The Dynamics of Violence and Homelessness Among Young Families

Violence is one of the most prevalent elements in the lives of homeless families with young children. This violence may come in various forms: domestic violence, street violence, violence in one’s childhood, witnessing violence, and other avenues and modes. Violence disrupts the normal bonding between parent and child. It isolates and degrades families. Early childhood professionals can support parents and children who are victims of violence through support, education, and nurturance.     

Life in the Village: Teacher Community and Autonomy in an Early Childhood Education Center

This article presents findings from a qualitative case study of a public early childhood education center whose motto, the familiar African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child,” reflects the emphasis given to teacher community in the official school discourse. The meanings teachers gave to professional community were investigated. Interviews and observations were conducted at the school over a period of 12 months. Data analysis revealed an inherent tension between community ethos and personal autonomy. These findings suggest that professional teaching community is complex and contradictory, and that explicitly addressing the tension between community and autonomy would enhance teacher education and professional development.

制定幼儿教师教育标准是幼儿教师教育的基础性工作。美国全国幼儿教育协会制定了幼儿职业准备标准,提出了“促进幼儿发展与学习”、“构建同家庭、社区的关系”、“对支持幼儿及其家庭的措施进行观察、建立档案、开展评估”、“开展教与学的活动的知识和能力”、“成为一名专业人士”等五项幼儿教师教育的核心标准,还提出了范围广泛的普通知识教育标准。为了适应我国幼儿教育发展的需要,我国应尽快制定专门的幼儿教师教育标准,美国幼儿教师教育标准为我们提供了镜鉴。     

The Efficacy of Personal Learning Plans in Early Childhood Teacher Preparation

The purpose of this paper is to present data demonstrating the potential efficacy of Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) as an instructional tool in early childhood teacher preparation. One hundred and thirty-nine undergraduate students enrolled in an introductory course offered within a unified early childhood education program over a period of four years completed preliminary and final surveys including items on student background, efficacy of course methods, and student learning style and outcomes. Data related to the PLP and other, more didactic, methods used in the target course are presented. A general conclusion that can be drawn from these data is that students believed the PLP method to be no less effective than other methods relative to some indicators and significantly more effective than other methods relative to other indicators. Results are discussed in terms of self-efficacy theory.

早期教育对贫困家庭儿童发展的影响研究

以贫困家庭和普通家庭儿童为研究对象,通过教育实验系统观察贫困家庭儿童在不同教育情境下的身心发展状态,检验早期教育对贫困家庭儿童发展的积极作用。结果表明:家庭是儿童早期发展的重要影响源,适宜的早期教育能够有效促进贫困家庭儿童神经心理、社会适应能力和行为与情绪的发展,早期教育对儿童体格发育和感觉统合失调的影响并不显著。     

流浪儿童的性格与行为特点研究

本研究以235名男生（其中流浪儿童75名，流动儿童88名，处境正常儿童72名）为被试，采用问卷法，通过流浪儿童与流动儿童及处境正常儿童在性格和行为各重要指标上的比较来分析流浪儿童的性格和行为特点。结果表明：（1）与流动儿童及处境正常儿童相比，流浪儿童的自控能力、自我概念水平较低，享乐取向和潜在犯罪倾向较高，更倾向于外部归因；（2）流浪儿童的依赖、焦虑、退缩、冲动、夸大等行为更多，更具攻击倾向。     

Sanmao, the Vagrant: Homeless Children of Yesterday and Today

The intensifying globalization has made street survival more brutal and miserable for homeless children, especially in Third World countries. Sanmao, the Vagrant is a wordless picture book which tells of the adventures of a boy named Sanmao in streets of Shanghai during WWII. The essay analyzes how the artist’s ingenious visual narrative authentically anticipates the omnipresent impact of globalization on innocent children. Sanmao’s survival totally relies on his resilience and proactivity. He falls prey to unbridled exploitation and coercive and abusive treatment. Originally a comic intended for adults, the book is the artist’s furious protest against the indifferent attitude of the adult world.

Child Care and Early Education: Satisfaction with Services Among Rural Families

Parents were surveyed regarding their satisfaction with early childhood services. Participants were 65 families who had at least 1 child younger than 5 years of age enrolled in a child care center or an early education program in a rural county; a majority of respondents were single, African American females with annual incomes below $20,000. Parents responded to the 20 items of the questionnaire on a 5-point Likert scale ranging from strongly disagree (1) to strongly agree (5). The average score for overall level of satisfaction was 4.64 for the child care group and 4.37 for the early education group; the average for individual items ranged from a low of 3.85 to a high of 4.64. Differences between child care centers and early education programs were not statistically significant. Applications, implications, and recommendations for early childhood services are discussed.     

Teacher candidates' transformative thinking on issues of social justice

This article examined how teacher candidates' thoughts shifted regarding social inequity in a sophomore-level Foundations of Education course located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States. First, we described in detail the teacher education program and course, as well as class simulations, school observations, course readings and class discussions. Then, we examined the narratives of our teacher candidates' transformation. We found that the afore-mentioned experiences successfully supported transformative thinking regarding social justice. By the end of the course, many teacher candidates began to take ownership over their learning and started viewing themselves as responsible change agents. They began to examine education as embedded in larger social contexts, scrutinized their own schooling experiences and stepped outside of their own conceptions of education to initiate discussions of social justice.

