Low-performing schools in rural settings can face challenges common to all struggling schools, such as low student motivation and maintaining a qualified teaching staff. However, aspects of rural schools’ settings, such as the distance from urban areas and the commute between the schools and the students’ and teachers’ homes, can exacerbate the challenges that rural schools face. This article focuses on the experiences of nine rural schools that were part of a study for the U.S. Department of Education on the school improvement process in a purposive sample of 35 schools receiving federal funds through the School Improvement Grants (SIG) program. In particular, it examines how respondents in the rural schools perceived that the schools’ rural setting influenced the schools’ challenges and improvement actions and presents findings on the recruitment and retention of teaching staff, an activity integral to school improvement efforts under SIG.  相似文献

Factors to which women attribute their success were explored in this study using narrative analysis of the life stories of contemporary eminent women living in Finland. The participants were 12 Finnish women who have achieved success and peer recognition in various fields including science, business and finance, politics, and the arts. Four universal themes emerged from an analysis of the interview data. In their stories of achievement, the main factors were their personal self-reliance, the superiority of their work, and their interdependence with others including family members and co-workers. In addition, every woman talked about the egalitarianism that pervades Finnish society and its importance in the home and workplace. The voices of these women confirmed and extended the knowledge base about the course of talent development for females and the meaning of success for eminent women.  相似文献

Hierarchical linear modeling was employed to study the relations between the degree of Chapter 1 and regular-program coordination in high-poverty schools and students' longitudinal achievements while controlling for the compositional features of the schools. Variables derived from the national Prospects survey were developed to represent school-level coordination and composition. These variables were used to predict the learning rates of 1st- and 3rd-grade cohort students over 2 (Cohort 1) and 3 (Cohort 3) school years. The results were not consistent across cohorts or subjects; however, some school characteristics significantly predicted the students' learning rates in more than 1 of the 4 possible analyses. The main findings were (a) additional days of school were associated positively with 1st-grade cohort math and reading achievements, (b) students in rural 1st-grade cohort schools learned at significantly slower rates in reading and math relative to their urban peers, and (c) schools that coordinated their Chapter 1 programs with other school services had students who learned at faster rates. These and other findings revealed some situations in which high-poverty schools can influence, through schoolwide reform efforts, the academic achievements of their at-risk students.  相似文献

Fashion is easily understood as something to do with style and consumption. However, the concept of fashion can also be applied when organisations and the change in them is analysed and explained. Universities and their departments adopt different kinds of policy fashions. This article approaches management by results and evaluation in the Finnish context as fashions and success stories which universities and their departments have either accepted or rejected. Fashions and reactions to them have created new practices and cultures, and simultaneously either displaced the old practices or taken their place with them. 国务院日前启动了农村义务教育阶段学生营养改善计划,中央财政的160多亿元资金划拨到680个县(市)的农村小学,为农村学生提供营养膳食补助。本文利用对甘肃、宁夏的122所农村小学的调研数据,分析农村小学生的营养健康问题,以及校长、老师和家长对学生营养健康知识的了解程度。建议政府在实施营养健康改善计划的过程中,需要特别注重农村贫困地区学生营养健康存在的问题,对学校提供资金支持的同时也需要对校长、老师和家长进行营养知识培训,优化补贴资源的分配,使中央资金得到有效利用。  相似文献

叙事是一种久远弥新的道德教育方式。继价值澄清、认知推理等努力之后,20世纪80年代中后期,以美国品格教育(character education)为代表的西方学校教育将叙事作为道德教育的重要方式之一。道德叙事产生教育作用的内在机制是:叙事的过程实质上也是价值传递过程;道德知识与科学知识之间存在着区别;道德叙事契合了儿童道德形成过程的叙事性思维(narrative thinking)特点。我国学校道德教育的叙事策略包括指导学生阅读美德故事,挖掘教材中学故事的道德教育价值,等等。  相似文献

Program assessments are an essential part of the ongoing survival of teaching centers performed by faculty development personnel at institutions of higher education. Little research is available to guide developers in performing these assessments. In this article we describe assessments conducted at three Canadian universities and highlight the theoretical models used to guide the process. Reflections on the strengths and challenges are discussed for each program assessment for the purpose of assisting faculty developers in performing similar program assessments of their faculty development offices.

The National Cancer Institute supports our research on the Goals for Health (GFH) program as a part of their priority to reduce cancer incidence. GFH consists of a 12-workshop 6th-grade program led by trained high-school leaders and a 10-workshop 7th-grade program taught by health instructors. The 6th-grade program occurs in small groups, and includes goal-setting activities, skits, videos, and healthy snacks. Challenges to program integrity are intensified due to the fact high-school volunteers implement the entire 6th-grade program. Strategies for optimizing program implementation of the peer-led component of GFH are presented in light of their feasibility at 6 rural middle schools in Virginia and New York. Modifications for future implementation of the 6th-grade component of GFH are presented as well as implications for peer-led community-based prevention efforts.  相似文献

实施"国培计划"是促进教育均衡发展的创新性举措。采用问卷调查和统计分析的方法对"国培计划"实施绩效影响因素及其提升策略进行研究。调查结果表明,参培动机强度、参培教师所在学校对培训的重视程度、培训满意度和教龄是影响"国培计划"实施绩效的重要因素。要想有效提升"国培计划"的实施绩效,学校要提高对"国培计划"的重视程度,选取参培动机强和有一定教龄的教师参加培训,承培单位也要探索有效提升参培教师满意度的策略。  相似文献
