This paper presents an index that measures reviewer contribution to editorial processes of scholarly journals. Following a metaphor of ranking algorithms in sports tournaments, we created an index that considers reviewers on different context-specific dimensions, i.e., report delivery time, the length of the report and the alignment of recommendations to editorial decisions. To test the index, we used a dataset of peer review in a multi-disciplinary journal, including 544 reviewers on 606 submissions in six years. Although limited by sample size, the test showed that the index identifies outstanding contributors and weak performing reviewers efficiently. Our index is flexible, contemplates extensions and could be incorporated into available scholarly journal management tools. It can assist editors in rewarding high performing reviewers and managing editorial turnover.  相似文献

Rhetoric about the ideal pricing model for scholarly content is often both strident and ill‐informed. Recognition of the nature of the business model is sometimes overlooked in favour of slogans or blanket accusations. This paper reviews qualitatively some of the core issues surrounding the creation of a sustainable pricing model that will enable authors, readers, and publishers to coexist. No particular examples are recommended or rejected; what is important is that interested parties explore thoroughly the available options and make decisions based on available facts, instead of emotion or trends.  相似文献

通过对我国38所高校自然科学版学报所载论文14717篇参考文献的调查与分析,得出如下结论:科技期刊学术质量评估体系中参考文献评估指标由近期文献引文率、核心期刊与经典专著引文率、外文文献引文率、中文文献引文率、篇均引文、无引文率等项内容所构建。另外,引文著录规范化率是否纳入评估指标体系之中,有待商讨。我们认为,为了全面提高科技期刊的学术质量,引文著录规范化问题理应引起科技期刊编辑的重视。如将此纳入评估体系中,首先必须确定出全国统一的科技期刊参考文献标准著录格式(目前标准不一致)。不然,评估既不合理,也缺乏可比性。  相似文献

Metrics on open access (OA) availability of content published in scholarly journals (i.e. content licences, copyright ownership, and publisher‐stipulated self‐archiving permissions) are still scarce. This study implements the four core variables of the recently published Open Access Spectrum (OAS) (reader rights, reuse rights, copyright, and author posting rights) to measure the level of openness in all 1,728 Spanish scholarly journals listed in the Spanish national DULCINEA database at the end of 2015. Data exported from the database and used as variables for the analysis were: journal research area, type of publisher, type of access, self‐archiving and reuse policy, and type of Creative Commons (CC) licence used. Out of the total number of journals (1,728), 1,285 (74.5%) published their articles OA immediately after initial publication and thus received the maximum OAS score for reader rights; 37.5% of all journals used CC licences, and 79.5% allowed self‐archiving in some form. In 72% of journals, authors retained or publishers granted broad rights, which included author reuse and authorization rights (for others to reuse), whilst 13.5% did not specify any terms for copyright transfer. Similar studies could be carried out on other countries as this would enable comparisons of the general adoption and form of openness in different parts of the world.  相似文献

A qualitative study of the impact of electronic journals on the information behavior of academic researchers at Catalan universities shows that academic researchers now read more, and more widely. However, their reading is becoming more superficial; they are compelled to improve their discrimination skills in order to decide what to read in more depth. The electronic accessibility of journals means that researchers now make fewer library visits. Web browsing and table of contents (TOC) e-mail alerts are replacing physical browsing, and searching is a very popular option for keeping up to date with developments. Internet search engines, especially Google and Google Scholar, are becoming important sources of information for researchers. 通过对数字化出版特点及网络传播规律的分析,认为:无论是高校学报还是专业期刊,在网络世界里科技期刊的汇编权被肢解,学术信息以微内容的形式存在和传播,平等地供使用者搜索;因此,长期困扰高校学报发展的综合性劣势在淡化,为高校学报的发展提供了机遇。利用中国学术期刊网络出版总库检索,获取部分高校学报和专业期刊2010年的发文量,以及在相同发表时间内的网络下载次数,并计算出每种期刊篇均下载次数。结果表明,与专业期刊相比,高校学报网络传播效果略占优势,影响传播的主要因素是科技期刊的内容和品牌效应而不是综合性或专业性。  相似文献

Many librarians support faculty with the publishing process, which includes journal selection and evaluating the impact of their scholarly output. While large universities have the resources for entire departments devoted to bibliometrics, the authors of this article give strategies for faculty publishing support at a smaller liberal arts university. The authors created a LibGuide with publishing resources and presented the initiative to several academic divisions. Faculty were surveyed, and the results indicated that the majority of respondents were interested in assessing journal quality and viewed the library as a resource for help with the publishing process.  相似文献
