Taking on Revised Anglo-American Cataloging Rules

Abstract

Implementation of the proposed revisions to AACR2 will bring changes to our libraries in both technical and public services. This article identifies some of those changes and poses several questions which may need to be addressed in the implementation process. A brief proposal for dealing with training issues is also given.     

Strategies for Cataloging Historical Serials

The challenges the cataloger of historical serials faces are many and they come from all aspects of the cataloging process. For those who primarily catalog contemporary materials, these issues can be particularly daunting. The object of this article is to examine some of the more commonly experienced issues with emphasis on how to address them in a practical sense. The article is organized by broad functional categories: types of material, iterations, bibliographic data, and name authority control.     

E-Journal Cataloging in an Age of Alternatives: A Survey of Academic Libraries

This article reports on a survey of U.S. academic libraries that was conducted in the spring of 2008 to determine if and how academic libraries were actively cataloging e-journals in the age of the OpenURL, A–Z journal lists, and the batch loading of purchased MARC records.     

When Good Enough Is Not Good Enough: Resolving Cataloging Issues for High Density Storage

This article identifies issues with cataloging backlogs and quality control, particularly relating to the subsequent ingest of content into library high density storage. Results of a pilot project at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are used to demonstrate the high cost of retroactively addressing cataloging concerns, and how not addressing them contributes to issues in discovery and access. Changes in local cataloging standards, and criteria for how to assess a cost/benefit ratio for quality cataloging are also discussed.     

Cooperative Remote Storage: Challenges for Resource Sharing

Cooperative storage involves two or more libraries sharing space within a facility. Kansas State University leases space at the Library Annex, a remote storage facility owned and operated by the University of Kansas. Various challenges are involved in maintaining access to remotely stored materials for resource sharing and document delivery purposes. The authors, staff members of the Interlibrary Services Unit at Kansas State University, discuss variables affecting access to remote materials and share their experience working within a cooperative storage model.     

Cataloging from the Center: Improving e-Book Cataloging on a Consortial Level

In 2014, the Ohio Library and Information Network (OhioLINK) overhauled its consortial cataloging workflows by switching to what has been termed a model of “cataloging from the center.” For more than 20 years, the Ohio academic library consortium relied on volunteers from its member institutions to catalog consortially purchased materials. Consolidating the consortial cataloging into the OhioLINK office allowed for revising the various workflows. Since 2014, the cataloging workflows for these shared electronic resources have improved efficiencies, allowing records to be provided to members in a more timely manner.     

A New Cataloging Curriculum in a Time of Innovation: Exploring a Modular Approach to Online Delivery

Cataloging librarianship has a tradition of innovation. Currently, professional and instructional innovations must be considered in a new Cataloging curriculum. Using as a framework Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation, this reflective study explores one solution being considered at the University of Missouri while revising the Cataloging curriculum. A balance between theory and practice is suggested through the establishment of a set of core theoretical topics to be covered in the first part of the Cataloging class; Web-based modular elements to be covered in the second part will focus on cataloging practice in specific kinds of libraries.

The Dark Side of Collection Management: Deselecting Serials from a Research Library's Storage Facility Using WorldCat Collection Analysis

To address the situation of its nearly full storage facility, the Purdue University Libraries developed guidelines for the deselection of very low–use serial titles and conducted a pilot project to identify material for withdrawal. The library school intern hired to conduct the pilot used WorldCat Collection Analysis to create subject lists of titles to be considered for withdrawal. These lists also contained value-added information about how many benchmark institutions owned and duplicated the local holdings of each title. Working with subject specialists, the intern developed criteria to guide a major serials deselection project. After the success of the internship in six subject areas, the libraries funded a longer-term position to complete the deselection project.

Development of a Model for Cataloging,Circulation, and Housing CD-ROMs

As more and more incoming freshmen arrive on campus with computers equipped with CD-ROM drives, faculty incorporate data from CD-ROM products into assignments, and library materials arrive accompanied by software on CD-ROM, librarians need a model for cataloging, circulating, and shelving these materials. This article offers a model, one that bases cataloging, circulating, and housing decisions on three factors: the type of data on a CDROM, who will use the data, and how will they use it.     

The Development and Management of a University Microforms Collection

Microforms emerged as a major means of acquiring library resources during the '60s, and libraries acquired a large number of titles in this format. The management of these materials was frequently neglected, however. Further growth in the '70s increased the need for their control. The development and growth of the University of Oklahoma Libraries Microforms Area is described, and reasons for managerial decisions are provided. Construction of a new building led library personnel to design a new Microforms Area with a user-friendly atmosphere. Factors contributing to the successful use of microforms and the need to continue to develop and maintain microform collections are discussed.     

Cataloging a Contested Classic: Joseph Baldwin's The Flush Times of Alabama and Mississippi (1853)

This article discusses the publication history of a significant pre-Civil War work of legal literature and considers controversies caused by the book's contents and cataloging errors caused by its various editions. It appends a bibliography of all print editions.     

The Program for Cooperative Cataloging’s Transformative Role as a Leader of Change

Abstract

The transformation of library metadata encoded in MARC to linked data will enable libraries to participate in the Semantic Web. This transformation, however, will be an iterative development dependent upon community-based decisions. The PCC, as a community-based organization, is ideally positioned to lead this transformation. As PCC guides this transition, three broad areas must be resolved: the conversion of legacy data to linked data, the use of identifiers to support controlled headings, and the transformation of current workflows to linked-data counterparts. By embracing the Web as a community, PCC can confirm its relevance in a complex web of global data.     

Collaborative Cataloging within a Centralized Network: The Case of the University of the West Indies,Mona Campus

Efforts at networking and cooperation have flourished for some time at the University of the West Indies (UWI), a regional institution in the English-speaking Caribbean. Due to their common mission and shared goals, libraries within the system have collaborated on projects to enhance the services provided to their clients. In its attempt at collaboration, the Mona Campus established the UWI Mona Information Network, the primary goal of which is the creation of a campus-wide online catalog with member libraries having access to a larger pool of resources. Most of the departmental libraries within the system have struggled with their inability to adequately acquire and provide access to their collections. To this end some of these libraries have collaborated with the UWI Library to have their holdings added to the online public access catalog (OPAC). This article presents an overview of the collaborative efforts of the UWI Mona Libraries.     

Temporary Book Storage Using a Document Management Company

Finding an appropriate temporary storage location for books and providing access to them is a significant challenge for libraries undergoing renovations. The current article describes the use of a document management company by an academic library to store 430,000 books for 8 months and provide a retrieval-on-demand service. Aspects covered include the selection of a commercial storage provider with its own retrieval service; details of the move to and from offsite storage; the integration of the service with library processes; communications and user feedback; book usage during the storage period; overall costs; and lessons learned from the experience.
