Supporting Evidence-Based Medicine: A Survey of U.S. Medical Librarians

This study sought to identify medical librarians’ roles in supporting evidence-based medicine (EBM) practice; determine whether medical librarians’ work settings, work experiences, or job titles made a difference in their EBM responsibilities; and find out medical librarians’ perceptions of their roles in EBM practice. An online survey was distributed to U.S. medical librarians. The results showed that medical librarians had positive perceptions of their EBM-related responsibilities, which were diverse and specific. Their work experience, work settings, and job title categories related to some of their EBM responsibilities, as well as the nature of some of the responsibilities.

A Mixed-Method Study of Undergraduate and First Year Librarian Positions in Academic Libraries in the United States

The aim of this study is to better understand the prevalence, scope, and unique challenges of undergraduate and first year librarians over the last decade, through the use of quantitative and qualitative data from job listings, online surveys, and phone interviews. The findings indicate that there is very little consensus about what the undergraduate librarian does, how the work is structured on a daily basis, and how its goals are negotiated and assessed. Further, undergraduate librarians face a number of issues, including navigating vaguely defined responsibilities, establishing their professional credibility, and communicating their role within the library and to the university. Survey participants reported experiencing tension between the traditional (reference, instruction, collection development) and undergraduate-specific aspects of their duties, indicating that it is difficult for them to prioritize engagement and outreach. While the literature on blended librarianship anticipates some of these issues, undergraduate librarians are unique because they provide an intersection between broader higher education priorities and the academic library. The author stipulates that the lack of definition, strain, and the perception of undergraduate librarianship as an entry-level position is incongruent with the importance colleges and universities place on undergraduate student success.     

国外开放获取馆员:岗位设置、核心角色与我国培养策略

[目的/意义] 通过对比分析国外开放获取馆员的岗位能力与核心角色,提出我国开放获取馆员的人才培养策略。[方法/过程] 采用文献调查法、网络调查法以及内容分析法,调研21所国外图书馆开放获取馆员的岗位设置、业务案例,从开放获取服务管理员、开放获取组织者、科学共同体支持者、开放知识培训教育者的角度分析其核心角色。[结果/结论] 从制定开放获取馆员能力培训体系,营造开放获取服务环境,以及立足开放科学评价体系,培养科学共同体的开放获取素养两方面提出我国开放获取馆员的培养策略,为我国开放获取馆员的职业发展提供理论与实践启示。     

Classifying Librarians: Cataloger,Taxonomist, Metadatician?

ABSTRACT

A study of job advertisements for technical services librarian positions provided insight into critical aspects of the library profession, issues that affect the work life of academic librarians. A review of several hundred job ads with a focus on job titles revealed problems with the use of terminology and the actual conceptualization of positions. Based on the ads reviewed, libraries also appear to be raising their expectations for types of knowledge and skills required and personal qualities desired.     

A Look at Internet Privacy and Security Issues and Their Relationship to the Electronic Job Search:

As more job searchers use the Internet and on-line services, librarians and career services professionals will play a greater role in educating clients about the ethical implications of an electronic job search. In this study, "electronic privacy" will be defined, and laws which govern electronic security as well as reactions to those laws will bc reviewed. Corporate policies on employee electronic accounts will be discussed. Technological methods being used to ensure confidentiality and privacy will be examined, andthe role and responsibility of career services professionals and librarians in training clients on an ethical job search will be addressed.     

Using Consultation Data to Guide Data Services Training for Liaison Librarians

Abstract

As data services gain momentum in academic libraries, liaison librarians are expected to be part of the education force for data literacy. Nonetheless, due to the broad scope of data literacy, training librarians to improve data-related skills can be challenging. This article used consultation statistics to identify tools and resources employed to solve users’ data questions. The results offered insights into users’ data needs and provided librarians with a clear direction to further develop data skills in their assigned disciplines. The methodology used in this study can be replicated at other institutions to identify needs and to direct professional development.

近几年来,为弥补传统的以文献类型组织资源建设的不足,进一步优化资源建设,推动资源建设学科化、专业化,国内一些高校图书馆开始尝试资源建设工作按学科来组织的模式。在此介绍清华大学图书馆探索资源建设学科化的实践,分析学科馆员参与资源建设的实施策略,提出进一步完善学科资源建设、优化学科服务的思考。     

Librarians' assistance to students in the information seeking process: Perspectives of higher education teachers and librarians

Seeking information is an integral part of the tasks that students are assigned by their teachers. They turn to librarians, or librarians offer them assistance in relation to this pursuit. This qualitative study sought to obtain in-depth insights on the perceptions and expectations of university teachers and librarians with respect to the importance of and students' participation and librarians' assistance in the information seeking process. Teachers and librarians understand the importance of the information-seeking process for students in the development of their skills. Whereas most of their perceptions of the students' roles in the process do align, there are certain differences in their perceptions and expectations of students. The results enhance the understanding of the information-seeking process and teachers and librarians' perceptions on it. They contribute toward planning to facilitate cooperation between academic librarians and teachers in situations of information behavior resulting from the educational process and context.     

