A comparative study on first-time and experienced project-based learning students in an engineering design module

This study aims to compare and evaluate the learning ability and performance differences between two groups of students undergoing project-based learning (PjBL), with one group having prior PjBL experience, while the other group is being freshly exposed to PjBL. More specifically, it examines if there are significant differences in knowledge score, problem-solving ability, and eventual project-deliverable outcomes between the two sets of students. Performances were compared via qualitative and quantitative analyses. Key findings have indicated a significant increase in fundamental formative knowledge; enhanced problem-solving abilities; and production of better performing artefacts with regard to the set of design skills between experienced and first-time PjBL groups. This study also highlighted that experienced PjBL students have less conflicts within their groups, and are more receptive to PjBL compared to first-time PjBL students. Results from this study provide a starting point for educators to seek new learning/facilitating strategies that are relevant based on the experience and learning styles of students.

由于高职院校通信专业目录的调整,新专业的课程体系构建迫在眉睫,文章从课程体系的构建原则为基础,详细阐述了如何构建通信工程设计与监理这个新专业的课程,讲述了每门课程的如何和实践相联系,学生通过该课程体系学习,能够扎实的掌握通信工程的设计、监理、施工、项目管理方面的理论知识及实践能力。     

A qualitative examination of critical feedback processes in project-based youth programs

When an adolescent receives critical feedback from adults on what they should change, they may feel discouraged; however, such feedback can be key to learning. This study explored how adolescents attending project-based youth programs experienced critical feedback from adult leaders and the strategies these leaders employed when providing feedback. Qualitative analyses of interviews with 49 youth and 24 leaders indicated that youth participants found critical feedback to be useful because leaders intentionally provided straightforward, clear, and balanced feedback in a manner that was empathetic and involved dialogue that privileged participants’ ownership of their work. Using extant literature, we discuss why the features identified may be especially important during the period of adolescence.     

Design and implementation of a project-based active/cooperative engineering design course for freshmen

A project-based active/cooperative design course is planned, implemented, assessed and evaluated to achieve several desired engineering outcomes. The course allows freshman-level students to gain professional hands-on engineering design experience through an opportunity to practise teamwork, quality principles, communication skills, life-long learning, realistic constraints and awareness of current domestic and global challenges. Throughout successive design reports and in-class assignments, the students are required by the end of the semester to communicate, clearly and concisely, the details of their design both orally and in writing through a functional artefact/prototype, a design notebook, an A0 project poster and a final oral presentation. In addition to these direct assessment tools, several indirect measures are used to ensure triangulation. Assignments are based on customer expectations using a detailed checklist. This paper shows the direct and indirect assessment tools that indicated a high level of achievement of course learning outcomes and a high level of student satisfaction.

SolidWorks二维工程图在机械零件课程设计中的应用

针对AutoCAD在机械零件课程设计中不能进行参数修改的缺点,本文基于SolidWorks二维工程图介绍了在课程设计中装配工程图的绘制过程、参数的修改和确定,以确保设计过程中对工程图进行参数修改,文中还以二级齿轮减速器为例,探索一种操作简便,可进行参数化修改的绘制工程图的方法。     

项目设计教学法在单片机类课程中的教学实践

针对高校电子信息类专业单片机课程教学中普遍存在学生动手能力不强的问题进行分析,提出以基础实验项目和综合实验项目改革为切入点,重点介绍项目的选择过程和实施方法,确立了以项目设计教学法为核心的教学体系。该教学体系着重强调学生为主,教师为辅的培养模式,实现学生个性化培养的目标。实践表明,项目设计教学法能将单片机类课程理论与实践教学有机结合起来,提高教学质量和效率,为进一步提高学生的工程素质和创新能力打下坚实基础。     

机械设计教学中对计算机辅助设计的应用

机械设计是设计教学中的一个重要组成部分,作为一名机械设计的教师,一方面要了解传统的机械设计与现代设计的区别,另一方面要懂得应用现代的计算机技术对机械设计进行辅助教学,将计算机辅助设计充分运用到机械设计中去。本文通过简单介绍几方面计算机辅助设计在机械设计中的应用,借以说明机械设计教学中应用计算机辅助设计的重要性。

