MPS/CAS Partner Group on Nanotechnology in Catalysis

The first contact between Bao Xinhe and the Fritz Haber Institute (FHI) of the Max Planck Society goes back to 1989, when he was a Humboldt Scholarship holder in Germany. He worked at the FHI with Gerard Ertl on the surface and catalytic properties of Ag-cluster until 1995, when he returned to China and joined the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics (DICP) under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The cooperation with the FHI continued in 2000, when a Partner Group was established under the leadership of Robert Schlogl and Bao Xinhe.     

MPS／CAS Cooperation on Solid State Chemistry

The cooperation between Zhao Jingtai and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids was initiated immediately after the research field Inorganic Chemistry (headed by Rudiger Kniep) started its work in Dresden. The first contact was established when Zhao Jingtai came from the Xiamen University as a Max Planck fellow. At that time, the chemistry of the intermetallic compounds of rare-earth metals was chosen as a topic of joint investigations with Yuri Grin. Later, the solid state chemistry of the borophosphates was added to the program of concerted research in the group of Zhao Jingtai and the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids. The cooperation was intensified after the move of Zhao Jingtai to the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics and the establishment of an Inorganic Materials Chemistry and Physics Group there. The results of the investigations performed from 1999 to 2003 were published in more than 25 scientific papers and more than ten contributions to scientific conferences.     

Fostering New Talents and Networks(1995 until today)

The year 1995 marked a decisive change in the nature of the collaboration. A Beamline with Double Crystal Monochromator in Middle X-ray Range

The beamline 3B3 with a double crystal monochromator in the middle X-ray range has been successfully constructed at the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF) under the CAS Institute of High Energy Physics. It was checked and accepted by a panel of experts on April 4 in Beijing.     

Learn from Each Other in Friendship and Trust ——An Interview with Prof. Herbert Jackle, Vice President of MPG

On Jan 23 rd , 2013, Prof. Dr. Herbert J ckle, Vice- President of the Max Planck Society (MPG) and a world- renowned expert in molecular developmental biology, was honoured with the CAS Award for International Scientific Cooperation of 2012 due to his devotion to the cooperation between CAS and MPG. He shared the Award together with Prof. C. N. R. Rao from India and Prof. G. A. Zherebtsov from Russia. Prof. J ckle has endeavoured to integrate a Max Planck model of management with the scientific research system of CAS in his catalytic efforts to establish and operate the CAS-MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology (PICB) in Shanghai. In an interview with BCAS reporter SONG Jianlan, he is invited to recall his experiences in cooperation with CAS and share with us his thoughts. Early involvement: Munich of September 2004 saw Prof. J ckle in an MPG-CAS talk aimed at setting up a "Max Planck Institute" beyond territories of Germany, which is now known as the CAS- MPG Partner Institute for Computational Biology (PICB).     

MPG, CAS Set Up a New Partner Group

Max Planck Society (MPG) and CAS re- cently set up a Part- ner Group on First-Principles Theory of High-pressure Oxidation Catalysis at the CAS Dalian Insti- tute of Chemical Physics (DICP). UV Raman Spectroscopic Studies on Catalytic Materials

Due to their excellent work on UV Raman spectroscopic studies on catalytic materials, a team of scientists led by CAS Member Prof. LICan at the Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics （DICP）, CAS were awarded with a Second-Prize from the 2011 State natural Science Award. The team has long devoted themselves to the research on catalytic materials, and has helped solve some long-standing difficulties in this field, including the characterization of catalyst activity and studies into synthesis mechanisms of catalytic materials.     

Newly Appointed CAS Vice Presidents

Shi Erwei, a research professor, was born in June 1955 in Shanghai. In 1982,Shi graduated from the Department of Chemistry of the Wuzhou Branch School of Jiangxi Normal College. From 1982 to 1985, he taught chemistry at Wuzhou Normal College in Jiangxi Province. In 1985,he was admitted to the postgraduate program of the Shanghai Institute of Ceramics under CAS(SICCAS), where he obtained his master‘s degree in 1988 and his Ph.     

MPS/CAS Partner Group on Geometric Analysis

The Partner Group works on topics in geometric analysis in cooperation with the corresponding research group at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences in Leipzig. The partnership is based on several years of collaboration between several research groups in China (the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Peking University, Fudan University, Wuhan University) and the group of Jurgen Jost in Leipzig. The group plays a pivotal role in the systematic advanced training of a whole generation of Chinese mathematicians. A particular focus is on variational problems from quantum field and superstring theories.     

Bringing Home the Graduate Courses

From June 17 to 21, Prof. Zhao Wei, Associate Vice-President for Research at Texas A&M University and a fellow of IEEE, opened a graduate course on realtime systems, not in America, but in a classroom at the Institute of Computing Technology under the CAS in Beijing, China. As chairman of a volunteer committee, he is promoting and operating the Dragon Star Program (DSP) to help China im prove its graduate education in Computer Science and Engineering.
