<正>The Chinese New Year parade isn’t the only place to watch a lion dance in the San Francisco Bay Area. At weddings, grand openings of new businesses and other celebrations, the traditional Chinese art is performed year-round, thanks to the efforts of lion dance groups and young people increasingly embracing the activity.     

The role of Chinese culture in dance

China is a nation with many different nationalities. Each has its own history, language and tradition, and maintains its own distinct customs and style of dress. In China, as in other countries, there is evidence that some kind of dramatic art existed during the earliest periods. Chinese dance dates back to nearly 5,000 years. In order to understand Chinese drama, we must first try to find out what their dramatists are trying to do and inquiry into the early origin of drama in China. This paper will introduce three area of discussion that involves drama and dance. They are （1） the historical tale where mythological stories are portrayed in dances, （2） the traditional dances, and （3） a specific development of drama and dance called Peking opera.

Using improvisational exercises in general education to advance creativity,inventiveness and innovation

Creativity is the process of generating something new or original that has value to an individual, a group, an organization, an industry or a society. Improvisational theater techniques are used to enhance creative thinking and action in a variety of disciplines as broad as education, theater, dance, painting, writing and music, law, business, and most recently, entrepreneurship. This paper describes an academic setting that draws upon the definition, techniques and improvisational methods as prerequisites for a progression of increased experiences of idea generation, new product invention and innovation. Improvisation is used as a critical ingredient to enhance creativity for undergraduate liberal arts students in a freshman general studies course leading to student product development and field-based innovations.

A high-dexterity low-degree-of-freedom hybrid manipulator structure for robotic lion dance

Lion dance is a very popular and lively Chinese traditional art form. A robotic project in Singapore has been dedicated to the design and demonstration for similar traditional art forms using modern mechatronics technology. This paper deals with a novel six-degree-of-freedom （6-DOF） hybrid manipulator with high stiffness, high loading capability and high dexterity, mimicking the lion dancer＇s upper body motions along with the lion head movements. The design of the hybrid manipulator consists of a 2-DOF torso structure in serial configuration and a 4-DOF dual arm structure in parallel configuration. The combined 6-DOF hybrid manipulator can support the weight and dynamics of the lion head during the lion dance performance. Forward kinematics of the manipulator has been formulated and visualized for design purposes. Inverse kinematics of the hybrid manipulator were analytically derived for real-time motion control. Based on the design and modeling, a complete hybrid manipulator has been fabricated, implemented into the robotic lion, and successfully demonstrated for real robotic lion dance performance.
