It's All About Me: The User-Centered Approach as a Solution to the Challenges Posed by Information Literacy Instruction

The Future Voices in Public Services column is a forum for students in graduate library and information science programs to discuss key issues they see in academic library public services, to envision what they feel librarians in public service have to offer to academia, to tell us of their visions for the profession, or to tell us of research that is going on in library schools. We hope to provide fresh perspectives from those entering our field, in both the United States and other countries. Interested faculty of graduate library and information science programs, who would like their students’ ideas represented in these pages, are invited to contact Nancy H. Dewald at nxd7@psu.edu

通过借助贸易结合度、显性比较优势、贸易互补性三项代表性评价指标,分析近年中美两国的双边图书贸易情况可知,中国是美国重要的图书贸易伙伴,中美两国之间的图书贸易关系极为密切,贸易互补性显著.中国要继续保持与美国之间良好的图书贸易关系,一方面应进一步改善贸易结构,优化政策环境,加强文化输出,优化贸易方式与版权保护机制;另一方面也应注重本国综合国力与文化软实力的整体提升,提高文化开放水平,全面推进中国文化走向世界.     

ESPN's SportsCenter and Coverage of Women's Athletics: "It's a Boys' Club"

Since the passage of Title IX in 1972, participation in women's sports has grown dramatically. But despite the growing level of participation by female athletes at all competition levels and documented fan interest in women's athletics, coverage of women's sports remains inferior to that given male sports across all media. Tuggle's (1997) study showed that two national highlights programs (CNN's Sports Tonight and ESPN's SportsCenter) devoted only 5% of their airtime to women's athletics. This study is a replication of Tuggle's original study to determine whether the existence of two women's professional sports leagues has resulted in increased coverage of female athletics. Results of the 2002 study show that the answer is no. Indeed there was less coverage of women on SportsCenter during the 2002 study than there was during the earlier examination.

文章对英、美、澳、挪的网络信息保存政策进行研究,发现这些国家网络信息保存政策的优缺点,从中总结归纳了网络信息保存的最佳实践模式,并提出了我国网络信息保存政策制定的六点建议.     

All Things Cultured: An Analysis of Popular Culture Coverage on National Public Radio's All Things Considered

National Public Radio's flagship news program All Things Considered has long been known for its sophisticated style of political and cultural news coverage. In past years the program has increased the number and types of popular culture stories covered to reflect the changing interests of listeners. This content analysis found that coverage of popular culture significantly increased in relation to the more traditional “high” culture stories, such as opera and art. The results suggest that All Things Considered is working to bring more popular culture coverage to the program while not losing focus on its traditional style of news coverage.

美国公立大学图书馆很重视读者个人信息保护,大部分都有读者个人信息保护政策,涉及个人信息采集、使用、安全等各个方面,解释披露读者个人信息的限制以及相关的法律政策,并提供联系方式以便于读者咨询.通过这些政策,美国公立大学图书馆得以有据可循地保护图书馆读者的个人信息.

美国原生广告规模日益壮大,美国联邦贸易委员会作为主管部门,对原生广告进行治理,主要内容包括:向消费者明确标识“广告”、不能误导和暗示消费者、名人代言需负连带责任等.规制方式呈现透明化、立体化、标准化的特征.美国对原生广告的规制可为我国原生广告监管带来诸多启示.     

中美数字图书馆之比较研究

近年来,数字图书馆的发展受到了世界各国的普遍重视。本文通过对中美数字图书馆发展情况的比较分析,提出我国数字图书馆建设应在借鉴美国数字图书馆建设的先进经验的基础上,结合我国的具体情况,建设具有中国特色的数字图书馆。     

