Strength in Numbers: A Model for Undergraduate Research Training and Education in the Social and Behavioral Sciences

This study describes a new approach to undergraduate science training that offers an alternate model to the national objective of scaling up scientific research interests and capabilities among undergraduate students. With this new focus, we seek to more effectively bring scientific research methods and experiences to larger numbers of students in non-elite educational circumstances. Our model has been designed and implemented, at the John Jay College and the Borough of Manhattan Community College, both of which are part of the City University of New York (CUNY), where we have a majority non-White and economically disadvantaged student body. We have successfully engaged large numbers of undergraduate students by linking multiple classes in the social and behavioral sciences to build collective cross-disciplinary research projects that give every enrolled student an opportunity to receive high-quality research training and create cumulative data sets over years that are cumulative, collaborative, and of professional value.     

Geriatric Field Education in Social Work: A Model for Practice

It is expected that the demand for gerontological social workers will increase as the elderly population continues to grow. However, many practitioners enter the aging field with little or no formal training. Successful gerontological social work practice requires workers to be knowledgeable and technically competent. Fieldwork plays a critical role in social work students' development and training. This paper describes a specialized social work practicum which instructs graduate social work students in the skills and abilities required to work in contemporary geriatric practice. The setting for the internship, its format, its major goals, and student experiences are described.     

英国医学院校社会和行为学科教育的现状和未来

在英国,大多数医学院校均为医学生开设了社会和行为科学课程,但是,怎样限定核心内容,以及怎样同预期的学习成果联系起来,仍然是一个有待解决的问题。本文根据问卷调查和研讨会讨论,论述了英国医学院校社会和行为学科教育的现状、问题和未来方向,例如医学课程中社会和行为科学的程度和范围、内容、同一性等。

The Uses and Misuses of 'Alienation' in the Social Sciences and Education

Despite the ambiguities, even contradictions, that surround the term 'alienation' it has been much used and found useful, particularly at certain times. This paper provides a brief history and analysis of the term, exploring both its attractions to some, and the suspicions of others. The way in which the term is used and misused in educational research, and the ways in which the concepts which the term suggest could be developed, are also explored.     

社会科学的自主性与开放社会科学──从《研究与反思》谈起

当代中国社会科学自主性的存在和发展,既要借鉴西方社会科学实证主义的传统,确立具有科学性和规范性的学术运作方式,又要吸收当代西方社会科学对传统社会科学的重思和否思的成果,避免"现代性"的后果,建立具有本上意识和特色并能与西方社会科学发展进行平等对话和交流的开放社会科学。没有脱离社会、政治、经济和文化场域而独立存在的社会科学场域,任何从一极走向另一极的文化霸权都不能替代真正的学术交流和实践。     

哲学人文社会科学对素质教育的作用

通过教育促进人的素质全面发展构成科教兴国的一个直接目标。哲学社会科学对素质教育的作用表现为四个方面：主导思想道德素质、促进文化科学素质、影响身体心理素质、渗透艺术审美素质。     

Field Instruction in Social Work Education

Recent trends and issues related to values, ethics, research, classroom-field integration, field assignments, part-time education and student stress in social work field instruction are discussed in conjunction with the Council on Social Work Education Curriculum Policy Statement. Changes in educational demands and student characteristics are taken into account when exploring the issues. Research conducted by the author is used to illustrate the conceptual manual.

Strength and Motivation: What College Athletes Bring to Social Work

College athletes develop many strengths and skills during their athletic career, such as dedication, ability to work across cultures, leadership, and community building. Social workers need many of these same skills. This study explores the potential transfer of skills from athletics to social work among 15 former college athlete MSW students. Qualitative interviews asked about transferability of skills developed as college athletes to social work practice. Participants identified both interpersonal and intrapersonal skills gained in their athletic career that were of use in social work practice. Implications for both athletic career development and social work recruitment and education are discussed.
