The inadequacy of ADHD: a philosophical contribution

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a widely spread diagnosis. The dominant paradigm of ADHD is biomedical where ADHD is defined as a brain disorder. At the same time, the legitimacy of the diagnosis is being questioned since it is unclear whether or not ADHD can be deemed a medical disorder in itself. The aim of this article is to critically assess the merits of understanding the diagnosis of ADHD as a medical condition defined as a brain disorder. This is being done using the seventeenth century philosopher Benedict Spinoza’s (1632–1677) notions of adequate and inadequate knowledge and his counterintuitive theory of mental health. Doing so it becomes clear that ADHD, however adequate it may seem, is founded on inadequate knowledge and that the legitimacy of the individual diagnosis should therefore be questioned on the grounds that on a long term scale it is passivizing and stigmatizing rather that liberating.

This study sought to identify and categorize student perceptions of sexism. Respondents were asked to describe critical incidents involving sexism and to supply words and phrases, nonverbal behaviors, and media representations which they interpreted as sexist. Responses were content analyzed, and general hypotheses about the ways sex of respondent and sex of target affected the number and type of responses were tested.

The educational inadequacy of conceptions of self in educational psychology

Disciplinary and professional psychology have exercised considerable influence over the ways in which Western individuals and societies understand what it is to be a person. During the last half of the 20^th century, educational psychologists advanced scientific and humanistic conceptions of the self that removed personhood from the historical, socio-cultural traditions and related moral and political practices within which the self develops. In consequence, the theoretical and practical models of self-enhancement and self-management offered by educational psychologists are inadequate with respect to the education of persons who, if they are to function as effective citizens, must participate in complex, contested socio-cultural, moral, and political contexts with others.

The purpose of this study was to determine if nonrespondendents to speech communication survey research differ demographically from respondents. As a follow‐up investigation of a questionnaire study, 1,604 subjects were compared across six dimensions to establish if differences existed between respondent and nonrespondent populations.     

Evolution of the anatomical theatre in Padova

The anatomical theatre played a pivotal role in the evolution of medical education, allowing students to directly observe and participate in the process of dissection. Due to the increase of training programs in clinical anatomy, the Institute of Human Anatomy at the University of Padova has renovated its dissecting room. The main guidelines in planning a new anatomical theatre included: (1), the placement of the teacher and students on the same level in a horizontal anatomical theatre where it is possible to see (theatre) and to perform (dissecting room); (2), in the past, dissection activities were concentrated at the center of the theatre, while in the new anatomical theatre, such activities have been moved to the periphery through projection on surrounding screens—thus, students occupy the center of the theatre between the demonstration table, where the dissection can be seen in real time, and the wall screens, where particular aspects are magnified; (3), three groups of tables are placed with one in front with two lateral flanking tables in regards to the demonstration table, in a semicircular arrangement, and not attached to the floor, which makes the room multifunctional for surgical education, medical students and physician's continued professional development courses; (4), a learning station to introduce the students to the subject of the laboratory; (5), cooperation between anatomists and architects in order to combine the practical needs of a dissection laboratory with new technologies; (6), involvement of the students, representing the clients' needs; and (7), creation of a dissecting room of wide measurements with large windows, since a well‐illuminated space could reduce the potentially negative psychological impact of the dissection laboratory on student morale. Organization and management of an institutional theatre

Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of heteroglossia is central to his concept of dialogism and the way discourse achieves meaning. Bakhtin ‘s catalog of kinds of heteroglossia in the novel offers a method for describing the narrative discourse in Flannery O'Connor's Wise Blood, a novel that has evoked disagreement about its quality and its effects. Bakhtin's concept has greater explanatory power than other theories used to explore the rhetorical effects of the novel and the values embodied in its language. In turn, the application of Bakhtin's theory suggests that some kinds of heteroglossia play a larger role in establishing ideology than even Bakhtin claimed.     

中国大陆小剧场戏剧热潮的终结

进入21世纪后中国大陆出现了一定规模的商业性小剧场话剧,它们打着小剧场戏剧的旗号吸引了大批的城市青年观众尤其是白领阶层。诸如此类的小剧场戏剧都有比较成功的商业操作,但是从探索一种新的小剧场美学或者说解救戏剧危机的角度而言它们无所作为。本文将立足于21世纪初小剧场戏剧阵营里不再具有实验性的主导性商业化小剧场戏剧来说明中国大陆的小剧场戏剧作为一种大规模的现象已经终结。     

Invisible theatre,ethics, and the adult educator

This article probes the ethics of one of the more controversial as well as exciting forms of adult education—the mode of theatre of the oppressed called ‘invisible theatre’. Looking at claims made by practitioners—Augusto Boal’s especially—and drawing on concrete theatre pieces, the author asks: What are invisible theatre’s claims to ethicality? How valid are the claims? Are the claims and practices compatible with adult education principles? And how might invisible theatre be conducted more ethically? The article demonstrates that despite invisible theatre’s highly ethical mandate, Boal’s defences of invisible theatre are wanting, the levels of deception and danger are problematic, and the standard practices and claims are incompatible with certain adult education principles and commitments, including the Freirian commitment to non‐manipulation. At the same time, it is shown, there is potential for invisible theatre praxis which is both effective and ethical, albeit changes are called for. Suggestions for improved practice include: invisible theatre troupes committing themselves to becoming ethically reflective practitioners, making minimal deception the new norm, reining in the level of conflict, exploring the ‘opaque’, and no longer taking as a given that invisible theatre should never be ‘outed’.
