Black youth, identity, and ethics

This article examines stage models of racial identity that researchers and educators use to explain the subjective processes that influence how black youth navigate school. Despite the explicit challenge that most models of racial identity have posed to racist discourses in the research literature, the underlying ethics of their developmental trajectories is constrained by a politics of respectability that subverts a larger project of affirming black humanity. I use interview data to propose an alternative model for how black adolescent identity is formed. I conclude with a discussion of the importance of rethinking black adolescence in the context of changes in communication technologies associated with postindustrialism and globalization.     

SPME-GC-MS联用分析川红、滇红和祁红香气成分

采用固相微萃取(SPME)结合气相色谱-质谱(GC-MS)联用法对川红、滇红和祁红香气成分进行分析.结果表明:共检测到150种香气化合物,其中川红和滇红均为79种,祁红为89种,共有芳樟醇及其氧化物、香叶醇、水杨酸甲酯、苯乙醇、橙花叔醇、苯乙醛等33种成分是三个红茶中的共有成分.在主体香气成分方面,川红中检出香叶醇、芳樟醇、苯乙醇、芳樟醇氧化物Ⅱ、水杨酸甲酯、δ-杜松萜烯等18种,滇红中检出芳樟醇、水杨酸甲酯、香叶醇、芳樟醇氧化物Ⅱ、芳樟醇氧化物Ⅳ、苯乙醇等16种,祁红中检出香叶醇、芳樟醇、芳樟醇氧化物Ⅱ、苯乙醇、水杨酸甲酯等26种.川红和祁红表现出花果香可能与香叶醇、芳樟醇、水杨酸甲酯等主体香气成分含量较高有关.川红、滇红和祁红的萜烯指数分别为0.47、0.72和0.40,表明川红和祁红香气高锐,属于高香型红茶,这与感官审评结果一致.     

Black hair culture,politics and change

Since the period of black enslavement in the Americas, Diaspora people have used their bodies as a canvas on which to articulate their presence as subjects. This propensity to use the body as a key medium of creative and political expression emerged from an amalgam of African retentions and new, grounded syncretisms in the West. It was further influenced by their denial of access to the academies and cultural institutions such as music halls, galleries, theatres, museums and even clubs. But more than an embodied locus of creativity, the black body has been a site of political struggle since the antebellum period. Whether generated by an oppressor who sought to condition the black subject for labour by inflicting pain on his/her body or driven by the conflicts within some black subjects for physiognomic valuation, the body of the diasporic settler has been and remains a key site of political contestation. This paper will explore these two themes through the medium of black hair culture. In the process, it will look at the centrality of hair to diasporic aesthetics and hair as a symbol of black resistance to oppression. In doing so, it offers students and educationalists with an interest in issues‐based enquiry in art and design education a pathway to project development with a focus on hair culture that could be developed in a variety of media, while opening up avenues for dialogue that should enhance understanding.     

Young,Depressed, and Black: A Comparative Exploration of Depressive Symptomatology Among Black and White Collegiate Women

This comparative study explored the rates of depression and psychosocial correlates for 369 collegiate White and Black females. Women between the ages of 18 and 25 were recruited to participate in this anonymous online survey. Black females reported significantly greater amounts of depressive symptomatology (M = 24.61) in comparison to the White females (M = 15.68), (F (1,377) = 61.434, p < .001). A series of Chi-square analyses indicated that Black women (52.3%) were also significantly more likely to meet criteria for major depression than White women (21.7%). These findings highlight the racial disparities in psychosocial health among college students.

African American College Students,the Black Church,and Counseling

African American undergraduate students face numerous challenges during college; however, they are less likely to seek help from college counseling services. Often, African Americans seek support from spiritual resources. In the current phenomenological study, participants shared in a focus group interview. Overall, participants seemed to value the Black Church as an integral part of their lives and as an influence on their perceptions of counseling and proclivity to seek counseling services.

Phenomenological understanding of Black counselor education students at Predominately White Institutions,Historically Black Colleges and Universities,and Hispanic Serving Institutions

The experiences of Black counseling students at Predominantly White Institutions are well documented. Using a transcendental phenomenological environmental research design, we explored how 12 Black counselor education graduates experienced their respective institutions across three types of academic institutions—Predominantly White Institutions, Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutions. Three salient themes emerged—(1) exposure, (2) real-life exposure, and (3) cultural oasis. The researchers also discussed implications for counselor education programs and future research.
