Maiden voyage of a novel research ship

Shiyan-1, a new research vessel of CAS, recently accomplished its first official journey in South China Sea. CAS leaders, including CAS President LU Yongxiang and CAS Vice President JIANG Mianheng, were present at the ceremony marking its maiden voyage held on 9 May in Sanya City, south China＇s Hainan Province.

CAS Announces Academicians Elected in 2009

Thirty five Chinese scientists and six of their colleagues from Canada, France and the United States were elected into CAS in 2009. The announcement was made by CAS President LU Yongxiang at a press conference held on December 4, 2009, in Beijing. CAS Vice President LI Jinghai read the list of the new Members.

CAS, Shanghai, Pasteur to Jointly Set Up a New Institute

An agreement for jointly establishing the CAS Institut Pasteur of Shanghai was signed on August 30 in east China‘s Shanghai Municipality. Representatives from the collaborative partners,including Shanghai Vice Mayor Yan Junqi, CAS Vice President Chen Zhu and President of Institut Pasteur Philippe Kourilsky witnessed the signing ceremony.     

National Grid Operation Center Opens in Beijing

On Dec. 21, 2005, Chinese Minister of Science and Technology XU Guanhua, CAS Vice President SHI Erwei and Chief Scientific Advisor of the UK Government Sir David King unveiled the nameplate for the China National Grid Operation Center at the CAS Computer Network Information Center in Beijing.     

CAS announces new academicians

Twenty-nine prominent Chinese scientists have been elected as CAS Members and five of their colleagues from US, France and Russia as CAS Foreign Members in 2007. The announcement was made by CAS Vice President LI Jinghai at a press conference held on 27 December, 2007 in Beijing. CAS President LU Yongxiang was present at the meeting.     

China＇s Remote Sensing from a Global View--An Interview with CAS Member Prof. GUO Huadong

CAS Announces Its Action Plan for Revitalizing Northeast China

A conference of the CAS leading group for the revitalization of northeast China with science and technology was held on Sept. 1 and 2 in Changchun, capital of northeast China‘s Jilin Province. Chaired by CAS Vice President Shi Erwei, the meeting focused on the implementation of a CAS action plan for retrieving China‘s northeast, an old industrial base and once the industrialization locomotive of the country.     

Render S&T Support to Tibet

CAS President Lu Yongxiang and CAS Vice President Chen Yiyu paid a visit to Tibet from July 10 to 17. They exchanged ideas with leaders of the region on S&T cooperation between the two sides and the establishment of a CAS institute of the QinghaiTibet Plateau research.     

Chinese TWAS Members meet in Beijing

The Fifth Meeting of Chinese Members of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) was held in Beijing on April 16. Chaired by CAS Vice President and TWAS Member ZHANG Yaping, the meeting was attended by nearly 60 people from across the country.

Support Quake Rescue Operation with Remote Sensing Technology

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit Lushan County of Ya＇an in south China＇s Sichuan Province at 08：02 Beijing Time on April 20, 2013. With a solid foundation of science and technology and a lofty sense of mission, the newly established CAS Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth （RADI） rapidly started its emergency response system with remote sensing technology and built up a space-air-ground ＂sky-eye＂ system for the disaster monitoring. Its remote sensing airplane took off to conduct disaster monitoring tasks only 108 minutes after the earthquake.     

CAS launches center for theoretical physics of mega-scientific facilities

The nameplate for the Theoretical Physics Research Center for Large Science Facilities was unveiled on 6 September at the CAS Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) in Beijing. Chaired by IHEP Vice Director WANG Yifang, the ceremony was attended by CAS Executive Vice President BAI Chunli, Vice President of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) SHEN Wenqing and nearly 20 CAS Members.     

CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction Established

The opening ceremony for the newly established CAS Center for Space Environment Research and Prediction was held on Nov. 10 at the CAS Center for Space Science and Applied Research. CAS Vice President Jiang Mianheng and Vice Minister of the State Commission of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense,Luan Enjie, officiated at the ceremony.     

China＇s Satellite Data Network Extends to the South China Sea

Sanya Satellite Data Receiving Station hosted by the Institute of Remote Sensing and Digital Earth （RADI） under the Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS） was inaugurated and formally put into operation on the afternoon of May 24, enabling China to directly obtain land observing satellite data about the South China Sea.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences （CAS） was founded on 1 November, 1949, one month after the establishment of New China. Over the past six decades, CAS has established itself as China＇s top academic institution in natural science, the country＇s most comprehensive R＆D center in natural science and high-technology, and the nation＇s highest advisory body in science and technology. The following is a review of CAS development over the past 60 years in various aspects ranging from research into basic sciences, the environment and natural resources, life sciences and high-technology, to talent training, activities of Academic Divisions and international cooperation.
