Service as collaboration: an integrated process in teaching and research. A response to Greenbank

ABSTRACT

A key policy issue in mass HE systems is whether academics need training and support in their teaching roles. A symposium of five contributors to this journal was largely negative and featured the views that this would prioritise skills at the expense of disciplinary knowledge and threaten academic freedom. The contrary view is presented that teaching can be improved by such courses but that the argument as to whether this is the case should be based on research evidence and by listening to a variety of perspectives.     

Improving teaching quality and the learning organisation

Abstract

This study applied a learning organisation framework to understand academic departments’ efforts to improve teaching quality. The theoretical framework was generated from literature on learning organisations, organisations devoted to continuous improvement through continuous learning. Research questions addressed relationships among departments’ vision, leadership, knowledge management, communication, learning culture, and teaching improvement. Using survey data collected from department chairs, this study found a positive association between learning organisation behaviours and the improvement of teaching.

Scholarship as intervention: critique,collaboration and the research imagination

Following Scott (this issue), this paper examines how environmental education researchers might intervene to greater effect in the policies and practices of our governments and local and international organizations through individual and collective programmes of research. Suggesting that public scholarship or academic activism can engage a wide spectrum of genres and outcomes of research activity, the paper proposes that what stands out are not the methods employed in seeking to have research ‘be of use’, but instead what can be termed modes of engagement. These can be described as including interpretive critique or ‘speaking truth to power’, public space and collaboration, and the role of research imagination in social life. These three modes are discussed with the hope that researchers will consider their possibilities and implications in working towards more powerful public scholarship in environmental education.

Creative pedagogies and collaboration: an action research project

This action research study involves nine elementary school teacher-researchers, one university faculty member, and one graduate student engaged in developing creative pedagogical practices in one elementary school in an urban school in Alabama, USA. Participants found that a teacher’s experience of agency and their ability to work creatively depended upon a clear articulation of structures and the identification of areas of flexibility and possibility. Further, participants endeavored to promote avenues for ongoing communication and collaboration between teachers and the principal with the view that creativity based in communication would sustain transformative dialogues in the school.     

艺术类学校大学英语阅读教学研究

高校应针对艺术类高校大学生的特点,结合实际英语教学现状,对大学英语教学中阅读教学进行探索,提出在英语阅读教学过程中应注重以下两方向,一是重视语篇表层结构分析,二是重视语篇底层结构分析,以此提高艺术类高校大学生对文章理解的完整性,提高学生的英语实际交际能力,进而能够进一步提高学生的英语水平。     

Attitudes toward research and teaching at some Nigerian Agricultural University institutions

Abstract

The attitudes of faculty members from four universities toward teaching, research and the associated reward system were studied through questionnaires. The survey generated 302 responses (i.e. 76.8% response rate) from two agricultural universities as well as two faculties of agriculture. Principal component analysis shows that attitudes toward teaching and research are multifaceted. Faculty members believe that teaching and research are mutually supportive, and represent the basic mission of the universities; the reward system influences teaching staff's participation in research, while both teaching and research offer satisfaction. Teaching and research are incompatible but have a positive affect on teaching. However, t-test analyses show that the faculty differ in the strength of their attitudes due to institutional affiliations and personal characteristics (such as gender, tenure, and rank).     

关于开放大学环境下微课程教学设计研究

随着信息技术的迅猛发展,智能手机及其他智能终端设备得到广泛应用,学习者打破了传统的学习方式,随时随地都能够进行学习的微课程成为关注的焦点。在开放大学环境下,微课程教学成为一种新的潮流,为学生提供更加多样的教学模式,同时也为学习者提供了更加多样化的学习平台,促使学习者更有效地接受知识。而本文从开放大学环境教育出发,阐述了微课程教学对开放教育的重要性,并对开放大学环境下微课程教学特点和教学设计进行了详细分析,与此同时也提出相应的建议,为有效推广微课程教学奠定了坚实的基础。     

Teacher collaboration: 30 years of research on its nature,forms, limitations and effects

ABSTRACT

This article reprises and reflects on 30 years of the author’s work on teacher collaboration. The distinctive nature of this work has not been in making a case for teacher collaboration in terms of its benefits for students, teachers, or educational change. These arguments are widely available elsewhere. Rather it has examined ways of collaborating that are available to teachers, how formal or informal collaboration should be, how collaborative efforts can be misused or misdirected, and what factors must be considered when deliberately designing teacher collaboration so it will have the most beneficial effects. The article discusses the explanatory and strategic power of three concepts in particular—contrived collegiality, professional capital, and collaborative professionalism. Conclusions are drawn about next steps for educational research in terms of establishing clear typologies of teacher collaboration in relation to their impact and appropriateness in different circumstances.     

教师教学专长研究:概念、方法及启示

教学专长研究对外语教师教育具有理论与实践意义,有助于厘清外语教师教学专长的特征与构成,明确其发展机制,并总结促进该专长发展的实践策略,为外语教师个体成为专家开辟可行路径。基于多个专业领域专长研究的成果,本文从多维视角梳理了教学专长概念内涵的衍变及相关研究方法,并讨论了教学专长研究对我国外语教师教育研究与实践的启示。     

Transforming teaching challenges into learning opportunities: interdisciplinary reflective collaboration

ABSTRACT

Teaching in higher education poses unique sets of challenges, especially for academics in the engineering, built sciences and information science education disciplines. This article focuses on how reflective collaboration can support academics in their quest to find unique solutions to challenges in different academic contexts. A reflective collaboration framework was applied during a three-year interpretive research process at an Engineering, Information Technology and Built Environment Faculty in a residential research intensive university in South Africa. Interdisciplinary reflective collaboration was found to bring richness and depth into investigations of complex teaching challenges. This framework provides a structure to support the transformation of teaching challenges into learning opportunities through the promotion of dialogue, critique and reflection between engineering and education academics.

目前淮南师范学院体育专业学生在教育实习中存在着一些问题,对其针对性的提出解决的对策,可以减少克服教育实习的不足,提高体育师范生的实习水平,进而提高他们的教学能力。     

Academics at work: mentoring in research,teaching, and service

Abstract

This qualitative interview study investigates how mentoring is used to develop knowledge and skills for early career academics across the academic roles of research, teaching, and service. Results indicate similar amounts of mentoring in research for men and women, more mentoring in teaching for women, and a lack of mentoring in service across gender. Methodological, theoretical, and practical implications for institutions of higher education are discussed, particularly those aimed at addressing inequality for women.
