Cui Junmiao： Plucking Melodies of Youth

Cui was enrolled in Tianjin Theatre Academy in 1980 to study Zhongruan and Liuqin under the mentorship of master Zou Ke, She was also trained in several other string and percussion instruments such as Jinghu （Beijing Opera two-string violin）, Yueqin （moon guitar） and Sanxian （long-necked three-string lute）. She was admiMed by Central Conservatory of Music in 1989 and trained by a number of masters including Prof. Kuang Yuzhong, Zhang Dasen, Liu Xing and Zhang Xinhua. As the conservatory＇s first graduate in Liuqin, Cui was employed by China Radio Ethnic Music Ensemble in 1993.     

My Second Hometown Langde Village

I was born in Gouliang Village, Fenghuang County, Hunan Province, which is dubbed as the ＂First Miao People Village of Western Hunan＂. But I have been more fascinated by my second hometown, Langde Village in Leishan County, Guizhou Province, which is known as the hometown of folk arts of China and one of the 100 most unique museums of China. The village was proclaimed as a key heritage site under state-level protection in 2001, included in the candidate list for World Cultural Heritage nomination in 2006, awarded the title of ＂China Landscape Village＂ in 2007 and hosted Olympic torch relay in 2008. Over the past 25 years, I visited this beautiful village for more than 100 times.

35 years have passed since the policy of reform and opening up was launched in China. “Under the Hawthorn Tree” Features Yang Caiqi

In August 2007, a romance novel entitled The Love of the Hawthorn Tree swept the country, and became a super-selling book with sales volume of four million, which was hailed as “the purest romance novel in history” by readers. Adapted into a movie of the same name in 2010, The Love of the Hawthorn Tree was directed by famous director Zhang Yimou. It set a new box office record for domestic romance movies in one ,fell swoop, which was the most sensational cultural event in 2010. AN EMBASSY TO CHINA

From 1419 to 1422, a large diplomatic mission consisting of 510 persons and dispatched by Timurid King Shahruh Bahadur paid a visit to the Ming Empire. The delegation member and painter recorded in his diary traditions and customs he saw along his journey and politics, economy, traditions and people of the Ming Dynasty. These notes were later compiled as “An Embassy to China”, which is now referred to as an important historical record for the study of cultural exchange between Central Asia and China of the time. The author, based on this literary work, reviewed that part of history on friendly exchange between China and lran.     

URBAN SCULPTURE WORKS OF FAN WEN

Fan Wen, born in Linfen, Shanxi Provicc and graduated from the Sculpting Department of Sichuan Institute of Fine Arts, is currently member of China Sculpture Society and a professional artist working in the Institute of Sculpting Art of Sichuan Province. She holds such academic qualifications as the first-grade national level artist and the national registered artist for urban sculpture. Shc is also a resident artist in the art area of He Tang Yue Se （lotus pond in moonlight）.

Without true feelings, a painting is just a sentimental twaddle. Zhang Lucheng, a professional painter serving in Xinjiang Military Area in northwest China has lived in the vast prairie at the foot of the Tianshan Mountain since he graduated from fine arts academy.     

Guizhou： a Natural Museum on Ethnic Traditions

Dong people, an ethnic minority group dwelling in southeast China, are talented for singing and dancing.The area they dwell in is thus hailed as the ＂sea of songs＂ and ＂natural museum on ethnic culture＂. Dong people often sing songs in drum towers in their villages as a way of recreation. The songs they sing, called ＂Grand Songs of Dong People＂ are multi-part folk songs without accompaniment.     

Zhang Zhengyan： A Life Dedicated to Music

Zhang Zhengyan, a Chongqing native, graduated from China Theatric Art College and is specialized in pipa （Chinese lute） and jing erhu （two-string） as well as guzheng （plucked zither）. She began learning pipa at age 9 and was later admitted in the middle school attached to China Theatric Art College. In 1996, she passed the entrance examination with excellent performance and was enrolled in China Theatric Art College. Her mentors included such master musicians as Prof. Cao Baorong, Wu Chongyi, Li Guanghua, Lin Xueming, Gu Yujie and Zhao Zhiquan.

Facelift of Ningbo＇s Bund

“Bund” derives from an Anglo-Indian word for an embankment along a muddy waterfront. In the late 19^th century after Shanghai was forced to open to Western colonists, the Bund became the site of some of the earliest foreign settlements and now is known as one of the most recognizable architectural symbols of Shanghai. But the Bund is not a feature exclusive to Shanghai. Similar styles of architecture also appear in other coastal or river cities in China, such as Wuhan,Guangzhou, Chengdu and Fuzhou.     

The Glorious Era Showcased on Canvas

The huge portrait of Deng Xiaoping, respected as the ＂chief architect of China＇s reform and opening up＂, is a landmark standina in the downtown of Shenzhen, the first city embarking on the road to reform and opening up in the late 1970s. In the end of last year, a miniature replica of this famous portrait was installed, accompanied by the slogan ＂adhering to the Party＇s fundamental guideline for at least 100 years＂, in the courtyard of the National Art Museum of China.

Sheep and goats, major livestock in Guizhou Steppe of southwest China, are of both practical and social value for local dwellers. As sheep is pronounced similar as "auspicious" in Chinese, its image is widely applied to every aspect of local society, including religious rites, calendar calculation, arts creation and architecture.
