Languages convey cultural information while they are used as tools to communicate. With the development of human society and the frequencies of intercultural communication, cultural differences may impact on people’s normal communications.Cultural differences between English and Chinese appear in many aspects of languages.Animal words are influenced by such cultural factors as geographical conditions, historical developments, traditional customs, mythology and fables, etc. So they are endowed with abundant cultural connotations.A similar animal word may have different connotative meanings in English and Chinese respectively, but sometimes different animal words have the same connotations.Whether they are different or not will reflect cultural differences between Chinese and English. Thus, through illustration, classification and comparison of English and Chinese animal words, the thesis aims to explore the cultural differences between English and Chinese. What’s more, the thesis aims to help English learns have a better understanding of English culture and develop the abilities of English language study.  相似文献

This paper examines theoretical frameworks with which to study newly-immigrated mothers from China and calls for the need to make Chinese mothers become knowers and agents of knowledge. Although there are black and Chicana feminist epistemologies, currently there is no comparable discourse in the study of Chinese feminist epistemology, particularly on newly-immigrated Chinese mothers in the USA. By examining Chinese mothers' experiences immigrating to the United States and educating their children in the transnational context, the paper agrees that both endarkened feminist epistemology and transnational feminism cannot fully interpret and address newly-immigrated Chinese mothers' experiences. Drawing the research data directly from Chinese mothers, the paper describes different challenges Chinese mothers faced in immigrating and their children's education due to various factors, such as language, historical and cultural roots, to highlight Chinese mothers' various experiences in immigration and their children's education in the transnational context.  相似文献

By contrasting the model compositions by advanced Chinese EFL learners and American university students in the cor pus approach, the present study analyzes the use of productive vocabulary by Chinese EFL learners both quantitatively and qualita tively. It is found that except the first 1000 most frequently used words, there is no statistically significant difference between the frequency distribution of the productive vocabulary used by both types of English learners. But in terms of the usages of the Eng lish words, the Chinese EFL learners exhibit inadequacy in understanding and employing them, especially with regard to semantic prosody and collocation. These findings are significant for the teaching of vocabulary in China.  相似文献

The main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that's only superficial. Besides, in decent restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork, if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the host thinks you're in the country for …  相似文献

For many years it was common in the United States to associate Chinese Americans with restaurantsand laundres1.People did not realize that the Chinese had been driven into these occupations by theprejudice2 and discrimination that faced them in this country. Honglou Meng is an encyclopedia of Chinese language in which includes many different Chinese linguistic features, e.g. idioms, common sayings, poems etc. There are 109 Chinese common sayings in the first 80 chapters of the novel. Most Chinese common sayings contain figurative meanings and the images involved are usually vivid and culture-specific; therefore it is very difficult to translate them. It is found that David Hawkes is more creative and use more free translation while the Yangs use more literal translation. This supports Feng Qinghua’s suggestion that the Yangs prefer to use literal translation while David Hawkes is inclined to use free translation.  相似文献

The publication of the ten-chapter work Ma Shi Wen Tong by Ma Jianzhong marks the establishment of Chinese grammatical rules. For ages,in a way comparable to what was done in western languages, the study of Chinese grammar tends more or less to imitate Indo-European grammar. This paper made an attempt to discuss the influence produced by Indo-European grammatical theories on Chinese grammar and pointed that Chinese grammatical study is bound to be carried out on the basis of language self characteristics.  相似文献
