Medical rare book provenance

Provenance is defined as the record of a book's ownership history. Its value and uses are explored. A survey of provenance practices in medical school rare book libraries found that only 21% of the reporting libraries maintain this important file. Examples of the uses and value of a provenance file in a medical rare book collection are presented. Decisions necessary to institute and maintain such a file are outlined and discussed.

Collection development policies and practices in medical school rare book libraries

A survey of collection development policies and practices in medical school rare book libraries indicated that only 20% had documented criteria for collection development. The advantages of preparing and maintaining a formal written collection development policy are presented with guidelines for formulating such a policy.

Negotiating Journalistic Professionalism

South Korea's OhmyNews reports unique consequences of citizen reporting and participation. While many citizen news operations have come and gone, OhmyNews has been remarkably successful and has become one of the most powerful news sites in its country. This case study explores the concept of journalistic professionalism among OhmyNews citizen journalists and assesses whether perceptions of their journalistic work align with Singer's dimensions of professionalism (i.e., cognitive, normative and evaluative dimensions). We then compare these perceptions to those of professional journalists within the organization and integrate them into journalistic role conceptions. Findings show that both groups work through collaboration, checks and balances, and a negotiation of autonomy. Both benefit from the partnership and share similarities, rather than differences, in their effort to remain sustainable in contemporary media culture.

Abstract

Laws for public library service were well established in Czechoslovakia before its split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia in 1993. The transfer of authority over public libraries from the central government to the local regions and municipalities after 1989 caused much confusion, especially since many library buildings were reclaimed by the owners from whom they had been confiscated by the Communists. The number of libraries in the country has declined since 1989. The shift of publishers to free market conditions meant not only that much “entertainment” literature was published, but also that the price of books was driven up. Library services have changed to meet the new social conditions: there are improved services for business and for the handicapped.
