Social Gerontology—Integrative and Territorial Aspects: A Citation Analysis of Subject Scatter and Database Coverage

To determine the mix of resources used in social gerontology research, a citation analysis was conducted. A representative sample of citations was selected from three prominent gerontology journals and information was added to determine subject scatter and database coverage for the cited materials. Results indicate that a significant portion of gerontology research, even from a social science perspective, relies roughly equally on medical resources as it does social science resources. Furthermore, there is a small but defined core of literature constituting scholarly “territory” unique to gerontology. Analysis of database indexing indicated that broad, interdisciplinary databases provide more comprehensive coverage of the cited materials than do subject-specific databases.

“Ebooks for the Classroom+” at University of South Florida Libraries: A Case Study of Database Management

The University of South Florida Libraries has supported a campus-wide “Textbook Affordability Project” initiative by creating and maintaining an ebooks database called “Ebooks for the Classroom+.” This database facilitates faculty members’ adoption of ebooks as textbooks through library acquisitions in the hope that students can achieve academic success without paying for expensive textbooks. It is built and run by the library, using data based on vendor-supplied information. This paper discusses the approaches, the challenges, and the future plans for building and updating the database.     

Analysis and Inspiration of Foreign Database Publishers＇ Mobile Services

调研国外20家数据库出版商的移动服务方案,从其服务形式、获取方式、权限及支持平台、开发模式、推广方式、用户评价几个方面进行分析,发现：目前国外数据库出版商在移动APP应用的开发上表现出较好的势头;在APP内容上,电子书、期刊类应用占绝大多数,且用户对移动APP的接受程度较高,但专业类应用仍有待开发;在平台开发上自主意识较强,但服务推广方式总体效果一般。在此基础上,提出图书馆应当加强移动APP的开发,在开发模式上增强自主意识,并加强与技术提供商及数据库商的合作,同时加大对移动服务的推广。

The effect of the Copyright Revision Act on a large academic Reserve Rending Room's service to users, budget expenditures, and office procedures is described. How the library dealt with the key areas of "fair use" and the "spirit and intent" of the Law are discussed. Some solutions, such as purchasing back issues, reprints or additional copies of books, and more fully taking advantage of the Universal Serials and Book Exchange, are discussed. Issues regarding the Copyright Law and Reserve Rooms that need resolution are suggested.     

Full-Text Database Dependency: An Emerging Trend Among Undergraduate Library Users?

The ever-growing number of full-text electronic databases and their increasing availability has helped to create greater expectations among the undergraduate students who use them in their research. A study was made of nearly three hundred students enrolled in composition classes to determine the indexes and databases most commonly used for assignments and whether having the full text of journal articles online played a role in shaping the nature of their research. The survey results confirmed the authors' belief from encounters at the reference desk that students are becoming dependent on the availability of full-text databases and are using them in some cases to the exclusion of all other information sources.     

Will Library E-Books Help Solve the Textbook Affordability Issue? Using Textbook Adoption Lists to Target Collection Development

In response to rising textbook costs, many have urged adoption of open educational resources (OER) for students. However, library-owned e-books also provide free access to students, without the potential disadvantages of OER. In this study the authors explore the suitability of e-books as textbooks by examining the social sciences textbook list in Fall 2017 at Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU). Overall, 18% of the textbooks were available as a multi-user format and this rate increased with course level. Despite their limited availability, multi-user e-books provide a free, convenient option for students, and they may play a role in the textbook affordability solution.     

A Case of TMI (Too Much Information): Improving the Usability of the Library's Website through the Implementation of LibAnswers and the A–Z Database List (LibGuides v2)

ABSTRACT

The Michigan State University (MSU) Libraries' Website has a case of TMI: too much information organized by librarians for librarians. Finding relevant information about various library services, including the 24/7 Distance Learning Support Line, and access points to scholarly resources is often cumbersome, and given the limited time and staffing available in Web Services, it was impractical to embark on a comprehensive Website redesign. Instead, the implementation of two systems, LibAnswers and the A–Z Database List in LibGuides v2 CMS, served as a means for addressing the TMI issue and improving the usability of the MSU Libraries' Website. This case study will map the MSU Libraries' experience of implementing the LibAnswers and the A–Z Database List from early vision to launching the end product, as a means for resolving the “too much information” issue and improving the usability of the library's Website.
