The High School Schedule in Midwestern Secondary Schools

Abstract

The role of sensory feedback factors in determining learning and memory was investigated in terms of the effects of four different modes of movement control of sensory input on memory of stimulus patterns-i.e., (1) visual tracking of the pattern without manual control, (2) parallel pursuit tracking of the pattern with a hand-con- trolled visual cursor, (3) opposed pursuit tracking of the stimulus pattern with a hand-controlled visual cursor, and (4) compensatory negative feedback tracking in which the subject observed only the error of tracking the stimulus pattern. Results indicated that mode of sensory feedback control of sensed input of stimulus patterns during learning determined immediate memory, and that memory was superior for modes of feedback control in which the pattern of stimulation and of movement could be compared. The main conclusion was that the processes of active and passive learning and their role in determining learning and memory are specifiable and predictable as variable forms of movement-controlled sensory feedback.

民办中学德育工作的困境及出路

作为基础教育的"弱势群体",目前民办中学的德育工作仍不尽人意。主要表现为:只重理论说教,而忽视实际效果的德育方式;强调品德认知,而轻视品德践履的德育过程以及多功利实用,少精神引导的德育价值。之所以如此,主观上源于教育者对德育重要性的认知不足、理念落后及自身专业素质不高;客观上主要在于相关支持不力、制度不全。走出民办中学德育困境,要充分认识和把握德育工作存在的渗透性、价值的潜在性和显效的缓慢性特征,要着力提升德育教师的专业素养,要加强校园文化环境建设,营造良好的育人氛围。     

School Effects in Scottish Secondary Schools

The present paper examines whether there is significant variation in schooling outcomes between Scottish secondary schools, and if so, how much is associated with pupil intake, and how much is associated with the schools they attend. It also examines whether schools vary in their effectiveness for different types of pupils, and whether schools tend to be superior, or inferior, across three different outcome measures. The study employed a subsample of data from the 1977 Scottish School Leavers Survey on over 700 pupils from 15 schools in one administrative division. These data were linked to data on the verbal reasoning quotients of the pupils, derived from a test administered to them before they entered secondary school. For each of the 15 schools we estimated the expected scores on measures of English, arithmetic and overall attainment for pupils with below average, average, and above average ability, controlling for pupils’ verbal ability, gender, prestige of father's occupation, mother's education, and number of siblings. The study shows there was wide variation in schooling outcomes between secondary schools in the division, even after controlling for family background characteristics and pupil ability prior to entering secondary school. There were few schools that were particularly effective for low ability pupils, but not high ability pupils and vice versa. Schools tended to be effective, or ineffective, across all three outcome measures.

The Barnstable High School P.M. Program: One Approach to the Education of High-Risk High School Students

The P.M. Program, located at Barnstable High School (BHS) in Hyannis, Massachusetts, is an alternative high school program for students from 16 to 22 years old who, for a variety of personal, social, economic, and academic reasons, have not been successful in a traditional high school setting. Without compromising rigorous academic or behavioral standards, the program offers students a chance to attain a high school diploma rather than a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) through a variety of nontraditional means. Following a regular school calendar, the program holds classes from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday in the BHS. By meeting in the afternoon and evening, the students in the program are able to use all the facilities of the high school, including the library, computer laboratories, science laboratories, and home economics kitchen, at a time when these facilities are idle. On Fridays classes meet from 8:30 a.m. to noon in a local church building because there is no classroom space available in the high school during day school hours. The switch to morning hours on Fridays allows us to meet Massachusetts time and learning requirements without holding classes on Friday nights, a time when few students would attend.
