Serials Management in the New Shanghai Library

Abstract

With a total floor space of 83,000 square meters, the new Shanghai Library, which opened on 20 December 1996, is among the top ten largest libraries in the world. The library was perhaps the first in China to implement international standards. In the early 1980s the Shanghai Library began cataloguing foreign books and periodicals following Western practices. In 1980, the library compiled a draft set of cataloguing rules for foreign serials based on ISBD(S). The library and the Library Society of Shanghai then organised a number of training classes for serials librarians from all over the country. Earlier, in December 1979, the Sixth Subcommittee of the National Document Standardisation Committee had begun compiling a set of cataloguing rules for serials. A draft based on ISBD(S), written by staff of the library, was put forward to the Fuzhou (city) Meeting in March 1983. After several discussions and revisions the National Standard Bureau finally approved the rules (GB 3792.3-85). In order to further the stardardisation of serials management, the Shanghai Library has issued its catalogue cards for serials to other libraries and information units. The catalogue cards have been widely distributed to the Chinese library community. Because of these developments, the library has become a de facto centre of serials research in the country.

介绍了国际研究数据联盟（Research Data Alliance, RDA）的目标、主要任务、组织架构及运行机制。当前 该组织已建立了约30 个工作组和兴趣组,在数据引用、永久标识、元数据、数据分类编码、数据互操作等领域进展显 著。基于调研和分析,提出了RDA对于我国科学数据共享在运行机制、组织机构、研究领域、参与机构、科学问题及 信息化手段等方面的启示。     

RDA与CSR在西文连续出版物著录中的区别

资源描述和检索(RDA)已于2010年6月正式在网上发布,CONSER作为美国连续出版物编目的权威指导机构参与了RDA的测试工作。本文介绍了CONSER标准记录文件(CSR)与RDA连续性资源著录部分一些主要字段的变化和区别以及新增字段。

根据对《中国文献编目规则》与《资源描述与检索》（RDA）的比较,提出RDA用于中文编目实践需要作出的修订。包括：代表作品和内容表达的检索点（名称一题名问题）,中文连续出版物题名的主要变化,个人活动时期或朝代,获得方式的价格单位,中国古代地图的比例尺用语。     

AACR2与RDA的联系及在图书著录部分的区别

RDA作为国际通用的编目新规则将取代存在和使用了30多年的编目规则AACR2。其编目规则从理念到结构都发生了空前的变化。作者根据RDA草案和相关文献资料,分析AACR2与RDA之间的关系以及RDA在资源描述方面的不同,目的在于与时俱进地了解国际编目的新动向、新知识,以适应数字化时代对图书馆编目员的新要求。

Statistics ofHistorical Abstracts andAmerica: History and Life databases

Historical Abstracts (HA) andAmerica: History and Life (AHL) are bibliography serials that cite the appearance of scholarly literature in history and also related fields such as political science, sociology, anthropology, and folklore, as they relate to history. Both titles first appeared as print publications,HA in 1955 andAHL in 1964. After the use of computers was incorporated into the production process, electronic files of the print volumes were made available as online databases,HA from volume 19, andAHL from volume 1. Both publications are now available on CD-ROM, along with other ABC-Clio reference titles:ARTBibliographies Modern, ABC-Pol Sci, theExegy current events database, andBibliography of North American Indians.     

Multiple Versions Revisited

Summary

The entityrelationship model in the IFLA draft Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records (FRBR) provides a useful mechanism for reexamining the multipleversions problem in serials cataloging. The model provides a hierarchy of levels of abstraction that accommodates versions at both the concrete level of an exact reproduction of text, etc. (the manifestation level), and a more abstract level of an approximate reproduction of essential content (the expression level). Such a flexible model is especially useful given the expansion of novel version classes, especially that of dynamic remotely-accessible electronic documents. But along with the increase in usefulness afforded by the FRBR model comes an inevitable increase in ambiguity regarding what constitutes a version within the model, and at what level of that model, and ultimately what constitutes a work.
