In this essay, Peter Trifonas tries to show that there is no overcoming of the techno-philosophical grounding of intellectual freedom and academic responsibility or research action within the speculum of an all-seeing, all-knowing university. Instead, he argues that through Derrida's notion of an open community of the question, deconstruction has the promise to infuse the university and its teaching body with the play of difference in interpretation and invention that will produce new forms of knowledge and an altered academic responsibility. This new academic responsibility born of a deconstruction of the university and its closed system of disciplinary logic is worked out as a performative intelligibility or an inkling of purpose yet-to-come ( avenir ). The call for an open community of research around questions and not disciplines displays the ethical undercurrent of a new kind of academic responsibility—a responsibility negotiated both within the extant community and between that community and those to whom the highly problematic we of higher education are more or less ultimately accountable: the State and the political constituency of public society.  相似文献

In this paper, I empirically study the effect ofeconomic literacy at the high school level on students'intention to attend college. Using a multinomial logitmodel and the data from the National Assessment of Economic Education survey, I find that astudent's perception of the helpfulness of economics inthinking about getting more education positively affectsthe intention to attend college. Other factors found to be influential include ethnicbackground, academic ability, performance in highschool, parents' education, per capita personal incomein a student's county of residence, and tuition ofvocational/two-year colleges in the student's home state.  相似文献

This article gives some insights into the development and teaching of graduate Gerontology courses by way of distance education. Some general comments are given regarding distance education and then the two formats are explored in detail. One of the formats centers around television (video, cable television, and interactive television instructions) and the other, the Internet. Problems and advantages of teaching in each format are explored. Tips on "Some things to do" and "Some things to avoid" are shared. Attention is given to some of the instructional "techniques" which seem to work best for teaching in these formats. These tips should be helpful to persons who are just beginning teaching or who want to teach in either or both of these formats.  相似文献

At a time when some 24% of the Brazilian population of 182 million are functionally illiterate, the author shows how illiteracy is concentrated in traditionally poor and disadvantaged social and ethnic groups as well as in certain regions of the country. He surveys the changes in legislation, policies and attitudes relating to literacy over the past few decades and describes how literacy is increasingly seen as a continuous process rather than a short-term, low-cost intervention. While there is still a lack of a broad, coordinated policy and adequate funding in this area, and while the challenges remain formidable, the author concludes that Brazil is moving slowly in the right direction.  相似文献

This study investigated the relationship between family factors and students’ scientific literacy performance in Hong Kong, which has excelled in science performance in previous international studies. Data were obtained from the 2006 Programme for International Student Assessment. Multilevel analysis was used to examine the relationship between parental involvement and investment and students’ scientific literacy performance. It was found that students’ scientific literacy performance, which was measured by their science achievement and self-efficacy towards science, were significantly associated with certain types of parental investment and involvement even after controlling background factors of both students and schools. Parental investment in cultural resources and parental involvement in terms of organising science learning enrichment activities at an early age were found to be significantly associated with students’ scientific literacy performance. Activities that could be provided at an early age (e.g. watching TV programmes about science, reading books on scientific discovery, watching, reading or listening to science fictions) were found to be highly effective activities for promoting children’s science achievement and self-efficacy.  相似文献

This article introduces the topic of this issue of the review. Because there has been no systematic evaluation, so far, of the impact of western assistance programmes for higher education in eastern and central Europe since they got underway in 1989‐1990, the hope is that this publication will kick off the necessary debate. In general, two stages in the reform process can be identified, a reparatory stage that lasted around three years, and now a holistic stage, that emphasizes a systemic approach to reform. It is hoped that the eight articles making up the topic will serve as catalysts for many more studies on all aspects of this vast problem.  相似文献
