1 The inaugural Olympic Cultural Festival opened on Sept. 21 at the Millennium Monument, where 2,008 children used red scarves and paintings to form a huge 2008 Olympic emblem. The festival, which lasted through Sept. 30, featured exhibitions of the Olympic emblems and posters and a series of mass activities in the Chinese capital city.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) lavished praise on the progress Beijing had made in the first year after the Chinese capital was awarded the 2008 Olympic Games.The IOC s Coordination Commission had its first full meeting with the Beijing Organizing Committee (BOCOG) on December 2-4, 2002, listening to BOCOG's progress report on construction, sport, Olympic Village and services, environment, communication, marketing, accommodation and technology. The Coordination Commission also visited the city's light railway, the fourth- and fifth-ring roads, and the Olympic Green.

Chinese Olympic organizations and athletes will be either granted preferential taxpolicies or be totally exempt from paying tax at the 2008 Beijing Games,the Ministryof Finance,the State Administration of Taxation(SAT)and the General Administrationof Customs have announced. On Aug. 3, as the evening sky darkened to match the deep blue roof tiles of the landmark Hall of Prayers for Good Harvests, kung-fu movie star Jackie Chan and Chinese women's table tennis champion Deng Yaping carried an ornate golden box to the white steps outside the hall.Chinese parliament chief Wu Bangguo and IOC Coordination Commission chairman Hein Verbruggen removed a jade seal and stamped the emblem in red ink on piece of paper.The unveiling of the official emblem for the 2008 Olympic Games was put on in the presence of 2,008 ViPs and to an audience of 400 million TV viewers at a spectacular show that was broadcast live. The Beijing Games organizers say the emblem had passed six stages of design and modification to be what it is.
