IMPROVING THE IDENTIFICATION OF ANXIOUS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CHILDREN THROUGH THE USE OF AN ADJUSTED ANXIETY SCALE

Anxiety scores (Test Anxiety Scale for Children) from 165 sixth graders were adjusted for defensiveness (Lie Scale for Children) by an equally weighted summation of the two scores. Construct validity of the adjusted anxiety score was markedly superior to that of the uncorrected score, as indicated by an increase in correlation with achievement on a programmed instruction unit of(in one case) -.33 to -.52.

THE USE OF SEPARATE ANSWER SHEETS BY PRIMARY AGE CHILDREN1

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects on test scores of employing a separate answer sheet using the California Test of Mental Maturity with 117 pupils in the primary grades of one through three. The CTMM was administered twice to all students; once employing the usual answer marking format contained in the test booklet and once employing a separate answer sheet. A counterbalanced design was used to control for order effects. The mean raw differences between marking format conditions decreased from 23.67 to 10.79 to 3.32 for students in grades one through three respectively, indicating that the need for the test booklet marking format decreases sharply as the grade level of the Ss increases.

THE USE OF THE STORY IN THE PROMOTION OF WORSHIP

This article consists of remarks made during a panel at the 2017 annual meeting of the Religious Education Association in St. Louis, MO. From his vantage point as a former law enforcement agent, the author explores issues of ethical dilemmas present in policing; the current situation of militarized police forces; community policing and its origins; and the shooting of a Black young adult, Michael Brown, by a White police officer in Ferguson, MO. Religious educators, clergy, and ethicists can take a hands-on role to encourage justice in policing by discouraging an us/them mentality and advocating for community policing.

RESEARCH INTO THE CONCEPT OF RESILIENCE AS A BASIS FOR THE CURRICULUM FOR CHILDREN WITH EBD

This paper reviews a corpus of research on educational resilience as developed by researchers in the USA. It is noted that at the present time the longstanding debate as to the relative importance of therapeutic and curricular aims in the education of children with EBD has been thrown into sharp relief by the Ofsted inspection regime that concentrates on curricular imperatives. It is argued that the concept of educational resilience provides a basis for a pedagogy that will attend to thereapeutic needs within any given curricular framework.

Research which supports the proposed focus on aspects of the educational process known to promote resilience at the individual and at the school level is then reviewed to provide ample examples of interventions that could be adopted in a curriculum aimed at promoting resilience.     

教育中的民主概念:一种批判性考察

促进教育的民主化被看做是现代教育变革的一项重要任务。教育民主化包涵着非常丰富的内容,既包括教育机会的扩大和均等,也包括教育组织、活动和关系本身的民主化。在教育民主化理念的支配下,民主成为适用于并支配学校事务的一项基本价值原则。然而,人们仔细审视民主概念在教育场域中的应用情况,也发现存在不少值得严肃讨论的具体问题。这些具体问题指向一个更为基本的问题:学校是一个可以被民主化的场所吗?本文提出,由于学校组织的教育性特征,诞生于政治领域中的民主原则并不能完全无条件地适用于教育场域;在教育事务的处理上,民主原则的应用应该考虑与教育性原则以及传统、权威、道德、自主性等诸多影响因素相协调,从而建构更为良好的教育关系或教育秩序,防止现代社会以一种单一的民主逻辑来改造学校,防止现代教育陷入民主的迷思。这可以看做是对我国教育学界一直以来所倡导的教育民主化理论的一个补充或修正。
