to curriculum, management, leadership and governance would need to be in place before this can start; and (iv) that an important step on the journey will involve institution-wide deliberations on the conceptual framing(s) to adopt.     

Adding up or Down: A Discussion

ABSTRACT

Increased access to algebra was a focal point of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel's 2008 report on improving mathematics learning in the United States. Past research found positive effects for early access to algebra, but the focus on average effects may mask important variation across student subgroups. The author addresses whether these positive effects hold up when the analysis is expanded to examine effect heterogeneity. Using a nationally representative sample of eighth-grade students in 1988, the author examined sensitivity of findings to methods for selection bias adjustment, heterogeneity across the propensity to take algebra in Grade 8, and across schools. The findings support past research regarding positive benefits to Grade 8 algebra and are consistent with policies that increase access to algebra in middle school.
