Encouraging skills development is a key part of the UK Government’s strategy. This emphasis on skills has led to changes in Higher Education, where there is an increasing recognition of the need to enhance students’ employability. This paper reviews the data on the type of employer skill needs available in the existing literature with a particular emphasis on those skills required by engineering and manufacturing employers. Statistical data related to skill gaps in engineering and manufacturing in the UK and London/Thames Gateway are presented with the intention to determine whether and how these relate to the employability skills and competences listed by various organisations. The paper arrives at a number of conclusions. In summary, for the ‘engineering and manufacturing workforce skills development’ ethos to become widespread in London (and the UK in general), a lot more needs to be done to understand the needs of industry to be able to develop provision that supports Londoners (and the UK citizens in general) in gaining appropriate skills in engineering. This can only be achieved through cooperative, inclusive, transparent and centrally coordinated approaches to skills assessment, monitoring and development.  相似文献

The term ‘child prodigies’ is not a scientific one, but is commonly used to refer to exceptional children. Such children are frequently featured in the mass media in particular the daily press. Many of these cases are accessible in no other way. This paper first presents a summary of cases of ‘exceptional early achievers’ reported in two leading British ‘quality’ newspapers. The Times and The Sunday Times, over the decade 1988 to 1997. These and other reports raise numerous issues about giftedness and attitudes to it, which appear to be ambivalent or somewhat negative. This may have implications for public policy towards, and provision for, able children. While the daily press is not scientific literature, there seems to be a regrettable ignorance of psychological knowledge, which would probably not be paralleled in say medicine or engineering.  相似文献

This paper reports on the 65 courses which were described by faculty responding to a questionnaire sent out by the authors to all industrial engineering university programmes in the US. The purpose of the questionnaire was to obtain information regarding the organization and content of simulation courses in industrial engineering programmes. This paper includes a summary of the responses, including the number of courses using various programming languages and textbooks, the proportion of courses teaching various simulation topics, examples of typical open-ended project assignments and many other course characteristics. This article is a summary of the survey questionnaire about 'biochemical engineering' education in Japanese universities. The questionnaire was distributed to the academic professors whose research fields include, whole or partly, biochemical engineering, within the author's understanding. Almost all these professors are members of a section specializing in biochemical engineering research, a suborganization of the Society of Chemical Engineers, Japan. Some of these professors are also members of the Society for Bioscience and Bioengineering, Japanese Society for Food Science and Technology, etc. The surveyed fact data are from 35 questionnaires returned from 50 dispatched. This number is considered sufficient to realize the present status of biochemical engineering education in Japan.  相似文献

Findings are presented from a series of moderated interactive sessions held at international engineering education conferences between July 2007 and December 2008, where attendees discussed the current state and future trajectory of engineering education research. More specifically, this study examines how session attendees described: (1) the relationship between engineering education research and educational practice, policy considerations and industry; (2) important stakeholders, mechanisms/strategies and challenges for relating research to practice, policy and industry. Thematic analysis and open coding procedures were used to analyse the data collected at each session. In summary, frequent discussion and widespread consensus was observed about the need to relate engineering education research to the practice of engineering teaching. Discussions about relating research to policy and industry remain formative, but appear to be gaining traction. The paper concludes by proposing a cyclic model to better conceptualise how engineering education research can be strategically related to practice, profession and industry across diverse local and global contexts.  相似文献
