A Plasma-arc pyrolysis system for hazardous waste treatment

Alaboratory system for the treatment of medical and hazardous wastes via AC plasma-arc pyrolysis was recently built up by a research team led by Prof. SHENG Hongzhi at the CAS Institute of Mechanics （IMECH） in Beijing.     

Progress in Diffraction Enhanced Imaging

In cooperation with the Topography Station of Beijing Synchrotron Radiation under CAS Institute of High Energy Physics, a research group from the CAS Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) has made encouraging progress in the diffraction enhanced imaging technology through phase-contrast microscope by hard X-rays.     

Exploring the limits in microgravity

The opportunity to carry out experiments in the absence of gravity has always interested CAS scientists. Studies have been implemented via, for instance, Russian Mir Space Station and China＇s space flights ever since the establishment of the National Microgravity Laboratory （NML） at the CAS Institute of Mechanics （IMECI-I） in the late 1990s. In addition to the concern about the effects of the weightlessness on humans sent into space, they are also interested in its effects on the reproductive and developmental cycles of plants and animals as well as other physical and chemical phenomena.

joint Lab of Archimede Bridge to be Established

An agreement on setting up a Sino-Italian Joint Lab of Archimede Bridge was signed by Director of the CAS Institute of Mechanics Hong Youshi and General Manager of the Archimede Bridge Co. Elio Matacena on Dec. 6 in Beijing. Italian Minister of Foreign Trade Antonio Marzano and Director of CAS Bureau of Basic Science Zhang Jie were among the officials witnessing the event.     

A novel laser beam generator in place at SGll

Researchers with the State Key Laboratory of High Field Laser Physics, the CAS Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, have been successful in developing a multifunctional and high-energy laser beam system (also known as the ninth laser beam) at the Shenguang-II Laser Facility (SGII).     

China's first ultracold atoms on a chip

Scientists with the CAS Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics (SIOM) announced on 26 Nov., 2008 the successful development of China's first atom-chip system for achieving Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC),a milestone progress     

基于关联规则挖掘的研发团队识别方法研究

针对当前单个人才引进不能很好地满足企业、行业和区域日益升级的人才需求问题,探寻一种新的方法来识别某一机构的核心研发团队,从而为企业、行业和区域批量引进人才提供决策支持.由于传统共现分析方法存在缺陷,研究引入并优化关联规则挖掘中的FP-Growth算法来实现核心研发团队的识别,并以中国科学院长春光学精密机械与物理研究所为对象验证方法的有效性,最后以中国科学院为研究对象进行实证研究.实证研究挖掘得到中科院7支核心研发团队,包括中科院海洋研究所的海洋生物制品课题组等.     

CAS announces new academicians

Twenty-nine prominent Chinese scientists have been elected as CAS Members and five of their colleagues from US, France and Russia as CAS Foreign Members in 2007. The announcement was made by CAS Vice President LI Jinghai at a press conference held on 27 December, 2007 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the meeting.     

CAS forum for young scientists held in Yunnan

Co-organized by the CAS Graduate University （GUCAS） and the CAS Kunming Branch, 2007 Sciencel00, a CAS annual forum for outstanding young scientists, was opened on 28 November, 2007 at the CAS Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden （XTBG）, with an attendance of more than 90 experts and scholars from various CAS affiliates.     

CAS Invites International Panel to Evaluate Its Institute

At the invitation of the CAS, a group of eight international experts convened in Nanjing on October 7th and 8th to evaluate the CAS Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology (NIGPAS). This is the first move of its kind ever made by CAS at the academy level. Earlier this year several CAS institutes had made similar assessments by themselves.     

To serve and promote science development via innovation

CAS should stick to the principle of rendering service to, and giving impetus for, the development of China＇s science enterprise by making S＆T innovations, said CAS President LU Yongxiang. The CAS president made the remarks in a recent talk to communicate the gist of the winter session of the Party＇s Leading-member Group at CAS, which was held from 7 to 11 January in Beijing.

CAS Announces Academicians Elected in 2009

Thirty five Chinese scientists and six of their colleagues from Canada, France and the United States were elected into CAS in 2009. The announcement was made by CAS President LU Yongxiang at a press conference held on December 4, 2009, in Beijing. CAS Vice President LI Jinghai read the list of the new Members.     

Recent CAS Achievements in Life Sciences

Maiden voyage of a novel research ship

Shiyan-1, a new research vessel of CAS, recently accomplished its first official journey in South China Sea. CAS leaders, including CAS President LU Yongxiang and CAS Vice President JIANG Mianheng, were present at the ceremony marking its maiden voyage held on 9 May in Sanya City, south China＇s Hainan Province.     

Lu Yongxiang Meets Visiting DFG President

CAS formally became a member of the Association of Academies of Sciences in Asia (AASA) at the fourth general assembly of AASA from Sept. 23 to 25 in Tehran, Iran. A CAS delegation headed by Vice-President Yang Bailing attended the conference.     

Basic Research Objectives Reaffirmed

As a national institution for scientific research and a component of the national innovation system, CAS should and must make key contributions to the great national rejuvenation of the country. Keeping this in mind, CAS has developed four developmental targets for its basic research. This was revealed at a CAS conference on basic research held June 11-12 in Beijing.     

The 10th Session of the Fourth CAS Presidium Held in Beijing

Chaired by Prof. LuYongxiang, executive chairman of the CAS Presidium and president of CAS, the 10th session of the fourth CAS Presidium was held on September 2 in Beijing. The CAS Presidium is the standing leading body of the CAS General Assembly, the highest organ of the CAS Academic Divisions (CASAD).     

CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction Established

The opening ceremony for the newly established CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction was held on Nov. 10 at the CAS Center for Space Science and Applied Research. CAS Vice President Jiang Mianheng and Vice Minister of the State Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense,Luan Enjie, officiated at the ceremony.
