Decision Making for Collection Management

Just as the collection development policy is based on the objectives, scope and goals of a library, so is the broader collection management policy. Collection management goes beyond a policy of acquiring materials to address policies on retention, discard and weeding, preservation, and housing. A clear policy for each stage of materials handling contributes to the long range success of collection development. The author also points out the costs involved with each of these activities that library administrators must be aware of for effective management of the collection.

Television reviewing: A search for criteria

New communication technologies have increased Europe's importation of foreign, especially U.S., broadcasting programs. This essay addresses the question and protection of cultural identity from a European perspective. Four subgoals of diversity are outlined as yardsticks for the appropriateness of protection. Various activities designed to deregulate European broadcasting may potentially increase or reduce diversity. The economic and political pressure to weaken the European trusteeship model of broadcasting is likely to be successful.     

Television Doctors: An Analysis of Physicians in Fictional and Non-Fictional Television Programs

Although fictional television traditionally has portrayed doctors positively, recent fictional programming appears to portray physicians in a less positive manner. It has also been suggested that these images may conflict with depictions of doctors found on non-fictional television. A content analysis conducted here indicates that television's physician portrayals are less positive than they were in 1992, contemporary genres differ in their physician depictions, and television's doctor portrayals do not differ according to sex or race.     

Asking for Numbers and Quantities: Visual Design Effects in Paper&Pencil Surveys

When reporting frequencies and quantities in self-administeredsurveys using open-ended questions, respondents make use ofestimation strategies in order to provide a reasonable response.Accordingly, respondents do not only report pure numbers usingdigits, instead they extend their response to alphanumeric informationand explicit estimates (e.g. "about 10–20 cigarettes perday"). Such responses are not only of reduced quality, but theyalso require a lot of editing and cleaning in the post-fieldphase of a survey. While previous methodological work on frequencyquestions has focused on question wording, reference periodsand other text elements that have traditionally been consideredsignificant for high quality frequency responses, in this articlewe test the impact of various graphical characteristics of theresponse field in order to reduce the number of alphanumericelaborations and explicit estimates. The field-experimentalstudies reported are based on the assumption that respondentsinterpret formal characteristics of frequency questions as meaningfulinformation throughout the question answer process. The findingsreported will help survey designers reduce the proportion ofestimated responses. Received for publication October 24, 2007. Accepted for publication August 12, 2008.     

Automation Support for Collection Management and Control

The Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications, R&D arm of the National Library of Medicine, has had under development a minicomputer based INTEGRATED LIBRARY SYSTEM (ILS). ILS Version 1.0 has recently become operational and supports modules for master bibliographic file (MBF) creation and processing, circulation control, and serials check-in. A major emphasis in the design of the ILS has been on collection management and control. The present implementation supports "intelligently" assigned bar-codes for both monographs and serials from the MBF. The barcodes contain sufficient information about each item to provide efficient processing and allow easy use of portable devices for inventory control. In addition, unique functions have been included to allow identification of temporary item locations as well as to allow the compilation of statistics on items removed from the shelf but not circulated. The potential impact of these features on collection management will be discussed.

ABSTRACT

The Interlibrary and Document Delivery Services Department of the Randall Library at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington has been an active user of Innovative Interfaces Inc.'s ILL Module. Our association started with beta testing in the winter of 1994 and it continues today with release 2000. Since our first use of this module, UNCW has processed around 42,500 borrowing requests. This article reviews the use of the III ILL Module five years later.

Willingness to Pay for Public Television and the Advent of "Look-Alike" Cable Television Channels: A Case Study

In this case study we examine willingness to pay (WTP) for PBS using an open-ended, single-question contingent valuation method. Using data collected from 128 mail and 101 telephone surveys, we develop illustrative findings with respect to 'look-alike' cable television on WTP for PBS. Inverse demand equations were estimated. Statistically significant effects were found in models estimated with both biased and adjusted data using ordinary least squares, restricted least squares, and Tobit censored regression methods.     

Delivering Information Literacy Instruction for a Joint International Program: An Innovative Collaboration Between Two Libraries

This article focuses on a collaborative project between Mount Saint Vincent University Library and Bermuda College Library to introduce students to services and resources at the libraries of the partner institutions. Using Web conferencing software that allowed for voice, instant messaging chat, and live Web demonstration, a series of workshops was developed to introduce students to the concepts of information and literacy and reinforce for the students that they were able to access librarians and library services at both institutions. Issues relating to both the students’ home library at Bermuda College in Hamilton, Bermuda and their remote library at Mount Saint Vincent University in Nova Scotia, Canada are examined, including the obstacles that have been surmounted as well as recommendations for other libraries considering this type of partnership. Strategies, activities, and tools used to implement the initiative are discussed.
