On the Declining Interest in Physics among Students—From the perspective of teachers

This study examines physics teachers’ views on factors that contribute to the declining interest in physics among school students. A total of 190 physics teachers from 91 secondary schools and nine junior colleges in Singapore participated in this study, which used a survey instrument to seek their views. Rasch analysis was used to analyze the data. The findings showed that teachers are uncertain about the career prospects of physics graduates and are not very optimistic about the market demand for physics graduates. They feel that physics seems to be difficult and abstract to students. The perception that physics is for boys seems to be rooted in society. The teachers emphasized the importance of co‐curricular activities and laboratory work to enhance interest of students in learning physics. We provide several recommendations to arrest the declining interest in physics at the school level.

Feminine Consciousness—From the perspective of Gender Markedness

Some researches have been conducted concerning the Markedness Theory about the marked and the unmarked, from aspects of Phonetics, Grammar, Pragmatic, Psycholinguistic and Sociolinguistic. Few researches have combined the Markedness Theory with literature theories and even no research has been done to study the Feminism Theory from the perspective of the Markedness Theory. This paper discusses markedness theory with regard to two basic issues: Why it is ok to say"历史"in Chinese, but the equivalent in English is"history", not"*herstory". Why the meaning of"governor"and"governess"is distinctively different? No research concerning the issues from the perspective of markedness has been conducted yet. The cultural differences and translation of the phrases between Chinese and English

Translating methods are undoubtedly the core problems we are confronted with in translation. Because of the difference of geography, history, religious belief, life custom, the phrase of English and Chinese have different national cultural characteristics and the cultural information, they are connected with the cultural tradition closely ,and inalienable. Therefore, in the phrase translation, the translator must understand culture manifests of the different national society in the language, correctly understand the cultural semantics in the phrase, use the suitable translation method. If the original translation language element is consistent with the culture in the translation, we may use the coordinated literal translation, an image usage, similar method and so on.

From the Didactic to the Dialectic—Intercultural Exchanges in Contemporary Counsellor Education

Within the context of the growing development of intercultural counsellor education, the question of how different cultures reconceptualize and transform Western counselling theories for their own context is an important one. In this intercultural exchange in education, concepts such as ‘globalization’, ‘indigenization’ and ‘universalization’ have an impact on the education process. This paper briefly explores these terms and movements and then highlights findings from a research project that took place with a group of counselling graduates in Hong Kong examining how they undertook the processes of reconceptualization and transformation. The dialogical process involved in that enabled participants and researcher to co-explore the process of knowledge development within the counselling education field. Implications for counsellor education are highlighted.

Language teacher education in Finland and the cultural dimension of foreign language teaching – a student teacher perspective

The increasing importance attributed to the cultural dimension of FL education has entailed new demands for teachers and teacher educators. This paper explores the cultural agenda in Finnish language teacher education from a student teacher perspective. The focus is on the students' perceptions regarding how effectively cultural aspects are dealt with in their training, and how these perceptions may be affected by the length of time they have spent abroad. The empirical evidence suggests that both the language studies and the pedagogical studies tend to address cultural aspects to a small or very small extent. The main emphasis is placed on traditional aspects of culture, such as literature and Realia knowledge, and strategies for teaching language seem to overshadow strategies for teaching language and culture in an integrated way. Interestingly, the students' perceptions seem to vary depending on the extent to which they have experienced first‐hand contacts with other cultures.

Mencius is composed of many long dialogues between Mencius and the kings,and some famous statements to show his viewpoints.There are many culture-loaded terms in this work which could reflect the Chinese traditional culture at that time.This thesis makes a comparative study on the application of domestication and foreignization in the translation of Ecological Culture-loaded Terms of two English versions of Mencius.And through this comparative study,this thesis would make its contribution on how to choose the appropriate translation strategy when dealing with such Culture-loaded Terms.     

Macbeth's Tragic Fate in Macbeth——From the Angle of Freud's Personality Theory

In Macbeth, the vivid mental portray and the ups and downs of the plot show us the process of Macbeth's changing from a national hero to a regicide traitor. As a meritorious general for counterinsurgency, Macbeth's lust for power is ever expanding. The personality of id, ego and superego fight with each other repeatedly, making Macbeth lose the control of personality, and finally leading him to a dead end. This paper analyzes the process of Macbeth's personality transformation from the angle of Freud's personality theory, so as to explore how the desire for power makes Macbeth lose his mind gradually and ultimately get self-destructed.     

Student persistence in distance education: a cross‐cultural multi‐institutional perspective

Following the 12th World Conference of ICDE (Vancouver, 1982) the author was invited to coordinate a project aimed at opcrationalizing a research methodology that was discussed during the conference. The essence of the proposed methodology (Taylor and White, 1983) was to conduct essentially the same empirical study in a variety of distance education settings. It was thought that such an approach could engender an objective synthesis of research results that might lead to a significant contribution being made to the empirical basis for distance education.

It was agreed that the study should focus on something of practical importance to distance educators. It was further agreed that the study could not be of too specialised a theoretical nature because of the need to involve a number of institutions across a wide range of cultural settings. It was finally agreed that the study should take a lead from Rekkedal's (1973) study on turn‐around time.

Major contributions to this first ICDE International Research Project were made by L.J. Barker and V.J. White (Darling Downs IAE, Australia), G. Gillard (University of the South Pacific, Fiji), D. Kaufman (Open Learning Institute, Canada), A.N. Khan (Allama Iqbal Open University, Pakistan), R. Factors influencing the take-up of physics within second-level education in Ireland—the teachers’ perspective

There has been a disturbing decline in the take-up of physics within second-level education in Ireland since the early nineties. Here, an analysis is presented of the main factors influencing the take-up of physics from the perspective of secondary school teachers. The database underpinning the analysis is based on a comprehensive survey of teacher opinion in Irish schools conducted in December 2004. The sample included all such schools in Ireland and was directed at school principals, senior cycle physics teachers, and junior cycle science teachers. The data reveal that most senior cycle physics teachers in Ireland do not possess a ‘physics-dominated’ primary degree, are dissatisfied with the technical back-up available to them and their students, consider that many of their students lack the basic mathematical skills needed for physics, believe their students are not adequately informed about career opportunities in physics, and feel students are disadvantaged in regard to grade points in the leaving certificate examination compared with most other subjects. These findings echo those of a previous report by the Government Task Force on the Physical Sciences and lend renewed urgency to the necessity of implementing a comprehensive action programme to reverse the decline in physics take-up before it impacts negatively on the Irish economy.     

Study of Three rules of Skopostheorie in Translating Scientific Texts——Based on the translation of Pictures of the Future

This thesis is based on the translation of scientific texts taken from Pictures of the Future. The characteristics and understanding of the scientific texts causes many difficulties to the translation. Guided by skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the author studies the application of three rules of Skopostheorie in translating scientific texts by taking typical examples from his own translation project. This translational experience is expected to shed much light on the translation of similar text types in future.
