The potential value of investigation of the γ-ray content of cosmic radiation has long been recognized, but evaluation of measurements made with high-flying balloons is difficult because of the generation of secondary γ-rays in the atmosphere above the detector. The availability of artificial satellites has eliminated this difficulty, and this article reviews current ideas in this field of cosmic ray research in the light of results obtained with satellites OSO III, SAS II, and Cos B. 相似文献

Gamma photon by gamma photon, throughout almost seven years of perfect operation the European satellite COS-B has produced what amounts to a high-energy chart of the sky: this gives a totally new view of the Milky Way, our Galaxy. COS-B discovered new stars, extraordinarily intense sources of gamma radiation, most of which are invisible at other wavelengths.
