High skills are today seen as being of vital importance to economies, industries, companies and individuals. The engineering industry is no exception and the graduate engineer has a key position in this regard. In the research reported in this paper, the authors use in-depth interviews with industry experts to investigate the provision of undergraduate engineering education in the UK. The current and future skill needs of industry are examined. A typology of future engineering roles and their requisite attributes is proposed. Implications for undergraduate engineering are also discussed.  相似文献

Postgraduate students involved in delivering undergraduate teaching while working toward a research degree are known as graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). This study focused upon the problems and benefits arising from this dual role as researchers and teachers, as perceived by GTAs at the University of Cambridge. To this end, GTAs at Cambridge were invited to participate in an online survey (n?=?153). Teaching is seen to offer a wide range of benefits to GTAs, including benefits to the GTAs’ own research, transferable skills development, career development and teaching skills. Time pressures emerged as the principal problem associated with the role. The data are consistent with findings from previous studies, while also providing further detail about the nature of the benefits and problems. In particular, additional insights are offered relating to benefits and problems associated with different teaching activities, and disciplinary differences.  相似文献

This article describes the resumption and development of graduate education in China since the end of the Cultural Revolution, the death of Mao Tse-tung, and the rise of a new Chinese leadership headed by Deng Xiaoping in 1976–1977. Based on field research conducted in China in 1980 and 1981, statistical documentation provided by Chinese education officials at national and local levels, and other primary and secondary source material, this study explores admissions patterns and statistics, admissions requirements, examinations and the continuing controversy in graduate enrollment, the stress on enrollment in science and engineering specialties, the different types of institutions training graduate students, the graduate curriculum and academic dissertations, the new Chinese academic degree system and the methods for conferral of degrees, and teaching and research employment patterns. The study stresses the interrelationship of graduate programs and educational and political debate within China since the mid-1960s, and the important problems Chinese graduate programs and educational administrators face in continuing the development of graduate education.  相似文献

Biological engineering will be important for the future application of advances in biology to solve problems facing humankind. The philosophical foundation for broad undergraduate biological engineering programmes has previously been given, but biological engineering graduate programmes, where specialization normally occurs, have remained undefined. While specialization will continue in these graduate programmes, efforts must be made to relate research and teaching results to: (1) the analogical systems approach; and (2) the derivation of biological information to produce new general engineering techniques. A brief historical review of education beyond the baccalaureate with particular emphasis on graduate study in electrical engineering is followed by an examination of present trends. Consideration is given to such topics as admission requirements, programs of study, graduation requirements, and residence requirements as they affect students. Staff factors such as qualifications, load, compensation, research, and advancement are considered. Focusing on the context of graduate training in educational research in the United States today, this article is organized into two principal parts. The first overviews the state of research training in order to emphasize the preoccupation with, indeed dominance of, study of methodology. This has turned 'how to do research' into valuing method as technology for its own sake, and thus into technologization. The second part turns to three critiques of technology that together point to potential totalization in research: technologization that limits research processes and potential results. The writings of Martin Heidegger and Jacques Ellul provide a broad frame; the three specific critiques are found in contributions from Henry Adams, Aldous Huxley, and Donna Haraway. The conclusion calls for a questioning of the current form of graduate training and by implication its hold on current research practice.  相似文献

“十八大”报告提出全面提高党的建设的科学化水平.高校作为人才培养的基地、科研创新的高地,需要以改革创新的精神推进党的基层组织建设和党员队伍建设,使之成为推进党建科学化发展的先锋力量.目前,随着高校党员发展数量的逐年增加,党员质量、基层党组织建设还存在一些问题,特别是理工科学院研究生党建工作出现了例如培养时间短、思想政治教育不足、组织凝聚力不强的问题,这在一定程度上会影响高校中心工作和内涵建设.因此,应结合理工科研究生的特点,通过探索支部建在学科上,导师和支部书记加强互动等方式,来探讨基层党组织的内涵建设,进一步推动高校研究生党支部建设的科学化水平.  相似文献

依据层次分析法 ,对研究生科研能力结构要素的调查问卷进行统计分析 ,结果表明 :文、理、工三科研究生所需基本科研能力结构要素既有共性 ,又有个性。三科研究生所需综合基本科研能力结构要素前 5项依次为创新能力、逻辑推理能力、资料搜集与处理能力、问题解决能力及语言表达能力。由于学科特点等方面的差异 ,文、理、工三科研究生基本科研能力在具体排序方面呈现出细微差异。  相似文献