开放科学环境下数据馆员的实践探析

[目的/意义]开放科学环境下,明确数据馆员的基本内涵、在业务流程中的作用及其职业可持续发展方案,有助于对数据馆员进行岗位设置,并为学术图书馆开展创新服务提供参考借鉴。[研究设计/方法]系统调研国内外数据馆员相关文献,梳理其基本概念、职能作用,分析学术图书馆数据馆员的发展实践与现实需求的匹配情况。根据数据馆员招聘信息,提炼其工作内容,提出可持续发展方案。[结论/发现]数据馆员能够在开放科学环境下支持科研人员处理数据管理实践与数据治理事宜。学术图书馆以教育培训和促进职业群体自我发展的方式,增加数据馆员的竞争力,提升科研用户满意度。[创新/价值]提炼数据馆员基本研究框架、工作维度模型;提出从数据生产与流转周期角度剖析开放科学环境下科研数据全生命周期,阐明数据馆员在其中的作用。     

Access and Express: Professional Perspectives on Public Library Makerspaces and Intellectual Freedom

This study examines the roles of makerspaces and librarians in public libraries, as defined by nine librarians instituting makerspace services. It explores their understanding of creative spaces and library policy, specifically the foundational principles of intellectual freedom and access. Using constructivist discourse analysis tools, this study analyzes interview data to illuminate a concept of access grounded in expression, incorporating hands-on activities, tools, and social connections. This study has implications for practitioners and policymakers in reconsidering access as a positive liberty enabled by social contexts, and librarians’ enzymatic roles in facilitating those contexts.     

图书馆员情绪劳动与工作满意度、工作倦怠关系研究

通过对166位图书馆员的问卷调查,探究图书馆员情绪劳动及其工作满意度、工作倦怠三者之间的关系。研究发现图书馆员情绪劳动现象确实存在,但其工作满意度较高,工作倦怠行为只发生在个人成就感降低的维度中。情绪劳动中的表面行为维度与工作倦怠中的情绪耗竭维度呈正相关关系;情绪劳动中的深度行为维度与工作满意度呈正相关关系;情绪劳动中的深度行为维度与工作倦怠中的情绪耗竭维度和人格解体维度呈负相关关系;情绪劳动中的深度行为维度与工作倦怠中的个人成就感降低维度呈正相关关系。     

Involving the Library and Campus Community in Institutional Repository Projects

College and university libraries invest a significant amount of funding and staff time in institutional repository projects with the goal of collecting, preserving, and disseminating the intellectual output of their communities. Institutional repositories are often built without an expressed need for such a service; for this reason, libraries must actively promote them, educate users, and liaise with faculty to ensure success. Technical services and public services librarians have equally important roles in instituting and ensuring the success of institutional repositories in their communities.     

技术环境变革中国外图书馆员角色转变特点初探

[目的/意义]随着图书馆技术环境变革和职能拓展,图书馆员角色和形象被赋予许多新的期望。分析图书馆员的角色转变既能了解环境变化对职业发展的要求,也能为馆员素质提升和更好应对技术变革压力提供建议。[方法/过程]利用从数据库中搜集到的关于图书馆员角色的外文期刊文献题录信息,利用标题词分析方法对已有研究中的图书馆员角色进行分类,并根据角色定位描述图书馆员的岗位职责内容。[结果/结论]已有研究对学科馆员、教学馆员、医学馆员等关注度最高,技术变革也催生了数据馆员、社交媒体馆员等新岗位,图书馆员角色呈现分类细化、专业化和交互性增强、角色重叠明显等特点,技术对图书馆员角色的影响逐渐加强。     

Leveraging Librarian Liaison Expertise in a New Consultancy Role

This paper presents a case study of an advisory role that librarians successfully developed with faculty editors to increase the visibility and readership of an open access scholarly publication. The study represents an example of how expertise among liaison librarians and other library service professionals can be leveraged in new consultancy roles in support of evolving library service models. It also depicts local application of a hybrid model for librarianship that combines the functional specialist and subject librarian liaison roles in implementing advisory activities and recommendations. The liaison librarians successfully used their knowledge of scholarly communications and applied innovative bibliometric analysis to help enhance the discoverability and user experience of an online journal publication. The librarians made specific recommendations for optimizing journal website content organization, search functionality, metadata standards and marketing opportunities that were subsequently implemented by the editors and platform managers. The faculty editor places a high value on these recommendations, and the librarian advisory role continues to develop. Our study also outlines many of the essential considerations that scholar-editors and librarian advisors can use to help implement open access scholarly publishing projects successfully.     

图书馆阅读推广人角色研究:类型构成、前置因素和后续影响

阅读推广已经成为图书馆的主流服务,但作为阅读推广主体的阅读推广人在实践中仍然存在角色模糊的问题,这在一定程度上制约了阅读推广人的专业化发展。本文在借鉴公关人员角色和团队成员角色研究的理论视角和实证研究的基础上,采用混合研究方法,试图明确图书馆阅读推广人角色的类型构成,并分析其前置因素和后续影响。研究发现,当前图书馆阅读推广人的角色类型包括组织联络、宣传评估、调研策划、现场主导和内部辅导;这一角色分类体现了从管理者到混合型再到技工的连续体,其中组织联络位于管理者一端,宣传评估位于技工一端,调研策划因其典型的混合型特点位于中间位置,而现场主导和内部辅导这两个角色则可能位于该连续体的其他任何中间位置;除了性别和学科背景之外,职称、所在图书馆的类型、图书馆所处地域和工作性质对图书馆阅读推广人的角色类型都有一定的影响,而这些角色类型又在很大程度上影响他们对角色重要性的认知和对工作满意度的评价。本研究可为图书馆培养阅读推广人提供参考。图1。表6。参考文献47。附录1。
