Today it would be hard to imagine the publishing world without literary agents. But agents are relative newcomers. The first
arrived on the British literary scene some time in the late 1870s; A. P. Watt is generally regarded as the first true agent.
It was Watt who defined the role and function of the agent and established a standard of conduct by which his contemporaries
and successors were measured. Watt’s activities had great impact on the business of publishing and on the types of literature
writers produced. In fact, the agent was one of the main factors in the radical transformation of the publishing world that
occurred at the end of the nineteenth century. This article looks at Watt’s legacy: it focuses on both the publishing world
and the institution of the literary agency. It suggests that Watt was a dominant force in both and that, without him, literary
agency might not have prospered so well or so quickly.
She studied at Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar and received her D.Phil. in 1988. She is working on a book about the British literary
agent. 相似文献

A convenience sample of 348 users of Web sites for 10 NPR affiliate stations reported coming to the sites to find information about programs, read station and community news, and listen to live broadcasts. Information was the primary reason cited for visiting the sites; however, information seeking was negatively related to listening online. This finding suggests two distinct site users: those who come to listen and be entertained, and those who come to read news and be informed. 相似文献

Using a home market economic model, this article explains the changing competitive balance between the U.S. and Japanese film industries. I test the hypothesis that the domestic movies' market share in Japan has decreased because consumer movie spending has increased more rapidly in the United States than in Japan. The results of using information from a database (1955-2000) of media industry development in the United States and Japan generally support the economic hypothesis. 相似文献

Coordinated and organized by a disabilities librarian, the University of Michigan's Council for Disability Concerns provides annual outreach programs with biomedical themes through a series of educational events known as Investing in Ability. Every effort is made to reach the campus and the surrounding community to promote the council's goals of increased accessibility for all individuals with physical or developmental challenges, to de-stigmatize such conditions, and to educate the audience about disability-related topics. In 2014, Investing in Ability focused on the pressing and pervasive topic of addiction. Because audience attendance and interest were the highest that they have ever been for previous Investing in Ability events, the project will serve as a model in the future, possibly as one for other committees to emulate. 相似文献