Free Newspapers in the United States: Alive and Kicking

Free newspapers are a substantial segment of the U.S. newspaper industry, as well as an under-studied topic within media research. This study considers the economic health of free newspapers in the United States and whether they face a dire future given their heavy reliance on advertising, a source of revenue that has been in decline for newspapers. One question guiding this research is whether free newspapers face two options: continue producing free content by relying on advertising (in addition to other revenue sources), or abandon the advertising-based business model. Seven research questions address a number of issues, such as whether free newspapers are profitable, if decision-makers are considering changing their business model, whether they are seeking alternative sources of revenue, whether reader engagement is connected to the price, or a lack of one, of a newspaper, and whether decision-makers are optimistic or pessimistic about the future of their industry. A Web-based survey asked decision-makers at free newspapers in the United States to respond to questions related to the health and future of their newspaper or newspapers. This survey was complemented by in-depth interviews with publishers of four different types of free newspapers in Texas. The study concludes by suggesting free newspapers are not only viable but in many markets they are thriving. Sweeping generalizations (often seen in industry discourse) about the future of print newspapers can be misleading. This study contributes a reality check and calls for further research on the economics of print media in the digital era.     

论信息公开政策与政府公信力的提升——兼议2008中国新闻政策的变化

信息公开政策的的确立和实行是提升政府公信力的重要基础,并有利于提高政府运作的透明度。2008年中国新闻政策的变化主题是信息公开,作者对08年我国信息公开政策形成的四个阶段及其特点进行了历时性分析,并指出了其在中国新闻传播发展历史上的意义。     

Sexual Harassment in the News: The United States and France

This article documents and accounts for important differences in press coverage of sexual harassment in the United States and France. Compared to French press coverage, American reporting on sexual harassment has been much more extensive and more likely to focus on domestic sexual harassment scandals involving political individuals or institutions. This is attributed largely to the American press greater reliance on business, greater journalistic freedom, stronger traditions of investigative journalism, as well as more inclusive legal definitions of sexual harassment. While silent on French scandals, due to global political realities, the French press has reported extensively on American sexual harassment scandals and has been more dismissive of the problems of sexual harassment and (American) feminist activists when reporting on the United States. This article further analyzes how each press has framed the problem of sexual harassment and how such framing varies by story and over time.     

United States v. Carmichael: Prior Restraint and the Internet

The discipline of communication is marked by an increasing number of means of understanding. Given the recent research explosion, specialization has accordingly become a major way of dealing with research and methodological diversity. Within this context, this analysis is predominantly definitional, seeking to isolate the unique features of qualitative research. This analysis first provides a survey of six major definitions of and approaches to qualitative research. Second, commonly shared characteristics of qualitative research are outlined, including the role that natural setting plays in the research design, the role of the researcher as both observer and participant, how subjects influence the content of a communication study, the influence of subject intentionality on the research report, and the pragmatic uses of qualitative research. Third, it is suggested that qualitative research is theoretically unique, satisfying the requirements for grounded theory. Finally, it is concluded that qualitative research is increasingly finding its own identity when viewed in terms of the goals and procedures of quantitative and critical approaches to communication.     

Body Politics: Coverage of Health Topics and Policy in U.S. Feminist Magazines

This study considered health coverage in 3 highly circulated U.S. feminist magazines: Ms., Bitch, and Bust. The authors used critical discourse analysis to examine 80 print and online articles for representations of liberal, social, radical, and postfeminist feminist ideologies in health coverage; the rhetorical strategies publications used for health content and how they compare with mainstream women’s magazines; and their emphasis on health policy and public health initiatives. The findings suggested that the magazines relied on discursive approaches resembling those of mainstream magazines when covering health, such as prioritizing personal health issues and individualized responses. However, through distinctive feminist lenses, they also performed better than mainstream women’s magazines in presenting health issues, representing a broader range of concerns affecting women, addressing people from diverse communities, and suggesting opportunities for collective response.

美国作为图书馆事业最发达的国家之一,其图书馆员制度十分完备,在职级分类制度、馆员录用晋升制度和教育培训制度等方面都有章可寻。与之相比,我国的图书馆员制度还不完善,需要根据我国的图书馆事业实际逐步改革和完善,以促进我国图书馆事业的健康发展。