自美国幼儿教师培养伊始,其价值取向经历了四种不同的价值取向流变:其一,"福禄培尔主义"技能取向,主张在"福禄培尔主义"影响下,幼儿教师培养需侧重技能;其二,科学主义实证取向,认为在科学主义思潮下,幼儿教师培养需建立在心理学基础上学习多种知识,并懂得实证研究方法 ;其三,人文主义人本取向,关注在人文主义主题下,幼儿教师培养之根本在于成人的过程,关怀幼儿教师个体价值;其四,二元价值观融合的专业取向,强调科学主义与人文主义融合趋势下,幼儿教师培养需符合专业要求,并能促进儿童的学习与发展。     

美国幼儿教师教育的普通知识标准

美国幼儿教育协会制订早期儿童教育专业的准备标准，提出了各个层次从业者的培养要求。就早期儿童教育专业候选者所需要的普通知识的准备而言，该组织提出了语言和读写能力、艺术、数学、身体锻炼和体育、科学、社会研究等领域的培养要求，可以为我国幼儿教师教育的课程改革提供借鉴。     

流浪儿童救助保护中科学化、人性化与法制化的统一

流浪儿童救助保护工作是我国救助管理工作的重要组成部分，但是《救助管理办法》不仅可操作性不强，而且缺乏对流浪儿童救助管理的特殊规定。这就要求我们在现有法律的框架下，科学分析流浪儿童的各方面情况，大胆探索，勇于创新，全面开创流浪儿童救助保护工作的新局面，做到流浪儿童救助保护科学化、人性化和法制化的统一。     

俄罗斯无人照管和无家可归儿童的社会关怀理念与政策分析

解决无人照管和无家可归儿童问题是俄罗斯社会工作的重点和难点。俄罗斯在对无人照管和无家可归儿童实施社会关怀时，坚持人道主义理念，力求解决平等问题。为此，制定了一系列政策，并取得了一些成效。     

Applied Theater and Mixed-Status Families: A Collaborative Self-Study with Teacher Education Candidates

ABSTRACT

In this article, we narrate a self-study that emerged through a collaborative, arts-based inquiry around Latinx diversity, especially those arising from citizenship status at the individual and family level. Coming from distinct professional educational landscapes (theatre/drama education, middle/secondary education, and elementary education), we worked inter-disciplinarily to orchestrate a series of workshops for a cohort of elementary teacher education candidates. Our specific focus was rooted in the meanings that applied theatre teaching strategies suggested for us as teacher educators and for the teacher candidates we prepare to teach in schools. We also sought implications that might cultivate broader critical discourses within and across teacher education about diversity. Our blending of self-study with arts-based pedagogies was a purposeful effort to expand our students’ and our own professional subjectivities by disrupting xenophobic and racialized public discourse about national borders using play-based strategies to foster risk and generativity.     

Ten Years of Teacher Workshops in an Environmental Problem-Solving Model: Teacher Implementation and Perceptions

Abstract

In this study, the authors focus on quantitative and qualitative methods to examine the training model for Investigating and Evaluating Environmental Issues and Actions (IEEIA). The authors examined (a) the relationship between IEEIA implementation rates and type of training; (b) workshop participants' perceptions of support for their use of IEEIA and the relationship between those perceptions and implementation; and (c) workshop participants' perceptions about the impact of the instructional approach on themselves, students, administrators, colleagues, parents, and the community. A direct-mailed questionnaire was used to collect data from 132 teachers who had participated in IEEIA training between 1990 and 1999. Interviews were conducted with a purposive sample of 8 workshop participants. More than half of the teachers used the approach. Participants of extended or multiple trainings tended to use IEEIA more than their counterparts. Support after the workshop was important to implementation; IEEIA teachers perceived that it had positive impacts on themselves, students, and others.     

Teacher and Student Perceptions of the International Baccalaureate Program

Abstract

This study examined the perceptions of teachers and students during the first year of implementation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program at a high school. The research team interviewed all IB teachers and students regarding their decision to teach/enroll in IB; how IB differed from teaching/taking regular courses; and other facets related to the Program. IB faculty and students perceived the Program positively, believing it challenged them to be better teachers and higher achieving students. The study also cited the increased workload of teaching/taking IB courses and its impact. Policy recommendations are offered for schools utilizing the IB for the first time, and guidance is provided to parents regarding the suitability of IB as an option for gifted students.

全美幼儿教育协会的幼儿教师教育标准是对幼儿教师总体素养的规范和要求。本文从该标准的内容出发,分析全美幼儿教育协会的幼儿教师教育标准的特点,认为该标准具有广泛的实用性、实质的可操作性、鲜明的服务性。最后提出了对我国的幼儿教师教育标准的启示,注重增强我国幼儿教师对自身职业的意识性,注重我国幼儿教师观察、记录和评价幼儿的能力,注重提高我国幼儿教师与幼儿家庭、社区联系的紧密性。     

Rough and Tumble Play: An Investigation of the Perceptions of Educators and Young Children

This research investigated rough and tumble (R&T) play in two early childhood settings. Participants included 11 educators and 17 children (5 years old). The study focused on gaining an understanding of how early childhood educators and young children interpret R&T play. The results indicate that while there is perceived value in R&T related to the development of young children, educators are uncertain of how to manage the play. The results of this study demonstrate the need for early childhood programs to develop policies to guide how R&T is managed.
