This study purported to identify major factors which influence perseverance in studies at a distance teaching university with an open admission policy. The results indicate that: students who study in organised groups and get weekly tutorials have a higher perseverance rate as compared to students who study in the regular framework which provides tutorials every three weeks; veteran students have a greater chance to complete courses successfully as compared to novice students; and the success rate in liberal arts and social science courses is considerably higher as compared to natural science and mathematics courses. On the other hand, the factors of age, sex and previous level of education do not have an impact on perseverance and success in studies.  相似文献

The paper describes methodology developed at the Open University to overcome problems of programme evaluation in distance learning systems. Emphasis is placed upon the techniques of contextual evaluation, in which a selection of programmes is examined as representative of the course as a whole. The study Investigated the association between entry qualifications to a BEd course, performance in educational psychology and overall BEd performance. The roles of main area specialisation and sex differences In performance In educational psychology were also investigated. The academic records of 313 students from six year‐groups constituted the data set for the study. Results showed that performance in educational psychology was an efficient predictor of overall performance in the BEd course. Students who specialised in mathematics/science subjects performed better as a group in educational psychology than students in other main areas of specialisation. Also, significant sex differences in performance in educational psychology were observed in some of the year‐groups, with female students out‐performing their male colleagues.  相似文献

Monitoring of student progress on the Dip H.E. at Bradford and Ilkley College has focussed upon the problems associated with such pressures. The undergraduate course Educational Gerontology taught at Hampton University includes the development and implementation of a community conference for older adults. The conference is developed in conjunction with the local senior center. Students spend two hours each week throughout the semester observing and participating in the programming at the senior center in order to become familiar with the needs and interests of older adults. During scheduled class times, students select an appropriate conference theme and begin conference plans and committee assignments. The class culminates with the conducting of the conference at the center. Such a project gives students the opportunity to get valuable hands‐on experience in educational gerontology programming.  相似文献

This article describes the change of the Open University of the United Kingdom during the 1990‐1993 period from being a domestic to an international organization, with the expansion of its provision throughout the whole of the European Union and a range of other European countries, including Austria, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Switzerland. As a case study, it raises issues about the development of universities from the unique organizations which they have been in European society to international organizations which understand their roles in business terms, and suggests that distance teaching universities, because of their industrialized nature and volume of activity, may become leading examples of this trend.  相似文献

In the globalization scenarios we currently face, educational systems are challenged by different and sometimes competing pressures and requests. These call for a deep transformation of the organization, role, and social function of educational systems. Within this context, the very concept of education has come to be understood in different ways, which sometimes distort its moral and social value. In this essay, Maura Striano contends that from a Deweyan perspective, educational transformation must be seen as strictly connected to social change, and education should be understood as a process that facilitates and supports social growth and development. In order to be effective and fruitful, Striano suggests, this transformation must occur from the inside of educational systems and can only be brought about by reflective and inquiry‐based inner processes if it is to have a sound moral and social impact within the changing framework of the globalized world.

A survey was carried out among all ex‐B.Ed. (Hons) students who are currently teaching in Maltese state primary and secondary schools to investigate the relevance and interest of the topics covered in the educational psychology and human development area of the course. Using a postal questionnaire, 183 respondents (55 per cent of the population) rated each of 45 topics on a five‐point scale in terms of interest and relevance. The t‐test analyses revealed statistical significance in the difference between the mean interest and relevance ratings for the majority of the topics. The relevance of each topic for the primary and the secondary school teacher was also investigated; in only 9 topics was the difference in the ratings for relevance statistically significant. The implications of the findings for the revision of the syllabus are outlined.  相似文献
