Imagining: Creating Spaces for Indigenous Ontologies

For at least half a century, catalogers have struggled with how to catalog and classify Native American and Indigenous peoples materials in library, archive, and museum collections. Understanding how colonialism works can help those in the field of knowledge organization appreciate the power dynamics embedded in the marginalization of Native American and Indigenous peoples materials through standardization, misnaming, and other practices. The decolonizing methodology of imagining provides one way that knowledge organization practitioners and theorists can acknowledge and discern the possibilities of Indigenous community-based approaches to the development of alternative information structures.     

Why Isn’t Health a Priority?

This study helps bridge the existing divide between the knowledge on health news reporting in mainstream mass media and health reporting in media outlets serving Native American populations in the United States. The current work presents the first survey of journalists working in Native-serving media outlets to identify role conceptions, perceived importance, and actual practices of health reporting. Aided in data collection by the Native American Journalists Association, findings indicate journalists (N?=?100) place a high value on their role as disseminators of culturally relevant health information. However, results conflict in regard to the prioritization of health news reporting. Although journalists recognize health news should be a top priority, they point to a general lack of will from news leadership to make it an organizational priority. Additionally, results show that although journalists have comfort and confidence in health-related reporting, access to qualified sources remains an area for opportunity.     

There Is No View From Nowhere: User Experience Research at the Center of Southwest Studies Library

ABSTRACT

In the fall semester of 2016, Delaney Southwest Research Library at Fort Lewis College researched user experience, particularly of Native American undergraduate students. Results showed that Native American students were more concerned about appropriate terminology, representative content, and effective organization of the library than non-Native students were. This research will help the library improve services through collection evaluation, shelf rearrangement, library instruction, and, potentially, reclassification of Native American materials to improve browsability, house culturally sensitive material respectfully, and increase user satisfaction with our special collections.     

基于主题词表的政务领域本体构建

针对我国政府信息资源管理和利用中存在的很多信息资源分散、缺乏必要的分类和整合等问题,在基于《综合电子政务主题词表》（试用本）范畴表的基础上,利用protégé本体开发工具,以政务领域的子领域“软件”为例说明如何基于主题词表进行政务领域本体的构建,并通过建立公理库来对本体库进行知识的一致性检查和蕴含知识的本体推理。     

叙词表、元数据与本体之间关系探究

本文首先分析了本体与叙词表之间的关系，并就二者转化相关问题展开探讨。接着，深入研究了本体与元数据的互补关系，并以实例来说明。在此基础上，本文提出了一个整合本体、叙词表与元数据各方优势的知识组织系统。     

叙词表国际标准的修订及其对基于知识组织的术语服务的影响

叙词表国际标准在修订过程中,新增大量与基于知识组织的术语服务相关的内容。通过对这些标准技术内容的深入剖析,结合基于知识组织的术语服务现状,探讨叙词表的最新修订对基于知识组织的术语服务未来发展的影响。这些影响体现为三个方面:推动基于知识组织的术语服务的规范化发展,促进术语集在基于知识组织的术语服务中的应用,促进基于知识组织的术语服务与术语工作的协调发展。     

《汉语主题词表》与英文超级科技词表概念映射构架设计

在网络时代,知识组织体系映射有利于实现信息的集成检索与获取。文章设计了《汉语主题词表》（工程技术版）与英文超级科技词表的概念映射模型,包括中文与英文词表的概念语义映射方法、概念映射数据描述、机器辅助和最短距离映射规则等,并讨论了中英文双语检索模型的应用前景。同时,基于英文超级科技词表的概念关系网络及其中文规范译名,提出了《汉语主题词表》扩充和完善的方法,从而更好地实现中英文概念映射,使英文超级科技词表在知识检索和知识发现中发挥更大的作用。

This paper examines the terminology introduced in the Third Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-111) of the American Psychiatric Association in relation to the thesaurus terms available in Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) and The Thesaurus of Psychological Index Terms.     

Connecting Cline Library with Tribal Communities: A Case Study

ABSTRACT

One of the six strategic planning goals of Northern Arizona University (NAU) is to strengthen its relationship with Native Americans and to become one of the nation's leading universities serving Native American students. Considering its close geographic proximity to several tribal communities—particularly the Navajo Nation, which represents 44% of Native American Students at NAU—several programmatic and collection management activities have been instituted at the university's Cline Library as a response to this broader university goal. The library's outreach efforts, though, extend beyond the university's Native American student population and include activities designed to collaborate with tribal communities in a more direct and inclusive manner. Furthermore, incorporating concepts of critical librarianship into the library's teaching, learning, and public programming helps provide a progressive theoretical framework for improving relationships between the university and Native American communities. This case study provides an overview of existing programmatic and policy-based initiatives at the library and discusses where improvements could be made to help foster a closer and more meaningful relationship with Native American students, faculty, and patrons.     

