Decisions in resource management: The case of microforms

This study examines management of microforms at libraries and institutions maintaining an active interest in their own microform collections, defined for the purpose of this study as those not only holding, but still acquiring microforms. Survey results presented here, which identify factors that contribute to retention and discard decisions – including holdings of the same content in different formats – are considered in the context of decision theory. Findings could inform current and future decisions relating to the microforms discussed here as well as to holdings in formats dependent on other technologies that will eventually change.     

Collecting retrospective materials from developing nations: A cooperative approach through microforms

For building foreign area study collections, cooperative projects offer a cost-effective means to provide microform access to retrospective materials, yet they pose unique problems of funding, acquisitions, and decision-making. The article examines four cooperative microform projects administered by The Center for Research Libraries, focusing on their creation and governance, policies and procedures for identifying, acquiring, and lending materials, and assessing their future prospects in an economic climate which pits national scholarly concerns against felt local needs.     

Describing Anything That Walks

ABSTRACT

Anchored on the Vietnamese American Project (VAP), this essay presents the documentation of the Vietnamese American Experience through the voices of ethnic Vietnamese in Orange County, California, home to the largest concentration of this ethnic group outside Vietnam. Groundbreaking in its approach and method, VAP is an open forum that enables community assessment, self education, public memory preservation, and the first step toward understanding Vietnamese America and the Vietnamese diaspora. The cross-sectional narratives encompass transcontinental accounts of first and 1.5 generations of Vietnamese refugees and their children, and subsequently focus on their coming to terms with their second home in America, dwelling on how ethnic Vietnamese have negotiated with political turmoil, socioeconomic changes, and cultural identity. The paper, as the VAP, bridges cultural and linguistic barriers, connecting the native land and the adopted country. In short, the paper through its synthesis of the VAP: (1) gives a timely response to the urgent needs to understand and study the ethnic Vietnamese community in Orange County, providing much-needed primary data on the respective population for the ethnic communities and interdisciplinary scholarship; (2) serves as a healing process for members of the Vietnamese American community in Orange County and other victims of war; (3) sheds light onto intra- and inter-ethnic relations, fostering community consolidation, forging cross-cultural collaborations, and nurturing racial harmony; (4) contributes to an important period in American history with perspectives that are lacking in the extant literature; and (5) will conduce peace by bringing out the human experience in America's longest war.     

428种科技期刊开本及幅面尺寸现状调查

GB/T78887<图书和杂志开本及幅面尺寸>规定,787mm×1092mm纸张的开本(188mm×260mm)可作为过渡,沿用到2000年但要逐步淘汰;而经修订的自2000年5月1日起实施的GB/T7881999[1]已取消了这种非标准开本,规定图书杂志A4开本的公称尺寸为210mm×297mm.为了了解科技期刊开本及所用幅面尺寸的现状,笔者对此进行了调查.     

Dinosaurs in a Jetson world: A dozen ways to revitalize your microforms collection

Microforms collections are at a crossroads and how effective libraries are in increasing the visibility and usability of these collections will determine whether they endure. In the last decade many libraries have made significant changes in how they process, catalog, and provide access to their traditional book and journal collections, even in how they view their library's physical spaces and the role of library services in providing support for their collections. This article will suggest changes libraries will need to make if they expect to mainstream the most useful and valuable parts of their microforms collections by applying some of the same innovative and change-oriented approaches they have used in other areas of their libraries.

A system for the publication of biomedical journals in multiple formats

This article outlines a system developed by Oxford University Press for the publication, in print and multiple electronic formats, of the Journal Nucleic Acids Research. It describes how procedures have been developed to provide a single production process from which print, CD-ROM and online editions can be produced. Usage analysis data for the first year of publication of the online edition are presented. Extension of the system to other biomedical journals is also briefly discussed.     

Copyright protection for materials in electronic formats: the CITED solution

A way allowing access to electronically stored copyright material under controlled conditions is described—the CITED solution. The system monitors the use of the store and permits the downloading of copies of documents to authorized users.

Mixing floating- and fixed-point formats for neural network learning on neuroprocessors

We examine the efficient implementation of back-propagation (BP) type algorithms on TO [3], a vector processor with a fixed-point engine, designed for neural network simulation. Using Matrix Back Propagation (MBP) [2]we achieve an asymptotically optimal performance on TO (about 0.8 GOPS) for both forward and backward phases, which is not possible with the standard on-line BP algorithm. We use a mixture of fixed- and floating-point operations in order to guarantee both high efficiency and fast convergence. Though the most expensive computations are implemented in fixed-point, we achieve a rate of convergence that is comparable to the floating-point version. The time taken for conversion between fixed- and floating-point is also shown to be reasonably low.
