This article explores the concept of academic receivership in U.S. colleges and universities. Academic receivership occurs
when control of an academic department or program is removed from the faculty and an outside chair is put in place by the
college or university administration. A literature review is supplemented by a small survey to assess how common receivership
is and how it is administered. Combined, these elements allow for a discussion of the warning signs that a department is becoming
dysfunctional and a procedure to guide a department through the receivership process.

In 1997 a medium-size Midwestern public university in the U.S. initiated a first year experience program. The program is designed
to infuse added curricular and extracurricular components into core courses in an effort to integrate students into the university
community. This article examined the FYE impact on grade point average (GPA) and retention after 1 year for the fall 2006
cohort of entering students. The findings suggest no positive FYE effect on retention, but on average FYE students earned
higher GPAs than non-FYE students. Reducing the sample to include only courses identified as goal compatible FYE courses yielded
a positive effect on retention and also accentuated the GPA differential. The estimated positive FYE impact on retention was
larger for below average students (especially females) and smaller for above average students.

School education in Germany is under the responsibility of the federal states and as a consequence average grades differ widely
across regions. Since school leavers apply nationwide for admission to university, regional provenance may thus matter a lot
for the success probability in the admission process. Using a comprehensive dataset of the German central clearing house for
university admissions in 2006/2007, we show that success rates indeed differ dramatically between federal states, provided
that grades are not made comparable across state boundaries. Most of the variation in success can be explained by state-level
differences in grading. By defining quotas for federal states and restricting competition among applicants to the state-level,
the link between state-level grading and success rates in the university admission process can be broken.

It is a widely accepted maxim that, like business generally, higher education is globalising. For many countries, higher education
is now an important export sector, with university campuses attracting international students from around the world. Licensing
production, in the form of franchising degree provision to international partners, is beginning to mutate into foreign direct
investment as many universities set up campuses in other countries. While there are clearly parallels between the globalisation
of business and higher education, this paper examines the supply- and demand-side drivers within the university sector. It
argues that an alignment of special factors, rather than an inexorable trend towards commercialisation, has caused the recent
internationalisation of higher education and concludes that current trends are unsustainable in the medium-term.

Elementary teachers are typically hesitant to teach science. While a limited knowledge of science content is a reason for
this, limited science pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) has emerged as another reason in recent research. This study constitutes
two case studies of a professional development program for elementary teachers involving mentoring by a university professor.
The mentor took the role of a critical friend in joint planning and teaching of science. The study examines the nature of
the mentoring relationship and reports the type of teacher learning that occurred, with a particular focus on the teachers’
development of science PCK.

Since many teachers and students recognize other kinds of knowledge (faith) based on other ways of knowing, consideration
of these realities is appropriate for the science education community. Understanding the multitude of ways that clergy view
relationships between science and faith (i.e. alternative ways of knowing) would assist in understanding various ways that
people address complex issues arising from ideas about science and faith. We administered a questionnaire composed of multiple-choice
and short answer items to 63 United Methodist ministers. Findings included (1) that formal, organized faith contexts (e.g.
church services) serve as informal science education opportunities, (2) participants demonstrated considerable diversity regarding
the types of relationships developed between science and faith, and (3) participants recognized a need exists for better understandings
of science and its relationship to faith for them, their colleagues, and their congregations.

This paper traces the genesis of the MIT OpenCourseWare project from its initial strategic precursors in 1999 and 2000, through
its launch in 2001 and its subsequent evolution. The story told here illuminates the interplay among institutional leadership,
and strategic planning, and with university culture in launching major educational technology enterprises. It also shows how
initiatives can evolve in unexpected ways, and can even surpass their initial goals. The paper concludes with an overview
of challenges facing OpenCourseWare in moving from the end of its production ramp-up and towards sustainability.

Physics education reform movements should pay attention to feminist analyses of gender in the culture of physics for two reasons.
One reason is that feminist analyses contribute to an understanding of a ‘chilly climate’ women encounter in many physics
university departments. Another reason is that feminist analyses reveal that certain styles of doing science are predominant
in the culture of physics. I introduce recent philosophical work in social epistemology to argue that the predominance of
certain styles of doing science is not good for science. Scientific communities would benefit from greater diversity in styles
of doing science.

In the context of increasing support for interdisciplinary modes of research, many in the policy, scientific, and academic
communities propose that universities should change structurally to reduce the barriers to investigation that involves researchers
from multiple disciplines. This paper examines ‘interdisciplinary strategies’ in U.S. research universities—deliberate efforts
to spur collaborative research across traditional departmental and disciplinary boundaries, including the creation and adaptation
of university policies, practices, and structures. It identifies and analyzes the use of incentive grants to initiate new
interdisciplinary units, the establishment of ‘campus-wide institutes’ that steer campus investments in interdisciplinary
areas, and new modes of faculty hiring and evaluation. Illustrative examples are provided, and the implications of these strategies
are discussed.

Faculty and student engagement in the Argentine grassroots rebellion: toward a democratic and emancipatory vision of the university 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Following Argentina’s economic collapse of December 2001, the authors examine the engagement of university faculty and students
in various grassroots movements. Based on a qualitative study involving 24 formal structured interviews, 18 informal interviews,
observation-based field work, and document analysis, the authors identify key forms of faculty and student engagement as well
as the manner in which individuals discussed the relationship between universities and society. Findings are used to advance
the idea of a more democratic and emancipatory vision of the contemporary university and build on the work of Boaventura de
Sousa Santos. Throughout the article, the authors ground their discussion in international/comparative literature addressing
globalization, neoliberalism, university reform, and social movements.

This paper focuses on teaching and learning the set of real numbers R and its completeness property at the university level. It studies, in particular, the opportunities for understanding this
property that students are offered in four undergraduate correlative courses in Calculus and Analysis. The theoretical framework
used in the study draws on concepts developed in the Anthropological Theory of Didactics, especially the notions of praxeology

In this paper, the influence of personal networks and social support on study attainment of students in university education
is examined. Furthermore, the paper aimed at clarifying the possible mediating role of achievement motivation, time spent
on studying and working, procrastination and self-esteem. The study is a follow-up of the ’89 cohort study, but is restricted
to those students who have transferred to university education after finishing secondary education. The students have been
approached with a questionnaire in 2004. Multinomial logistic regression shows that social support has no effect on study
attainment, but that personal networks do have an effect on attainment. The relationship between social support and personal
networks on the one hand and study progress on the other hand is not mediated by the before mentioned variables.

This article examines why an initially successful innovative pedagogical practice was not sustained. The innovative practice
was a computer-mediated activity known as Fifth Dimension (5D) within a collaborative project between a university and a local
elementary school. The analysis identifies conflicts and transitional actions which prevented participants from continuing
the 5D and yet reveal that the 5D had an impact on the participants’ dominant activities. The analysis provides grounds for
rethinking the sustainability of innovations in school as a process of interplay between dominant and non-dominant activities
which includes conflicts and almost unnoticeable transitional actions.

Institutional change includes the supplanting of the old model of production with a new one, the elimination of old markets
and the emergence of new ones. As higher education around the world shifts from national markets to an integrated transnational
market, and possibly toward a virtual market, Christian higher education, like other market sectors, will have the opportunity
to redefine its market niche. Emerging opportunities linked to new institutional rules will challenge higher education in
ways that may not yet be obvious to its present managers and faculties. How the university in its portfolio of options might
negotiate the elimination of old markets and the creation of new markets is the subject of this essay. A general set of principles
and recommendations is offered.
