The Use of Arabized Software Packages in Jordan University Libraries

This study reviews the higher education movement, and the development of Universities in Jordan. Academic libraries use of Arabized software packages (MINISIS and CDS/ISIS), rationale for selection, applications, services, problems, solutions, and future plans are surveyed. Types of hardware, staff, and material entries are discussed. The study samples included 20 libraries. All of 17 (85%) respondent libraries are computerized. Six (35·3%) use MINISIS, nine (52·9%) use CDS/ISIS, and two (11·8%) use customized packages. Systems are mostly employed in technical processing, reference services, bibliographies, and acquisitions. Adaptability to Arab libraries functions, handling of bi-lingual documents, and networking ability are the prime priority, inter alia , reasons for packages selection. Insufficient funds and equipment, and unskilled staff are the major hindrances which obstruct the full use of packages. This study stresses the need to develop packages conducive to meet particular Arab libraries demands, plans for manpower academic training, and the necessity for libraries linkage to networks.

Abstract

Library automation assumed a great deal of importance in libraries in the mid 1960’s. Since then it has become a household word in librarianship. Library automation in university libraries in Ghana is a relatively new concept. Even though computers have been installed in the three university libraries in Ghana, computerization has not had much impact on the services provided by these libraries. This paper reviews the computerization projects in the university libraries in Ghana, with a particular reference to the Balme Library of the University of Ghana. Reasons for automation, areas of application and problems associated with automation are discussed. Also highlighted are barriers militating against successful university library automation, like financial problems, attitudinal problems, lack of co-operation among university libraries, hardware and software problems and personnel problems. Recommendations are made for the improvement of automation at the university libraries in Ghana. These include evaluation of existing systems, properly planned automation project, financial support and co-operation among the university libraries.

The Use of Microforms in Libraries

The use of microforms in libraries has grown over the past ten years, and microform will continue to be an appropriate medium for preserving certain types of materials. The future use of microforms is clouded by the potential storage capabilities of the new disc technologies. Yet noteworthy advances have been made in the bibliographic control of microforms and in the quality of readers and printers available. A review of the recent literature traces the changes in microform use and technology and the increased emphasis on educating users to the benefits of microforms.     

关于我国大学图书馆的电子资源利用教育

对我国130所大学图书馆的网络调研结果表明,我国大学图书馆电子资源利用教育目前存在的主要问题有:电子资源利用教育不平衡现象明显,缺乏统一管理,教学内容的针对性比较模糊,远距离用户的教育亟待解决。要加强对电子资源利用教育的统一管理,拟定完善的教育计划,提高师资队伍素质,加强合作,共享电子资源利用教育的资源与经验。参考文献5。

The Use of PsycBOOKS in Academic Libraries

A survey concerning usage of PsycBOOKS was mailed to the database coordinators at 280 academic libraries in the United States in the winter of 1991. A total of 160 usable returns, representing a 57% return rate, were received. Results indicate that a majority of the responding libraries did not own this important reference tool, and were not planning to acquire it, although patrons from libraries that did own it responded positively to its format and ease of use. Some comments received indicated a lack of awareness about the existence of PsycBOOKS, while others indicated an interest in waiting for its appearance in CD-ROM format before purchasing.