中文信息自动分类用知识库的设计与构建

在计算机智能处理技术远未成熟的情况下 ,基于概念语义网络的自动分类采用知识库技术 ,仍将是一种实用的选择。本项研究根据分类语言、主题语言、自然语言三者兼容互换的原理 ,以众多标引员的主题标引和分类标引的经验 ,即文献数据库实体中大量存在的文献分类号和主题词双重标引数据为基础 ,建立一个以《中图法》为基础的的分类知识库———分类法与主题词表对照数据库。论文对构建分类知识库的思路、步骤及主要技术 ,包括关联度测度方案、标引词模式匹配、新词增补等进行了讨论     

《汉语主题词表》XML文档的自动生成研究

《汉语主题词表》XML文档的实现对于提高词表的利用效率具有重要意义。在详细分析《汉语主题词表》各数据表之间逻辑关系基础上,利用JDOM技术实现《汉语主题词表》XML文档的自动生成。     

Communication anxiety and teacher communication competence among Native American and Caucasian students

This study compared self‐reported communication anxiety and student perceived teacher communication competence among fifth and sixth grade Native American and Caucasian students being taught by Caucasian teachers. A survey of 67 Native American and 51 Caucasian students was conducted in an elementary school located on a Northwestern reservation. Native American and Caucasian students differed significantly only on their communication anxiety associated with approaching new people. No significant difference was found on factors of communication anxiety more specific to classroom communication. Native American students perceived the teachers to have significantly less communication competence. Additionally for Native American students, perceived teacher communication competence predicted reported enjoyment of classroom communication, fear of classroom communication and willingness to approach new people. For Caucasian students perceived teacher communication competence only predicted willingness to approach new people.

叙词表词汇转换系统的设计

本文在借鉴国外叙词表转换系统研制方法(集成词表)的基础上,以《汉语主题词表》、《社会科学检索词表》和《经济学管理学论文题录索引词汇表》三种汉语叙词表为实验样本,结合我国叙词表的特点,以金融银行学科为例,用计算机程序设计了一个实验性的叙词表词汇转换系统。实验表明该系统的词汇转换率达到78％—87％。     

网络时代《中国分类主题词表》的发展与应用

论述《中国分类主题词表》电子版的研制概况和设计思想,指出其电子版不仅可应用于文献信息资源的网络标引,实现分类主题一体化标引和检索,而且可作为文献信息资源网络检索的电子工具。此外,《中国分类主题词表》电子版在概念关系处理与自然语言处理方面有了新的进展;其远程网络管理系统的开发将是实现联机动态修订维护的基础。     

一种新型知识组织系统——思维导图可视化词典

本文简要介绍了思维导图可视化词典及其特点、原理和功用，并作出进一步分析和评价，指出它对知识的组织表现方式及构建思想值得借鉴和参考。     

叙词表互操作技术研究——教育集成词库的试验

目前,国内外信息领域都在致力于情报检索语言的互操作研究.介绍了基于词表结构的自动匹配和基于同义词表的语词匹配两种互操作技术.以教育类数据为例,选取了<中国分类主题词表>、<教育主题词表>、<社会科学检索词表>等叙词表,采用构建集成词库的方法实现不同叙词表间的兼容.     

语义Web环境下知识组织体系SKOS应用研究

According to the problem of no unified standard existed in the transformation from thesaurus to ontology, this paper introduces the knowledge organization system SKOS recommended by W3C as a standard in the transformation. Then the paper introduces the common labels of SKOS Core Vocabulary, transforms and expresses the paragraphs chosen from EI by using SKOS Core Thesaurus. The authors also discuss the combined application of SKOS with other knowledge organization systems and point out that SKOS should work out more practical standards for semantic Web.     

分类主题词表的计算机自动编制——兼论用于自动分类的知识库的改进

认为中文文献数据库中存在大量的分类号与关键词(或主题词)对应的人工标引记录。通过对这些标引记录信息进行聚合处理,可以实现计算机自动编制分类主题词表。比较两种分类主题词表的编制模式,讨论机编分类主题词表的优势,针对机编分类主题词表已有的成果——知识库的不足之处提出改进方案。改进方案在小规模测试集中取得了良好的效果。最后分析将机编分类主题词表技术应用于新一代《中国分类主题词表》升级改造的良好前景。     

Centering Indigenous Knowledge: Three Southwestern Tribal College and University Library Collections

ABSTRACT

At tribal colleges and universities, libraries are challenged to serve Indigenous communities while supporting Western formal education. In this article, we examine three tribal higher education institutions in the southwestern United States: Diné College, the Institute of American Indian Arts, and Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute. In examining the collections and their use at these libraries, we find multiple strategies to “center” Indigenous knowledge despite most materials being written by and for non-Natives. We hope the strategies present here can inspire people at libraries of all types to consider ways to include the diverse perspectives of their own communities.