将虚拟样机技术引入机械设计综合实践课程设计中,以插床机械系统为例,利用ADAMS软件建立导杆机构的参数化模型,并对模型进行运动、动力学仿真及优化设计;用ADAMS软件进行课程设计精确、快捷、方便、直观,课程设计达到了满意的效果。     

A longitudinal evaluation of a project-based learning initiative in an engineering undergraduate programme

Project-based learning (PBL) is a well-known student-centred methodology for engineering design education. The methodology claims to offer a number of educational benefits. This paper evaluates the student perceptions of the initial and second offering of a first-year design unit at Griffith University in Australia. It builds on an earlier evaluation conducted after the initial offering of the unit. It considers the implementation of the recommended changes. Evaluations of the two offerings reveal that students (in both the initial and second offering) generally enjoyed the experience, but that the second offering was found to be a significantly more enjoyable learning experience. Students in the second offering also reported a significantly better understanding of what they needed to do for the design projects and where to find the requisite information. The oral presentation aspect of the initial and second offerings received the lowest satisfaction rating. The inclusion (and delivery) of the computer-aided drawing component of the unit is seen as a positive aspect by some students, but many others comment on it negatively. The best aspects of the PBL unit and those aspects needing further improvement were similar to the findings of other investigations documented in the literature.

Teaching design in the first years of a traditional mechanical engineering degree: methods,issues and future perspectives

Engineering design is known as an answer to an ill-defined problem. As any answer to an ill-defined problem, it can never be completely right or absolutely wrong. The methods that universities use to teach engineering design, as a consequence of this, suffer from the same fate. However, the accumulated experience with the ‘chalk and talk’ teaching tradition has led to a reality in which the employers of fresh graduates are not happy with the engineers they are getting. Part of their complaints are related with the inability of recently graduate engineers to work in problems where the boundaries are not well defined, are interdisciplinary, require the use of effective communication and integrate non-technical issues. These skills are mostly absent from traditional engineering curricula. This paper demonstrates the implementation of engineering design perspectives enhancing some of the aforementioned skills in a traditional mechanical engineering curriculum. It emphasises in particular a design project that is tackled in a sequence of conventional courses with a focus that depends on the course objectives and disciplinary domain. This transdisciplinary design project conveys the idea (and effectively implements it concurrently) that design is multidisciplinary.

本科毕业设计质量是衡量一所本科院校教学水平的重要标志。为提高本校毕业设计质量,立足于学校实际,指出了目前毕业设计过程中存在的问题,并进行了深入分析。在此基础上从选题、开题、过程监控、答辩等环节提出了具有一定操作可行性的对策,为后续毕业设计指导提供了一定的理论基础。     

Renovation of a mechanical engineering senior design class to an industry-tied and team-oriented course

In this work, an industry-based and team-oriented education model was established based on a traditional mechanical engineering (ME) senior design class in order to better prepare future engineers and leaders so as to meet the increasing demand for high-quality engineering graduates. In the renovated curriculum, industry-sponsored projects became the most important course component and critical assessment tool, from which problem-solving skills as well as employability skills of the ME students can be fully developed. Hands-on experiences in finite element analysis (FEA) modelling and simulation were also added into the renovated curriculum to promote the application of FEA on engineering design and assessment. Evaluation of the renovated course was conducted using two instruments and the results have shown that the course made the ME senior students more prepared for their future career and a win–win model was created between the industry partner and the ME programme through it. Impact of the renovated syllabus on Accreditation Board for Engineering Technology goals was discussed. Based on the current progress, a more substantial change is being planned to further improve the effectiveness and practicability of this design course. The renovated course was started to offer to the ME senior students at Mississippi State University.

Theo Jansen project in engineering design course and a design example

Objectives of a project-oriented mechanical engineering course, Engineering Design, were achieved through a design project, where students designed, built and demonstrated an extreme version of a basic Theo Jansen device. Through this project, junior students in the University of Louisiana fully developed the capability of applying mathematic and kinematic knowledge in the analysis and design of mechanisms. Students also developed oral and written communication skills, which would be used in design environments, through the presentation of results in both oral and written forms. An assessment of the design project indicated that effective teaching and learning spread through the semester, with the junior students acting as project managers and experiencing design practices. An example of a student-designed Theo Jansen device is presented in this paper to show the study results achieved by the students.
